What's going on with my Bosch induction cooktop?

It's been installed for about 1.5 years. Was cooking on two hobs tonight, both on around level 7. About 10 minutes after turning them on, the whole range top essentially shut off and started beeping in three-beep increments (beep-beep-beep-pause), and the display showed "h" (for hot) on the two elements i had been using, and "0" in the two unused hobs. I tried to press all the buttons to see if anything worked (off/on, selecting a different hob, panel lock, etc) but the touch screen was totally non responsive.

As a side note, our house is 150 years old and the electrical was updated over the years and we apparently had enough capacity to install the cooktop when we did the kitchen reno without doing a power-up. But i've always thought this induction unit took longer to boil water than our identical bosch induction cooktop did in our last house, so i've always wondered if the electrical wasn't up to snuff. But i could be imagining that, and/or this could be unrelated.

Ideas?

Could you have tripped a breaker? I'm looking at getting a Bosh. Could you tell me what is the smallest pot you can use on the largest hob?

I didn't trip a breaker. But i did subsequently trip it in order to reset the issue (when it was still beeping after 3 or 4 minutes). And then the problem went away.

I generally really like the Bosch, but i feel like this one was installed with inadequate electrical inputs (but again, i may just be imagining). The units themselves are great. Not sure the absolute smallest that works, but my husband makes stovetop espresso every morning with a device that is 3.5" in diameter and it has always worked. But he does that on one of the smaller hobs. Not sure about the largest hob.

sandychin - I used a 4.5" tri-ply stainless pan to test hob recognition during my search for an induction cooktop. In my testing it was not recognized on the Benchmark large hob. I went with the frameless wolf induction mainly due to hob layout/user interface/cost.

In the absence of any comments from owners, I'll say that the shutdown sounds like a system error or sensor processor misread. (Think MS WIndows error messages where rebooting seems to fix things.) A friend's Bosch will occasionally flash an "F2" code in the display for overheated electronics, but maybe your cooktop also has audio error codes? Is there anything about audio codes in the troubleshooting section of your cooktop's user guide? If not, I suggest you call Bosch customer service to ask them if we do not hear from somebody else with a Bosch induction cooktop.

As for your present cooktop being slower than the one in your previous home, it might not be your imagination. You mentioned having a 150 year-old home. That makes me wonder if your house may be supplied power at 208v rather than 240v? (What we used to call 220v power actually can be either 208v or 240v -- you might have 208v service just as a historical legacy in your neighborhood although there also can be modern technical reasons.) Anyway, pretty much every home electric stove and cooktop sold in North America is rated to run on 208v power as well as 240v power. But, at 208v power, max burner power for your cooktop will be something like 14% less than with 240v power. Time to boil on max power will be a bit slower. You might check with your power company/provider to find out what the rated power to your home is.

Still curious what the smallest it will recognize in the center, as that is the one I use nearly all the time.

The "the rule of thumb" for induction cooktops and pots is the pot should be no less nor no greater than 1 inch on either side of the size of the burner ring.

Basically on a 9 inch burner you can use a pan that is 7 inches to 11 inches.

Perfect. Thanks! That will work for me. I knew the Bosh has an adjustable potsense, but I wanted to hear from someone that it really does work.

How about the Bosh induction 500 series? Does anyone have one that could tell me the range of pot that can be used on the center hob?

sandychin: you should start a new thread and then u will get more answers to your specific questions!! everyone is trying to help the OP with his/her problem since its his/her thread.

Sandychin, it's the same rule of thumb. No more than 1 inch over or under the size of the burner indicator ring.

H202, did you continue to experience the beeping problem? We have a 16-month-old Bosch induction range that is doing the same thing, very often. I’m interested to know if it is fixable.

Bosch induction is the worse, mine starts turning on and off and making noise in the middle of the night. Of course it does it shortly after the warranty has run.

H202, Jack lane and HU-369333305: I'm currently working on installing the Bosch 800 series 30" induction. While reading the install manual https://media3.bosch-home.com/Documents/9001410846_D.pdf (pg 6 to be exact) there are specific under cabinet ventilation slots required so the metal box housing the electromagnetic inductors can cool. These are 21" x 2" high slots on the back of the cabinet, and 2 sides if the cabinet is less than 29 1/2" interior width. A reviewer who had this model confirmed that Bosch would not honor the warranty as the retro-fit install did NOT put these vent slots into her cabinet and her unit constantly shuts down due to overheating.

So I'm curious if your units were installed with any of these under counter vent slots? My island configuration would only allow a bottom kick plate and right sided vent under cabinet cutout. Hate to spend the 2K just to find that it would be insufficient ventilation. This is irregardless of OVER the cook top vent hood.
