Oh no sink base too small for farmhouse sink

I am trying to do this small kitchen update long distance. This is our second home in Florida. I have a 30x18 shaw farmhouse sink. I ordered a 33 in base and have been worried it would be too small and the sink wouldn't look right. Well the cabinets arrived and the base is only 30!!! I signed off on it and didn't notice. My carpenter thinks he can cut down the sides of the sink cabinet and install the sink resting on those sides. There is no way they can support the 180 lbs . Also I am worried it will look stupid. There is 5" left on the left side of the run. I can order a bigger base but the sink will then not be centered under the window. My contractor is very worried about that. Any ideas?

Is there any way the carpenter can draw up the front of the sink on cardboard and tape it to the front of the cabinet so that you can see if it'll look stupid? Don't worry about support--I assume any decent carpenter will add bracing if needed.

Yes, in fact there is a 5"and they supplied only a 2"filler. The contractor talked to the cabinet place and they offered to replace the 15" wastebasket cabinet(to right of sink) with an 18" at no charge. I'll have him check and see if they'll do something about the sink base instead. The sink will be down a little to the right then

Although it's against the manufacturer's instructions, I'm not seeing why your cabinetmaker can't cut the cabinet and install the sink, especially if you snuck a panel in next to the dishwasher. The cut cabinet is certainly strong enough to support the sink.

Thank you Joe! My husband and I have been going round and round all night with this--maybe we can finally let it go.

Koehler makes two "shortened apron" front sinks... The Whitehaven and The Vault. They are the only two apron front sinks on the market that fit into standard sized cabinets, as far as I know. I haven't purchased one, but I almost did and they got great reviews from people updating older kitchens.

laurskowronski, what does "shortened apron" mean? My cabinets are going in next week, I bought a 36" Kohler Whitehaven double basin that is supposed to go into a 36" base, this thread has me worried I'll have problems? Sorry to hijack...

Most farmhouse sinks require a special cabinet with shortened doors like in the picture above. If you have the special sink base cabinet - no problem. For remodels that are keeping the cabinets like I did, Kohler makes two apron front sinks in a "short apron" style which can be installed on a standard sink base. The shorter apron does not interfere with the doors on a standard cabinet sink base. Mine is in my "my pics" idea book.

If you are using your old cabinets, make sure you ordered the "short apron" style of the Whitehaven. If you are getting new cabinets and specified a sink base for a farmhouse sink, order the standard Whitehaven which has the longer apron front - I think 9 inches rather than the short apron which is 7 inches. (I think those are the dimensions.)

To make you feel all nice warm and fuzzy (something I would consider).. you could also add extra bracing inside the cabinet. It might lose a little storage, but to gain strength and peace of mind, may be something worth looking at.
