Classic Cabinet Knob Size: Too Big? Too Small? Just Right?

We'll get basic knobs like the RH Aubrey knob..but which size?

DIMENSIONS

  • ¾", 1", 1¼" or 1½"

  • 3/4" seems too small for the kitchen cabinets but of the other choices, what do you have and does it feel just right or too big or too small?

  • We don't currently have knobs so hard to judge by just looking at them.

  • Thanks

I have to try every knob style before picking one. My fat fingers have to slide between the cabinet and the knob without getting pinched. Once you narrow down the possibilities in the depth dimension, that usually limits the selection.

    Nope! There's no standard!

When we got our knobs and pulls, we "mixed and matched" b/w manufacturers. One manufacturer had the nicer looking pulls (to me, at least). For the knobs, the ones from the same manufacturer were too short - my DH's fingers didn't fit. We found another manufacturer with a longer knob "stem". Fortunately, they both had similar finishes - you can't tell they're made by different manufacturers!

I have knobs similar to the Aubrey. I brought home all 3 sizes. 1 1/2" was too big, 1" was too small, 1 1/4" was just right.

We went with the Aubrey in 1-1/4". We tried the 1-1/2" and it was just too big. For reference our rail width (or frame width) is 2-3/4". Also, the cabinet maker screwed up and put the knobs lower than my DW wanted. I think we have decided to live with where they are (I haven't thought about it at all, until I looked at this picture again).

romy718--thank you--that was my Goldilocks assumption but good to know that they are the right size now that you are using them. By the way, love your kitchen!

waterloo360t--yah! another confirmation. I think I found my size--especially as the proportions look great in the photo. Knob placement also looks fine to me--how much higher were they supposed to be? ps also a beautiful kitchen !

We did the same as buehl, except for us, the pull was too flat to comfortably fit our hands. Different knobs and pulls from same manufacturer, same finish. I would get samples first and see if you like them. For me, I wanted knobs that had a bit of flare next to the cabinet face. That way fingers wouldn't rub against the wood and wear on the cabinet finish. I wanted pulls with plenty of room for the same reason.
