Do you change your decor from summer to winter?

I do, but only in two rooms. In the master bedroom I have summer and winter curtains, bedspread and shams, and I make a few changes in the living room, as shown here. How about the rest of you? Do you prefer a warmer look in the winter?

I've since changed the area rug to something a little less bland for this summer look.

The curtains, pillows and area rug have been changed to warmer tones.

Gosh, yes the house is seasonal but only because the seasons dictate part of the decoration of the house -- Christmas is tree and greens on the mantle; fall is mums and other garden flowers on tabletops and the green plants brought in for the winter; winter is either oranges or apples in bowls on the tables and paperwhites and when we can find them, branches that I force as well as throws to cozy up with when it's really cold outside; spring is big bouquets of jonquils and tulips and summer is a barer house with garden flowers on tables and the house plants finally outside so it is cleaner and more sparse. And upstairs in fall and winter, there is a cozy duvet on the bed under the Bates bedspread (so it's a bit lumpy) -- in spring and summer it's just the bedspread. I don't change curtains or slipcover furniture or change bedspreads but the seasons are deifnitely reflected in what is on mantles and tabletops and in windows!

Only the bedding. I'd love to have lightweight curtains ruffling in the breeze during the summer and heavy curtains in the winter. I don't really have the storage space though.

I like the seasonal changes at your abode.

Isn't it amazing how animals always find the coziest spots ? It looks like one is hogging the best spot so he can toast his tummy (or she).

We have 4 seasons and I do a nod to each of them. Sue I have a pot like the one on your chair in front of the cozy fireplace. Your dogs are so comfy there!

Ingrid, yup, she's the older "sister" so she gets first dibs. She will nudge our Frenchie out of the way to get closer to the fire. It's funny to watch.

I add wool throws in the LR in the winter. I change out my bedding and pillows in all 4 seasons. Don't change curtains and don't have rugs. The cats and dogs love their winter wool blankets too. :). Sorry about photo size. If I change it it blurs.

Throws get put away in the summer, bedding changes in MBR only, flowers change. But oh how I wish I could afford summer slip covers for EVERYTHING! Interior design guru, Suzanne Rheinstein, has wonderful ones that I covet.

My mother used to take up the wool rugs and put down sisal, she had a summer slipcover for the nubby wool sofa, and a chair, and she took down the heavy draperies and put up white cotton Priscilla curtains that she starched (using the old kind one cooked!). And the chandelier had cheese cloth wrapped around this. It took her a week of hard work to do all this, and yes, she DID do it all herself!

I do make seasonal changes between spring/summer and autumn/winter. Bedding, throws, towels, decorative pillows, decorative accessories and dishes all change. Then, for a month, Christmas decorations get added.

I have dishes and serving pieces that I change out seasonally. Some artwork, accessories, throw pillows, and throws. We have four distinct seasons here, but I don't change out rugs, bedding, draperies, etc.

They don't call me FESTIVE for nothing!! Swapping out curtains is a new one. WOW.

Have always wanted to do more seasonal decorating. Right now it is pretty much just Fall, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and then the rest of the year is the same, Need to up my game and come up with a few unique accessories for spring and summer.

Yes. I change out the throws, covers on decorative pillows, candles, table runner & bed coverings. I love that just small changes make rooms seem fresher and reflect the seasons.

I used to change my bedspread in the summer, but since we got central A/C a few years ago, I stopped doing that, as I prefer my heavy chenille bedspread. I have fabric to make some new bedspreads but have not gotten around to that.

The only changes I made are what flowers I bring in from outside in the evening, and in the winter, I bring them in a bit earlier than in the summer. In the fall and winter, I have certain bromeliads blooming that I bring in, orchid cactus in the spring, and different various bromeliads in the summer. I also bring certain orchids indoors in November through February, even if they are not blooming, as they do not like temps below 50°. The cymbidiums stay outdoors all year because they are too big to bring inside, but I used to bring those inside in the evenings in the winter when they were smaller.

If nothing is blooming that I can easily bring in, I have some miniature bromeliads that I can bring in that have very decorative leaves, and they grow in small clumps.

This is the one I am bringing inside at the moment.

Here are some miniatures I can bring inside when nothing is blooming that I can bring inside.

Just in the bedroom really. I bring out the more wintery feeling bed linens, the big comforter, and hang the drapes on the schoolhouse door to help stop drafts.

I will say that changing drapes is not fun, nor is torturing pillows into tight-fitting shams, which is the reason I haven't done the bedroom change-over yet. For now I'm just throwing a duvet over our thin summer quilt and calling it good. However, today will be the day, or so I've promised myself.

When my mother was doing all that changing, there was no AC and people fund whatever they could to make the house feel lighter and cooler. Windows were open and there was an attic Danforth night. Draperies were removed as the woukd have become very dirty, and the cotton Priscilla's could be washed -even bleached, as necessary. They also felt lighter and cooler.

Those of you who are too young to ever have experienced Summer's without AC, would be astounded at what we did to feel cooler.

I would love to change my decor for the seasons. We painted the walls neutral and have neutral hardwood and tile floors just for this reason. Maybe when I get more time we can do it. Right now we change the bed linens from cotton to flannel when it gets cold.

A bit. As others said, in winter the big houseplants that normally live on the screened in porch come inside and warm throws are everywhere in the living room. I have lots of fancy table runners for my dining room table and change them according to the season/holiday.

And I have a display in a basket hanging in the stairwell that 3 seasons of the year has golf stuff in it but now it has a rolled-up throw and a stuffed bear with a muffler matching the throw. (We live on a golf course.)

I grew up without AC. Nobody had it. It first appeared in supermarkets and everyone loved to go grocery shopping on very hot days. Cars didn't have it either and every window was down, hairdo be damned, a cigarette in every hand. I remember my mom lying on the cool tile floor in the hallway, a large fan blowing air up her muumuu. Nobody laughed; it was too hot.

I still don't have AC in my house. A few days are tough, but mostly it's fine.

I have household seasonal rituals, things like putting away blankets, or getting them out, putting away the coats and hats from the hall tree or getting them back out. A couple rugs will be changed out for the summer, and bed linens of course. I have a china display cabinet that I will change and decorate with different patterns according to the season. And wall art.... there are a few pieces that are extremely seasonal, so I'll switch them out. We're in the south, so winters are short, but I love to decorate for fall and winter because I like to savor it while I can.

For the last several years the only changing I did was in the greatroom. Lampshades, pillows, throw, and a few accessories went from black to cream. This past spring I took a *big* plunge and made those changes to blue, rather than cream, and love it. Since the kitchen is right near the GR it got a few changes also. At the moment i've gone back to the cream because of Christmas. I have pink lights and pink decorations on the tree and like to use the ivory pillows(i tie big pink bows around them!), and also bought a couple of light pink~they'll be other little pops of pink here and there too. Guess at this point you could say I change out 3 times a year. ;)

I decorate with a summer style pretty much all year even though I live in Ontario ( and it's cold here now!... brrr!)

i just try to warm things up in the colder months by changing pillows and throws... more ' furry' ones than linen etc.

I used to change draperies as well but haven't been doing so for last couple of years.

Just throw on the fireplace and talk myself into being warm:)

I've heard of people doing Spring Cleaning when winter was over and also of taking down storm windows/doors, but I don't know whether that is still done today. When I visited my brother in Albany (where he was getting his MFA), I noticed that there was an extra window on the outside, so that if I opened my window from the inside, there was still another closed window on the outside. That seemed very odd and awkward to me. I've never had storm windows or doors, but then I've also never had a basement or a mudroom, or even a coat closet, for that matter.

Nice subject. Our fireplace insert is an EPA-approved furnace that can put out tremendous heat, so in winter the decor on the (fireproof) mantle is changed out to fireproof. A large antique platter in warm colors replaces an oil landscape in pastels, etc.

We have too many windows to be able to afford to change out curtains (14 108" panels in the LRM alone), which I'd love to do (they need to come down for cleaning anyway!).

Someday, though, I'll sew up some winter curtains for the kitchen, which is almost as bad. The room is in cream/very pale yellow with pine flooring, colors chosen specifically as background for changing out colors as desired, So just switching out the tablecloth, pillows in the window niche, and decor on the hood shelf over the stove from summer colors to winter, emphasis red, is easy and makes a real difference.
