Master Bedroom Help??

We are closing on a home this afternoon and every square inch of the house needs painting among other things! I am still drawing a blank for the master bedroom. the horrible light does throw me off. The picture I have added is from the listing photo so ignore all furnishings. The room is large and north facing so seems very dreary. I would love to knock holes in the brick and add windows but new kitchen, upstairs flooring and many other things are not leaving budget room for that at this time. The photographer used some great back lighting to lighten up for this photo. I am retired from healthcare and because of this I do not like gray rooms, they remind me of healthcare institutions and do not give me warm and fuzzies. Our furniture is a medium dark wood. I will post a couple photos below of a few ideas I'm bouncing but not sure how will work in this dark room. Other than existing floor this room is a blank slate. Thanks for any ideas you may have!

This is a pillow I really like the colors of. Hard to tell in photo but the body of the bird and parts of the flower have a metallic color. I think this room needs some bling for sure. I am considering a mix of bedding solids with the pillows being the punch.

Most important question: how do you want to feel when you are in your bedroom?

This is a picture of bedding that I like. Mix of solids with pillows being the pop. Our bed is medium dark wood. I'm drawing a blank on wall colors if I go this route. Don't know if lighting in this room would handle tan. I like the coral but feel like might be too much. Help, ideas needed. I will explore any direction at this point. This room is isolated from main areas so I can be less concerned with color blending. Thanks!

Tibbrix, The times we have looked at the house I have thought "how dark and dingy this room looks but I can fix that". We close this afternoon and I still have no clue how to fix it!

Love the idea of warm saturated neutral. Actually, even saturated color, if you're inclined this way.

You say you love coral..most people probably wouldn't want to paint their bedroom coral, but everybody's vastly different in what he/she finds cozy. So don't shoot your ideas just yet.

If there is any possibility, now or in the future, to add a skylight in the room-not only you'll get more light but also the ceiling will seem higher, at once.

Medium brown furniture will work with any color you choose. I'm trying to think whether there will be exclusions..unless a home is a mansion with gilded walls...but no, maybe even then:)

The light is horrible because they painted the room in a very light color..is it white? anyway, poor color has nothing to reflect, thus becomes dreary.

Saturated darker and deeper color doesn't reflect much light anyway, so holds its own. You can create a very enveloping and cozy space, using colors such as Tibbrix suggested, or even bolder ones.

I don'r know whether it's because of how the photo was taken, but the room seems pretty long, and the ceiling is standard so it seems?

When you decide on your color-consider the possibility to tint your ceiling paint with the wall color. Proportion will depend on your room and your preference-but in general, I found this idea to be very helpful, when I worked with a similar room.

Crown moldings might be great as well.

And-add lights:) A lot. Floor lamp, table lamps, maybe sconces, maybe pendant in the corner, where the sitting area is. Putting a mirror on the wall that runs perpendicular to the window, will also help.

This room can become a very welcoming, enveloping, and cozy retreat.

    Congratulations on your new place!

Looks like that room has crown moulding, but I agree with April that a heftier crown would really add some oomph to that room.

I'm afraid that a saturated color will suck every drop of light out of the room. Instead, I'd look at a color like BM quiet moments which is similar to the color in the bird in the pillow.

The other alternative is to look for a very soft yellow like BM man on the moon that will make the room feel sunny all the time.

I love both of the colors Annie posted, Donah. Do believe a pastel color would be right on point on the bedroom. I have posted a link to the Benjamin Moore page with the sample of Man on the Moon and, as you can see, the colors in the pillow will go very well with that color as will you light colored bed linens.

And I agree with you about gray. As I have stated in other posts, it looks like a prison or concrete to me. And when you stated it looks institutionalized, I totally agree.

Or my beloved BM Capitol White.

Hmmm. I think Capitol White looks too dingy to brighten up that bedroom.

Nope, walnut creek, it is a very bright and happy color. Wonderful in all light.

That is good, tibbrix. It must be my monitor.

Thanks for all the ideas. I'll get some samples of those colors and try them out. I'll try to post them here. The bedroom does look long and narrow in that photo but it's actually not. I wasn't considering painting the whole room coral, just an accent wall if I did. If you look at the left side of the photo you see a red wall. There some kind of bench in the way but it's an accent wall behind claw foot tub in master bath. I want to get rid of that red wall as it's not working for me either and was considering coral or blue that would tie into bedroom a little better. Thanks again for guidance and hopefully I'll have some pleasant updates soon.

Ivory rug. You'd be amazed at how a big light bright rug can lift the mood of a dark space.

I had golden oak floors in a dark dining room with no rug. I stained the floors dark, then put a patterned ivory rug under the table and POP. The dining area looks light and happy now. No additional lighting.

If your bed is dark wood, a light rug can really help.

Also consider wall vases with fresh flowers. I put some up on my dining room wall, bought a $5 pack of those flowers with the long latin name that last for 2-3 weeks, and the room looks so homey now.

Coral and blue would be beautiful. You could do color accents if not paint. My dining room accents are coral/red and blue now (blue/ivory striped rug, red centerpieces, coral flowers).
