Square Plates And Bowls?

I'm contemplating changing out our everyday/casual entertaining dinnerware and want to go a bit contemporary and am thinking about shapes other than round.

Anyone have odd-shaped dinnerware? How do you like it?

I don't have it, but I do like the look. However, I've heard that they are much more prone to chipping.

They can be gorgeous but try to get a sample and see if they fit in the DW first.

I picked up four white square ironstone plates -- salad size. Durable yet nice looking. Sides/borders are sloped up a bit. I love them. Asian food looks better on these, IMO. I cook a lot of Southeast Asian food and appetizers, so wanted a simple clean look. However I grab one all the time for just about everything. They are fine in our KA dishwasher, but bump-stop the rotating glass tray in our small-medium sized microwave. We are very informal here and usually don't do matching dinnerware.

Why not pick up a 4-pack of medium sized sq plates and see if you like them?

Asian food looks so appealing on the square plates.

This is the set I'm thinking about-it has a more rounded square shape than angular:

I love my multicolor melamine from SCAD. Two sizes, both square. I will look for a photo.

I had 4 dinner-sized ones from Ikea to try, and I gave them away when we moved. My husband is left-handed and when he cooks and plates a meal, I couldn't turn the plate effectively to eat comfortably, at least not a 45 degree turn. Yes, you plate differently if you are right or left handed, and you eat by such a preference.

Mimipadv - We'd have those chipped in no time ;)

here's the back of my discount outlet plates. I also use mine in oven. We like an informal lifestyle.

I forgot, they don't make mine anymore.

Don't know ho you feel about melamine but I just wasted time I didn't have looking at all these fun plates~!

I don't think you can get the square plates my oldest son has -- Gorham Boulder Creek. But if you can, it's been good stuff. It was sold as a set that came with square plates but round bowls. They are bone china -- no chips. They'd have killed pottery or stoneware by now. LOL

ETA: I couldn't get more of the Gorham, but I bought my oldest some fruit bowls in the Denmark vitrified porcelian, They are heavier than the bone china, but have held up well also. Found those at Home Goods.

I like the look of a lot of melamine dishware, but dislike that they can't go into the microwave. Well, they can, but eventually it causes them to become brittle and break.

I have square dinnerwear at our beach house. I love the square plates, they have a better presentation. They also fit nicely in the dishwasher. I don't love the square bowls. Not as practical for things like soups and cereal.

I'd have no problem with square plates, but I really like my bowls to fit comfortably in my hand, so not sure that square bowls would work for me. Yes, I often eat away from the dining table, carrying the bowl/plate to my little butler's table or holding it in my hand. One of the reasons that I dislike oversized bowls and plates, also.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with the Noritake Swirl WoW (white on white) in round vs. square. The comments about turning so the plating is just right for each person really makes sense.

That would have been the furthest thing from my mind, but DH and I do enjoy watching tv and eating off of trays once in awhile, and the round will make life easier.

Used square plates for 2 years, no problems at all.
