Please help me choose a rug and decide on new fireplace

last modified: 9 years ago

My style is colorful, ethnic, Craigslist. Aka eclectic. I really like the room so far but can't find any rug that works. Please give me some ideas. I originally wanted to go with a vintage Persian in blues, golds and reds but they're almost impossible to find in the size I need (8x8 square) and at a price I can afford (Max $700 preferably less). Should I change directions or keep looking? Do you think a different size would work better? Current rug is 6.5 square.

I also would love some ideas to upgrade my builder special fireplace. I was considering this groutless mother of pearl tile. What do you think? What I would really like is a solid slab of calacatta gold but that seems well out of my budget.

I will be installing pale gold silk curtains, when I find the exact shade I'm looking for. And the empty wall behind the sofa will have this large tapestry hanging up:

Any other feedback or advice is also appreciated!

I know ecarpetgallery sometimes has square rugs, and they always have sales. Here are some close to 8' square:

    8'10" x 9'10" Qashqai

    8' x 9' Qashqai

    8'3" x 8'3" Bijar

Going by the Canadian prices, which I see on the website, and knowing that the US prices should be quite a bit lower, I think you shouldn't have a problem with your max, esp if you use their daily code.

A carpet shop can cut carpet to any size or shape and bind the edges. Years ago our friends had a fireplace at an angle like yours and their carpet was cut to fit the angle perfectly.

For the surround, you should be able to get a remnant of marble or granite quite reasonably at your local granite shops.

    You need a bigger rug.

Thank you Becky! I'm drawn to that style of rug too. But do you think they may be too busy for the room?

@joanie a local yard quoted me $2000 for a slab of calacatta gold marble. I don't want Carrera because there isn't any grey in my room. What do you think is a good price?

@ anglophilia do you mean bigger than 8x8? Why? If you mean bigger than current rug yes, that's why I'm looking for a new one.

Also does anyone have any thoughts on the mother of pearl tile?

"Also does anyone have any thoughts on the mother of pearl tile?" I think it would look great in your space.

That's very kind always1step! Thank you!

Tara, I've always thought that a good Persian or Persian-type rug functions as a neutral. But looks so much better than many actual neutral rugs : ) .

I think the tile would work well with all the shimmery accents you have. But I do like your idea of the calacatta gold -- what about calacatta gold tile? Like this from Home Depot? That one is polished, but they also have it honed.

Not square but close and with the colors you mentioned .

I guess you are right Becky about them functioning as neutrals, but somehow I'm still unsure. Wish I could try one in my home before I decide. I considered calacatta gold tiles, but I'm not crazy about them with my style of mantle, with a beefier mantle I think they'll work great. And remodeling the mantle is out of the question since DH isn't too keen on putting money into stuff like the fireplace that will stay with the house if we move. :S

Thank you Raven, I do love those colors.

What do you all think of this rug for this space? It's only 5x7 but I could layer it over a large plain seagrass rug. Does it anchor the space in a way a more vibrantly colored rug wouldn't? It's a karastan and feels great underfoot, but is the style too dated?

    Too dated....

Thanks vpierce, but do you think the colors work? I'm really starting to like these colors in the living room. Should I be looking for a black and gold rug in a more modern pattern, like this?

Or how about this one? Ah I'm so confused!! Somebody told me its best to pick your rug first and work from there! Wish I had done that!

Tara, I think I've read in other threads from ingrid that esalerugs.com lets you try out rugs and send them back if necessary, with free shipping and free returns.

Here are their 8' square rugs.

I'm kind of confused about the calacatta gold tiles -- if you'd like a calacatta gold slab, and are considering mother of pearl tiles, calacatta gold tiles won't work?

Oh I didn't know that about sale rugs! Thank you! About the tiles, the mother of pearl ones are groutless so I was hoping they would look like more like a continuous sheet. The calacatta gold tiles will need to be grouted and somehow grout lines aren't what I want.

Oh that Serape Heritage Raven posted is YUMMY. I noticed it has a "make an offer" option...very interesting.

You know I've been going back to that one Raven posted over and over. I do think it's gorgeous! I'm just not 100% certain.

Here's a 20% off coupon to push you closer: ecgwelcome. No taxes either. I just ordered a rug and I am super stoked :-)

Aw thank you! I signed up for emails and got that coupon too. I'm so tempted to order but I'm wondering if they may have a better sale closer to Black Friday. I bought a rug for my dining room on Rugsusa last year around Black Friday and I've been wanting another similar one and it's been almost double the price ever since. Hmmm, decisions!

Did you try the make an offer feature always1step?

    last modified: 9 years ago

Glad y'all like it . I try those make an offer every time and it works every time , I get a better price . Always1step did you get that rug? I also always check Google for codes for the website and often find good deals .

Raven: I ordered a different rug. The rug I ordered didn't have the "make an offer" but I did click on the make an offer option on the rug in the link raven posted but it wanted you to "login" so that is as far as I got.

Raven can you use a coupon code and the make an offer together? I'm guessing not but just want to check with you.

I don't know if you can on that site some allow it but you use the code at the end of the transaction usually and it will tell you if it is acceptable . You can always still cancel. For this site I saw a 33%off code for a first time purchase so I would think it would be allowed .

Just want to share that I think your room is quite attractive already - I love the rug raven shared (and the one always1step ordered !).... I cannot visualize on the fireplace but everything else selected works great together. ( and seriously not to push you, but that rug!!! and it sure seems like a great deal to me at the current price......)

I am rather liking the rug you have. I like the orange accent and the stripe. They seem a great juxtaposition to your other elements. Too bad it isn't bigger...maybe there is a matching one, and you could lay them side by side.

The only thing I can add is I feel your pain about rugs and the angled fireplace since I have one too. Maybe live with what you have and get all the other elements in place and the right rug will come along . . .
