Family room nearly complete (PIP) just need large area rug!

I have struggled with this room for 10 years and I'm (finally) really pleased with the way it has taken shape. The big item remaining is an area rug. Walls are SW Anew Gray.

I really don't want to spend a fortune on a rug, under $1K would be nice.

Here is the space coming in from our front door-

Areal view from second floor-

Finally- accent colors- navy, raspberry, and citron, Ottoman is a true navy.

One criteria- cannot be looped. I have a Dyson that I love and adore and it yanks rug loops. So, I don't know what the technical term is, lol, but I need unlooped ;)

I am open to all suggestions, thank you!!! My style is traditional leaning towards transitional.

Ida- do you prefer the one jess posted from esalerugs or Oly's from Overstock. I actually like them both very much!

This one is nice too pink overstock rug

    Ahhhhh! So many choices!!!!

So many wonderful suggestions. Your room is so warm and inviting. It'll be gorgeous no matter which rug you go with. So jealous of those windows!!!

This is the one I thought was especially pretty.

Still love the raspberry rug jessh posted. Will look stunning!!

    Sorry this is so rough.

I would also bring out the raspberry! Luscious!

That really looks terrific!! Nice find Jess! And nice to see it in the space aktillery!

I am not sure about the raspberry rug in that room. May be too overpowering and the room leans more modern/ tradtional than tradtional. I think a more muted one like artillery posted would work better and something you would not tire of as quickly. For size, the rule of thumb Is for it to be big enough to have the feet of furniture on the rug. Of course there are always exceptions depending on the room and furniture layout.

^^ I agree. Seeing it mocked up in the room really helps, and really makes the rug compete with the sophisticated, subtle elements of the room. I too think that a more subdued rug would be much prettier in the living space than the bright punch-colored rug would be.

I prefer the rug that aktillery9 posted. ;)

Lauren0319 - Would you share the name of your sectional? We are looking into either a new sectional, or a full size sofa and midsize (between and sofa and love seats) to angle together like a sectional. Yours looks similar to what we have been eyeing.

Also, where did you find the narrow sofa table. We will also need something like that...width, please?

Aw really? I totally do NOT have an eye for design/décor which is why I trust all of you :) But I was really excited about the raspberry rug! I think the one aktillery posted is very nice too..... to me it brings out the citron which is fine.. I just love the raspberry :)

nhb22- the sectional is from Ethan Allen and but husband made the table. I'll measure it for you when I get home.

Lauren - I really think you'd just have to see the rug in your room to know for sure. It's a gorgeous rug, and it may actually look darker and less pink and "popping" once in place on the floor.

Lauren remember that with esalerugs you can return the rug for free if it does not work. So you can try out a few different different to see what works for you. BTW

    I love the raspberry rug.

I think you'll likely regret not at least trying the raspberry rug. You'll always wonder how terrific it may have looked!

I love the raspberry rug and the pink one but, but actually think for this room I'd go with something a little less bright, like this:

    Or our standby

    Vintage look

I agree with nsm. I'd look for something less 'vivid'. I don't think the raspberry should be the star of the room. I have to admit though that I'm not a fan of rugs that 'pop'.

Here's the thing. I'd say a majority of posters here aren't vivid color people. Me- I am. Muted tones aren't my thing. I would get the raspberry rug in a heartbeat! You have nothing to lose when returns are free!! Do it!

I think it's because I am getting tired of all the red that I have in my home. If you like the raspberry, go for it!

Thank you for the information on the couch. We are looking at Smith Brothers custom made couches.

I'll just have your DH make a table for me :) ...WOW!

Poking my head in....your room is really lovely and I'm looking forward to seeing the final rug.

You mentioned your sectional is Ethan Allen. Have you had it long? How is it wearing? I've been considering a sectional from them, but saw some really bad recent reviews (and photos) that I'm not sure what to do with now. Read they moved production to Mexico recently. Thanks!

I agree 100%. You're excited about it, try it out! This is your home. One we can't see it IRL, and second, it only has to please you.

FWIW, I think the lighting in the room would tone down the raspberry color. Rugs always look different on the floor than they do hanging, and I think the lighting in the room is lower than what was used when the rug was photographed for marketing purposes. It's still definitely going to be a colorful piece, but not quite as grand a statement as it looks in the mock-up.

Very good points about the lighting differences cawaps. The photo of the rug is in way brighter light than the photo of the room. At first I thought the raspberry rug was too intense but I think it would look lovely. I wasn't a fan at first, but now I do think it's a winner.

-----I really also like the old standy that nsm posted (but I don't remember if it's more red/rust than raspberry?).

I bit the bullet and ordered the raspberry one! I'll be sure to post pics! Any advice for unwrapping in case I decide to return? Can I just tape it and return it or should I save the plastic?

Yay! I can't wait to see it in your room. I've only ordered smaller rugs but my experience was it was impossible to save the original packaging because it is rolled so tightly inside I had to destroy it to remove the rug. Hopefully, others will have tips that worked.

You will need to wrap in plastic, but think about using heavy duty contractor's black bags or something like that (even a heavy duty plastic tarp - like used for painting, those clear ones). Or if big enough you could double up a thinner one and just tape it well. Doesn't have to look pretty!

But, hopefully, you won't have to return it.

Having returned four rugs I would recommend that you save the original packing. You only have to open it at one end to slide out the rug. Getting it back in is a little harder, but have two people roll it tightly and it will work.

I can't wait to see it in your space. I hope it works for you.

    TADA!

It's bright and bold but both hubby and I really like it. WDYT???

Does it need to be moved back to align with the back of the sectional?

My only "pause" is the rest of my house is quite neutral. I like color but I'm unsure how to carry it through the rest of my house.

For example, here is a thread with our kitchen and dining area. Much more neutral. I like the rug I've chosen but is my family room too bold when compared with the rest of our house?

    GW link with kitchen/dining pics

(fwiw, we've lived here for 10 years and just completed a pretty extensive reno on our first floor.)

    It looks great!!!!!

Perfection, it doesn't matter about the other rooms. You love it, I love it, done deal lol.

I love it!!! Makes me want one.

    Looks great!

For your dining room/kitchen, just get some colorful fruit and/or pink, yellow, or red flowers :)

I love it, too! If it's the only colorful room, that is totally ok in my mind.

I would, however, pull the rug back so it's under the sectional part facing the fireplace and leave the floor in front of the chair bare, so it looks deliberate and not like it didn't quite fit there. I'd go to the back of the sectional, or even further if necessary to kind of center the pattern/border with the sectional part that you face in the picture.

Olychick you give great advice and thank you! I was thinking the same thing just needed it confirmed. :)

I love it! The colors work great with your drapes and coffee bench.

    It looks amazing!

    That is just perfect!!

    Perfect!! Very cozy room.

Regarding position of rug/furniture, any chance you can pull the sectional out away from the corner? Just a thought...

    It looks great!!!

You say you struggled with the room but it looks great!

I am new to posting to GW, although I've been a long time fan and follower. I just have to say that that rug is stunning, and looks fabulous in your space!

    Stunning!!!!!

I think this this looks wonderful!!

Ok, so not sure how you feel about more traditional art or birds-- Audubon is a classic to me. But, I had this print in mind for you. On your wall behind the sectional.

I love all the colors- the earthy tones mixed with the vibrancy of the pinks.

    Gorgeous!! Beautiful room:)

I shy away from too much color, but when I see rooms/ rugs like this, I need to be more brave:)

It looks amazing! I'm so glad you shared the update--I was just wondering about you and your rug adventure over Christmas break.

I'm glad you found something you really like. Just a small consideration, but the Chinese vase at the corner of the fireplace looks rather unbalanced, and the chair by it seems a little too large for that space. You could try positioning it where it faces the long side of the ottoman, i.e. facing towards the windows.

Wowza! Great choice! I love it and it looks gorgeous in the room.

It's positively FANTASTIC!!!!! Your place looks soooo inviting and warm and happy. Well done!
