Dining room/Living room Disaster

Just moved into this new space and the layout is horrible, probably because the house has had some remodeling. How do I decorate this room to have a sitting area as well as share a dining room space? 1) I need a rug paint color that doesn't make the floors look yellow 2) I need a sitting area and/or office desk area.

The kitchen over looks the "dining-room"

This room is actually Rectangular the opposite way that you can see it now. (the photo must be doing that, but look at the top picture and you can see the shape better) Our table is actually placed the long way in the room, not the way you see this one.

I feel like there should be sitting because of the fire place. Thoughts?

You must have some REALLY valuable dishes in that safe.....:)

How many people would generally be seated at the dining table? Could the table ( and the ceiling light) be moved closer to the window? Could you then have a couple of small chairs by the fireplace? The room looks large....could a desk/office space be set up in the area near the two " front" Windows?

Can you post a drawing of the rooms with dimensions?

that really made me laugh! (These pictures are from the privious owner, not my safe:-) We need the table we have that sits 6. It is a large room I just feel like it might look odd to set chairs facing the fire place? there is actully room for a desk too and I'm always unsure how to place the desk... Against the wall to the person at the desk is facing outside or facing the room?

Yes, Let me do that tonight. The whole house is laid out so crazy your mind will spin. And yes, I've considered re laying out the whole floor because its so crazy.

"the layout is horrible, probably because the house has had some remodeling"-lol. so true sometimes. unfortunately..

I'll wait for your drawing. Meanwhile-is the door on the left (second pic) the main entrance door?

I also feel you let this chandelier dictate you things..which is natural of course, you see a chandelier=you make a connection "dining table spot"

Doesn't have to be this way, at all.

Try to remove this chandelier from the picture. i mean the mental picture, first thing first:)

It looks like it was originally intended to be a family room with seating and the fireplace. Are there any other rooms in proximity that you could use for a dining room? Is there room down by the door to put your table (ignoring the light for now) and have a seating area closer to the kitchen by the fireplace? Are you limited to a rectangular table or is round an option for you?

"there is actully room for a desk too and I'm always unsure how to place the desk... Against the wall to the person at the desk is facing outside or facing the room?"

It's personal preference, but I think having the desk using person facing out seems to work best (in my mind) in a room dedicated as an office. I think in a room shared for other purposes, it can look a bit like a reception area when the user faces into the room, so prefer the user facing away. Ideally, for me, it would be placed in front of one of those windows, just because I don't like looking at a wall if I can look out a window instead.

You say "sitting area and/or office desk. Which is a priority, or do you really want both, so it is just "and."

Is there a room on the other side of the kitchen? I'm also thinking that the PO took a family room and used it as a dining room.

Is this a midcentury home? Many had a combo dining area/living room and weren't intended to hold big tables in the middle like the one the POs had. Without a scale drawing it's hard to say how to arrange things, but you can get some ideas from 60 year old BH&G magazines. :)

(I might find a different spot for my mansized safe, but come on! that thing is kind of cool! I'd display it somewhere...)
