Need Kitchen/Cabinet Layout Ideas for Barker Cabinets

We are remodeling a condo and have an architectural mock-up of a kitchen layout. I believe they have it as 17' by 8'. The idea was to have an open layout, but as I look at the floor plans, I am wondering if the location of the kitchen and layout is the best use of the space.

We have ceilings that are 12' high, so the idea was to have cabinets go all the way up to the ceiling to optimize space, since we do not have a pantry or much storage options. We would integrate a library ladder. We would also like to have a kitchen island, but I have heard from the architect that there is not enough space as the island would be right in the way of people walking through the door to enter the kitchen.

Additionally, we would like to order barker cabinets, but we are feeling completely overwhelmed with designing the layout of the kitchen. I've attached a photo, any ideas on location of kitchen or layout of kitchen

would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome Future Materializes!

    I have a few questions...

    • First, do you have a fully measured layout of the Kitchen and Dining space for us to see? One that has each door/doorway/window/wall measured and labeled as well as the distances b/w each door/doorway/window/wall? From what I think I see, your architect may be right - and not just the issue with blocking the doorway, I don't know if you have room b/w the island and table. (It would be helpful if you had the same for the Living Room area as well.)
    • What can/cannot be changed? Can rooms be switched? Can doors be moved? Walls? You appear to have a very large Living Room...
    • How high off the floor are the windows in the Dining Room?
    • Is that a banquette in your Dining Room area?
    • Where does the doorway to the left lead to? Bedrooms only?
    • Where is the main entry - on the bottom?
    • What's on the far right in what appears to be an alcove of some sort? (to the right of the Living Room)
    • What is your family composition (general - e.g., kids' age range, # of adults, etc.)
    • What are your plans for the space? Do you entertain a lot? Large groups? Small groups?

A full-floor sketch would be helpful - it helps us see how traffic flows in and around the Kitchen and how the Kitchen relates to the entire floor.

Have you had a chance to read the Layout Help FAQ?

How do I ask for Layout Help and what information should I include?

Thank you for taking a look. I have included my entire plan. To answer your questions:

    • First, do you have a fully measured layout of the Kitchen and Dining space for us to see? One that has each door/doorway/window/wall measured and labeled as well as the distances b/w each door/doorway/window/wall? From what I think I see, your architect may be right - and not just the issue with blocking the doorway, I don't know if you have room b/w the island and table. (It would be helpful if you had the same for the Living Room area as well.) **I don't have complete information. I need to measure. Ceiling to Floor height is 12'. **
    • What can/cannot be changed? Can rooms be switched? Can doors be moved? Walls? You appear to have a very large Living Room... **Rooms can switch. The idea was an open living/dining/kitchen area. We live in the city, so the space is not large. The space where the bedrooms start can not be changed**
    • How high off the floor are the windows in the Dining Room? ** 3 feet, i believe**
    • Is that a banquette in your Dining Room area? **built-in cabinetry, but we decided to do a kitchen table instead**
    • Where does the doorway to the left lead to? Bedrooms only? **bedrooms and bathrooms**
    • Where is the main entry - on the bottom? **see plan?
    • What's on the far right in what appears to be an alcove of some sort? (to the right of the Living Room)
    • What is your family composition (general - e.g., kids' age range, # of adults, etc.) ** I have one toddler, who is screaming my name right now! 21 months. I'm hoping to have a second.
    • What are your plans for the space? Do you entertain a lot? Large groups? Small groups? **we do not entertain a lot. it will mostly be a family area.

Okay. I have the measurements. Please see hand-drawn plan.

You can consider switching kitchen and dining.

I'm thinking an L shaped kitchen with an island on wheels and a bench/banquet for the DR. On the new DR side you may have room for pantry cabs.

    Thank you Sena01! It's a good idea.

I was thinking along the lines of moving the kitchen to the front, with the sink under the window. but putting a table in the middle space. Disclaimer--I don't know anything about Barker cabinets and I don't care for a cooktop or range in an island, but in this plan it makes the most sense:

Curious what you decided to do!

Hi piper - we had to downscale and no walls were removed, so the kitchen became much smaller and not much choice on location!

I was thinking hunk that it looked like your layout was ideal. Only thing I would’ve added was a wall of uppers and lowers on the rear wall (without windows) in the dining area, and maybe a bigger island.
