How to pick contractors??

Hi guys, complete newbie here..
I'm buying a 4 br house in the greater LA area in a few months.. and it'll be an older house (~1970). I would like to completely remodel it to make it look brand new, just how they do in all those home renovation tv shows u see everywhere. We are expecting to put $100k-$150k into it (is this a reasonable estimate?). My question is what's the best way to find a really good and cheap contractor/designer? Using Yelp? Using this app? Any other ways you recommend?
If anyone reccomend a someone in the la/Orange County area please let me know!

For starters, I would double your budget. How many square feet is the house? Also, I'm sorry to say that good and cheap is unrealistic. I wish you well in your project.

We will buy around a 2300 sq foot house. Probably 2.5 bathrooms. Really double the budget?! So $200k-$300k?! Wow.. ok, thanks for your input!

Double the budget won't be nearly enough to renovate an entire home in LA. TV fiction is very far from real world reality.

It is much cheaper in the long run to buy a home that is already exactly what you want it to be. If an already renovated home is out of your price range, then your renovations will be too. It will cost you 30-60% more to get the same ''after'' result yourself. Cost vs Value

Sophie, I agree with you. California costs have zero relationship to what a viewer sees on the TV rehab/flip shows.
