Is it me or Clorox doesn't smell like Clorox anymore?

I started buying the splash less Clorox and no longer smell that characteristic smell. What's up? I miss smelling my cloroxed whites.

I believe the splash less Clorox has a lot of added fragrance, and it smells to have a lot less chlorine bleach in it. Clorox splash less is practical, but if you are using, wanting or needing real bleach....splash less is not for you!!

Regular liquid Clorox smells just like regular liquid Clorox.

I'd been using the Clorox splashless for a couple of years when someone pointed out the tiny lettering on the back of the container that says 'not to sanitize or disinfect'. Who knew...I didn't. So all those washes of hankies and underwear, dish towels I thought were coming out of the wash germ free may not have been. This house has about a 5' roof overhang all the way around, underside painted white that was showing some spots of mildew here and there and I had just cleaned it with a bucket, brush, spin 'n span and a little Clorox splashless, garden hose to rinse - overhead and the entire circumference of the house, it wasn't fun. I may have gotten it clean, may not have killed the mildew spores.

I'm back to buying regular, splashy Clorox ;0)

Be aware that not all chlorine bleach products are valid for sanitizing / killing germs. Some are just for whitening/bleaching. I believe this applies to the splashless formulas. Check the product label.

I think only Clorox regular is certified for disinfection.

Rats! No wonder my socks were looking so dingy. I am clumsy and known to have splashed all over myself. I guess I'll go with the regular and transfer to a smaller, easier to handle container. I hope the dinginess is reversible. Tips?

I agree with everybody. You have to read the labels. I used to use the fragrant ones but if IIRC, they don't sanitize, and that's the only reason I use LCB. I use Walmart's Great Value that's labeled to kill germs.

Wanted to add that although some bleaches like the splashless may not be disinfecting they should still whiten.

The one I've been using def. doesn't whiten but I thought I was imagining things. The lack of smell was more evident than lack of whiteness. I have a small Clorox bottle (plastic). Couldn't I pour from the big bottle into this one for easier handling?

    Sure you can do that

I use the lemon bleach to mop my tile floors with (very diluted of course) , but I always keep a bottle of original Clorox on hand for disinfectant purposes. I buy the small bottles, for easy pour and because bleach expires relatively quickly if you don't use it up in a timely manner. The smell really bothers me nowadays though I can't be around it too long.

Didn't know this. Shelf life is one year after opening.

@bossyvossy, I believe the shelf life is six months. If i'm wrong, somebody please correct me.

I found this but can't swear by it.

The rate of breakdown increases rapidly when bleach is stored in extreme hot or freezing temperatures, or when a bottle is more than one year old. Generally, bleach stored at room temperature (~70°F) has a shelf life of one year, but after that point it should be replaced.

Does that mean after one year it will not whiten or will not disinfect?

Can't say for sure. With just 2 of us it takes a while to get enough towels for a load. I always buy the small jug of LCB and I noticed the new bottle smelled stronger than the last. So it might not be as effective. IIRC overtime the bleach breaks down to salt so if it's out of date you'd washing with salt water?

Really? We use so little bleach it's likely that my bottle is more than 1 year old! In the past I've noticed that the bleach doesn't smell as strong. I guess I'm using salt water...

Went to WM to return two bottles of the splash less. When asked reason for return, I said it doesn't bleach like regular Clorox. The woman looks at me like I'm crazy and says: But it's Clorox! I think I won weird return of the day award, ha ha

    LMBO...Hahaha

I wished I'd thought of showing her this pic, which I had taken earlier for posting here

Did you ever figure this out. I noticed the same issue six or seven months ago. Starting to think it's something with me. Because this new smell I'm noticing other places all the time

You all need to buy ”Regular” bleach at the store. It doesn’t need to be Clorox. It can be a store brand. Just make sure it says “disinfects“... and lists somewhere on the bottle “sodium hypochlorite“ 5% or more.

For years, these manufacturers Kik, Clorox, Austins A1 have been silently diluting and diluting down the active ingredient (Sodium Hypochlorite) and pouring more and more water into the bottle with a mix of fragrance.

I have purchased clorax bleach all my life. It doesnt smell like Clorax bleach anymore. It smells like the cheap bleach now. Paying 4.50 for clorax and now it smells horrible. This truly sucks!

I always buy the store brand/ generic "Chlorine" Bleach.

If you are using Clorox for sanitizing purposes, please, make sure the label says something to effect of: Kills 99.9% of germs. If the label does not say this, it's not really Clorox as we all once knew it. It's more of a gimmick than anything. Too bad we have to bring our magnifying glasses with us to the store to make sure we are buying what we think we are. Sometimes I have to look pretty hard to make sure I'm getting the right thing.

Bleach doesn't smell like it used to smell before !!! Pepsi doesn't taste like Pepsi anymore!! I get this chemical metal smell and taste!!! I think it's due to covid!!! My sense of smell or taste are not the same!! I had covid about 6 months ago and it hasn't been the same since!!! It is so frustrating!!! And I also noticed the cilantro taste different!! The foods I once enjoyed taste disgusting!!!!

I've lost massive weight because of this!!! Please tell me I'm not the only one experiencing this!!!! 🤨🤨😡😡😡

Most of you people do not understand. The issue is that some of us want tood old fashioned regular CHLORINE BLEACH that smells like it did 20-30-40-50 + years ago EVEN if you get the regular Clorox or other plain chlorine bleaches that do not have tht smell that some of us want and miss of sodium hypochlorite. of course the newfangled ”splashless” kinds dont have the scent or disinfecting ability. they are horrible. BUT the issue is we want the old great smell of real BLEACH again. it is not in any of these :

Thank I thought it was me smell like urine

I’ve tried so many brands of bleach at this point, regular and concentrated - even going to Lowe’s buying outdoor bleach. None smell like bleach and none affect the color of cotton/linen fabrics. This is crazeee!

Greg, purchase pool chlorine and dilute it.

No clorox isn't the same. It don't even smell like clorox. I have several dogs in my house and clorox does not clean like it used to. Ever since the pandemic started it began to smell different and not clean as well as it did before the pandemic. I guess I will have to look around for another alternative. Annie

  • last year

    B. Annie caudil, which product(s) specifically are you using? Chlorine bleach products aren't all the same, including different versions of the same brand.

  • last year

Yes, ever since the pandemic the food, prod products, hospital and more have changed.

I am returning my bleach back to the store and filling out a dissatisfactory form.

I ironically, encountered the same thing. my so call bleach smells like pure water. its not whitening clothes or stained plastic wares or anything! It is very ineffective and worthless for the intended purpose. also the proctective seal was absent from the bottles.

i encourage that we return the product(s) and provide oral or written feedback. thanks for sharing, i though i was the only one.

Chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) begins deteriorating into water and salt immediately upon manufacture. Deterioration is accelerated with exposure to light which is why chlorine bleach years ago was sold in dark-colored (amber) glass bottles. So, yes, it will lose the distinctive chlorine odor and become ineffective. Shelf-life can be short as six months.

  • last year

    Has anyone priced bleach lately?

  • last year

I bought 16 oz. of WM for $1.27 on 7/1/2024.
