Can I put an oriental rug in my modern living room?

Most furniture is solid color / leather... but my Milo Baughman scoop chairs are covered with a modern multicolor wavy line pattern, and draperies on the other side of the living space have multicolor grape / leaf pattern. Lots of blues and greens.

.. I just want to move on from the current California white shag.... will an oriental / Persian / Turkish / etc rug work? Can you show me an example of what might work?

In two photos below are the only "patterned" textiles in my living space - the wavy lined fabric is on the scoop chairs and the other fabric is on floor to ceiling draperies on the other side of common space (separate sitting / lounge area).

I love oriental or persian carpets in very contemporary settings but they need to be the star really not much in the way of pattern with anything else you might be able to pull off this blue rug with the chairs but not the drapes those do not say modern to me anyway

I think the drapery "thing" doesn't work with the feel of the room, no matter the rug. ( sorry) perhaps post a photo of that. Some nice selections below size depending The more beige the better.

Think about a contemporary area rug. Not a lot of pattern, but with your colors (which are great, by the way). Something that won't fight with what you have going on already. And add some throw pillows in your colors and with some complementary patterns. Here's a picture of the rug I used in my dining area when I wanted some color, but didn't want to fight with the area rug in the seating area of the great room.

Not your colors, but just the idea.

i love orientals, if you choose one with low contrast in colors it will add less pattern, such as patricia's second photo.

OK I'm trying to upload a photo of the draperies --

-- the scoop chairs were in front of the draperies but I re-arranged the furniture and put them in the main living area - I wouldn't call the style modern, but maybe mid century modern + a little bit of modern + lodge style

we did an oriental rug and now i regret it... unless everything else is solid, its v hard to make it work. Id take a look at a soft

sisal rug with a border that coordinates with your other fabrics? top of photo... this is what i wish i had done in living room so i am taking this look into dining room...

just looking at your room... id DEFINITELY skip the oriental, way too much competition with the other beautiful fabrics and textures in the room.. but adding color to rug with a border could work like a charm!

Traditional Oriental Rugs have been around for a reason. they really do transcend most any style that has come and gone over the years. Just my 2 cents but truly the safest bet if you are going to spend money on a quality item...

It's not the room or your furniture that wouldn't look right with an oriental rug--it's the fabric. If you had solid pieces an oriental rug would be great.

Move the chairs back in the room with the drapes. Then you have nothing in the living room to compete with the rug. Pick out an Oriental rug that you love and work back from that.

I think you can. A bit of a challenge for colors, but if you get the scale correct, all should fall into place.

Interesting question, but just think about some of the colors used in the mid-eastern cultures and their rugs are “Oriental”. You just need the right one.

JudyG what rug is that? The living areas are all wide-open, with the space only being defined by rugs and furniture arrangement. I could see moving the scoop chairs back to the lounge area near the draperies as in the original picture, and then using a rug like the one you posted in the now neutral colored main portion of the living area. .... I would just like to know the source of the rug that you posted or style, etc

I agree with leaving the chairs with the draperies. The fabric for the draperies seem better suited for a traditional kitchen type area.
