Can You Help Me Choose A Lamp

My LR gets lots of natural light during the day, but when the sun goes down the spot where I sit on the sofa to read could use a reading light. There's a floor lamp on the other side, but I prefer the side that has an end table for my cup of tea and book.

I would like to know if you would choose a table lamp or floor lamp. What style/size? Do I try to match the shade in shape & color to the one on the other side of the sofa? Or go with something to totally different.

The room is traditional/eclectic. There are currently 3 different style lamps and 2 can lights on a dimmer above the mantel. Most of the time we just use the cans, unless we are reading.

What a beautiful home! It looks so comfy/soothing, too. I would try to find a table lamp that is similar to the floor lamp by the other end of the sofa.

Oh such a cozy room! Just beautiful.

I'd pick a table lamp, since you have 2 floor ones already..

And I'd make it totally different..no reason for it, except that I like all the lamps to be different:)

And you already clearly love eclectic-so why not to have fun.

Just make sure it gives a light you love

Because one of mine-a torchiere- was a bit dim and yellow. And we changed it for a bright white. And I found it impossible to read there-it hurt my eyes. So we changed it again for dim and yellow..:)

And I'd look for something that you can direct differently..like your black one? I love it by the way.

I found an old vintage tole light on Etsy I think..now I can read in bed, at last. Because nice but ambient light that was on the nightstand before didn't work, and overhead light is not enough at some point.

I like this small tole light..the only problem it gets really hot, after some time..so I need to remember not to touch the shade when directing it.

I didn't want to sway responses but I was leaning toward a table lamp. My concern was that it would take up too much of the usable surface space. There is a tray that pulls out from the knob, though. It's not as convenient for picking up & setting down a cup as the table itself, but I have that option.

The floor lamp on the other side is by Hubbardton Forge. The finish is distinctive and I don't think I should try to match it with an ORB finished lamp like the one on the piano. Maybe a black finish?

Any thoughts about trying to find something in glass with antique brass accents that would go back to the coffee table? Or would that be getting too mish mosh?

Personally I like eclectic when it comes to furnishing a room with lamps, although I have matching lamps in my queen bedrooms, but that's because I love the lams and they are perfect for reading in bed, so I am going to recommend that lamp. You can adjust the height and the angle of the shade, which makes it a great reading lamp.

There is ONE on eBay now, in the bronze, dirt cheap. Grab it if you like it, because they're hard to find now.

Thanks, Tibb, for that link. I did order it. The curve mirrors the curve on my coffee table legs, and the piano light. My other sofa floor lamp has that swoop, too, and the shape of the shade is complementary to that one. It's not matchy, but it "goes" and the size is perfect.

It did say there is a dent in the base. I'll see if that bothers me too much when I get it. Thinking it will be okay and just have a "collected" look ;) If I don't like it, I can keep it for a family suite we're hoping to create in the coming year in our attic space for my DS & Fam's extended visits from overseas.

My3dogs, I remember when you got your lamp. Another of your finds that I coveted because of its weight, style and efficiency. Still love it & glad to hear it's worked out so well for you.

Hopefully this isn't a repost, I'll try again.

There isn't a pic of the entire sofa wall so this may not work.

What about wall lamps on either side of the mirror? Either swing arm or sconce depending on space and use. You would have to relocate that floor lamp. But the mirror would also reflect some of the light at night as well.

I'm glad that you ordered the table lamp that Tibbie found for you. The mass of it is minimal enough to work well on that side table of yours, and still leave room for a cup of tea and a book. Those kinds of things are very important to me, too! Plus, it's very nice looking. BTW, your living room is just lovely and so inviting!

I really like the light you ordered! You might want to consider an led bulb so that the heat from your lamp is less likely to throw off the thermostat's temperature reading, since the lamp and thermostat will be quite close to each other. That looks like the perfect room for tea and a good book.

I was going to suggest a wall lamp like Annette posted. I like eclectic with lamps, too, but sometimes it's nice to have at least one pair in a room. If the one you ordered doesn't suit you, maybe think about a pair of something like she shows for either side of your mirror. Perhaps the floor lamp could then be relocated, or pick a wall light that is close in style to the floor lamp you already have.
