I, too, am interested in responses to this thread. We just closed on a lake cottage that has the same type ceilings and are looking for flooring options.

They are installed over concrete so they're not cushy. I can't say that I notice any sound. I am very happy with them.

ETA: There is a vinyl plank click together install that is waterproof. I've seen it used in a bathroom on a Bath Crashers show.

In our last house we did a drop ceiling. I think we used 4X4 stained lumber for the frames and exterior fake Stucco, I think cut 8x4 ft sheets in half. It was a rustic look we wanted and 28 yrs later looked perfect.

Why can't you use an outside wood siding instead of the drop in? You can stain or paint before you put it up. A bit more expensive but sure looks good.

She wants to have access to plumbing, electric etc. I especially liked what I explained above because we had 4x4 ft panels to slide over for access.

We just had Shaw Casa/Antico vinyl plank flooring installed in our basement level. It turned out great and we think it looks nice. We purchased from Costco and it was sold to us and installed by a very good, local interiors company. I don't have experience with drop ceilings so I can't comment there.
