Living room rug and curtain help

last modified: 8 years ago

I'm currently working on my living room and it's quite empty now so I don't have a picture. New beige sofas are coming in this weekend.

Would this lovely blue rug match with these gold metallic printed curtains?

I don't have these sofas yet, but here is a picture I took from the furniture store: Bought them without the pillows. Got the beige couch and camel leather chair.

I basically need a rug, curtains, coffee table set. All I have now is blank off white walls and 2 silver lamps lol.

I really like your neutral sofa selection! I think that the rug will work, but I cannot see the curtains going with them at all.

Thanks! I definitely like the rug, yeah I was thinking the curtains don't go with it. There are so many curtains to choose from, it's so hard to find something.

I clicked on your like for the curtains. It said "brick" as the color. I didn't see any that are maroon.

sorry, meant to say "link", not "like".

Yeah, I'm leaning against not getting those curtains. Ugh starting over!

Was brick or maroon or another color what you are thinking to bring in as an accent color? I think the maroon ones shown are too much a different style than your rug/sofa selection and the color too heavy for both. Are you open to other accent colors? That blue in the rug is beautiful and I'll bet you could find something to pull more of it into your room via the draperies. How many windows to cover and how big are they? Do you need the drapes to function (close or black out the room) or just look pretty?

I think I'm open to any accent colors. If it's a blue rug, maybe ivory, cream, beige,or navy or gray. I'm really just aiming to get a rug with a lot of blue in it, and go from there, to at least have a starting point! I have two standard sized windows side by side and looking for drapes for decoration since I have horizontal blinds that work for privacy. Looking for unique, pretty curtains that will give the room a modern, yet zen feel.

Or something like this: blue cream rug, I like the design and blueness:

With these cream curtains: (supposedly they are slight shimmery and give lace appearance)

^ Those are both from wayfair too.

It really depends on what rug you settle on, but the first one you posted would work with any of these, I think.

and I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think orange would look wonderful with that rug:

I like like the initial rug you posted a lot. It's interesting with colors that feel welcoming. I really like the last 2 sets of drapes olychick posted. Either would look nice with your neutral furniture and that rug.

I really like the last two as well, and the initial rug does seem more warm and inviting. I was thinking if I get that one then it would brighten up the room. I like the cool colors too. @olychick do happen to know where those last two curtains are from?

Seems like blue similar to the rug or drapes with orange in them makes sense.

The colors of the first rug, according to Wayfair are -

    Q:
"What are the colors of the area rug?"

    A:
The colors of the rug are aqua, off-white, bright orange, amber and navy.

Anjalie from Wayfair on Dec 9, 2016

My suggestion would be to wait until you get your rug and the new furniture pieces in the room. The sheer lacy drapes (in my opinion) are much too light weight to be paired with your leather chair.

This rug at Overstock brings in the colors of your new furniture along with the blue that you want. https://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Safavieh-Hand-Woven-Heritage-Camel-Blue-Wool-Rug-8-x-10/13525392/product.html?refccid=3POU4MTYSZ43YMSM27GQ3FWSMU&searchidx=16

Or, the Pottery Barn Eva rug - This one is on eBay. $348 for 8 x 10

Oh true. Those two rugs do bring out the colors of the leather chair and beige! Only thing is my budget for a rug is $160 or less, I might check overstock.

Thats a good point to look into getting a rug first. I was trying to get some ideas for curtains in advance so I won't be super stressed once they arrive but yeah I'll try to make up my mind when the rug I end up getting comes in!

This one below is $169.99 for a 5'3 x 7'6. It's very rich looking and has your colors. That's navy in the border.

Carolina Weavers Celebration Collection Bursa Tan Area Rug (5'3 x 7'6)

Or if you want something lighter in color, THIS ONE

is only $125.92 for a (5' 3"X7' 10") American Rug Old Cascade Heights Eden Place Tan Large Area Rug. This one would open up a world of colors for you.

That's second one looks so nice and would give me more options for accents! And the price is sweet. I'm thinking about that one. Good size too, 5x7 or 5x8 is what I'm looking for. Maybe sky blue or burnt orange curtains would look nice with that one that aren't too intricate or flashy in design

I love the last one my3dogs posted--that's amazing! It's got great color, interesting pattern, and fits your budget!

    last modified: 8 years ago

Okay, so for the rug my3dogs posted, how about one of these curtains? Of course i'd buy them after the rug comes in to make sure of the rug color. Open to more suggestions for anything really!

I think it's a matter of personal preference, but I like the last coppery ones the best with the rug. I think because the rug is so busy and the pattern so geometric that the others "clash" in my opinion. Either the style or the patterns don't seem complementary to the rug. The rug seems very contemporary to me, so I would look for a similar look in your draperies - something without such a strong pattern. Some patterns could work with the rug, but it's really tricky to pull off well.

I would not pick a strongly patterned curtain with a rug that has a strong pattern and different colors. I would pick tone on tone curtains or one with no pattern that picks up one of the colors of the rug. With neutral furniture if the curtains are bright that's all you'll see in that room. It takes a great decorator to be able to pull that off, while a solid curtain that is close to the color of the walls, with perhaps a very muted pattern, will always look elegant. Busy curtains in the average home will often look tacky and make for a choppy design that doesn't flow.

That's a good point, i agree with you guys that too much pattern in the rug and curtains will look off, maybe I should look into neutral colors. Or how about the last bold orange curtains. I do agree with @olychick that they look good ou of the others. They are modern and pick up a color from the rug, but maybe the color is too bold?

I like your original/first rug with the 3rd pic of drapes that Oly posted.

Careful of rug size -- 5x8 is likely too small for a typically sized living room.

True, the first rug does look pretty nice. Living room is pretty small so gotta likely go with 5X8!

    last modified: 8 years ago

Okay. So I'm between the first rug I originally posted or this one:

same teal/cream/navy blue rug as above but in different light
    Or this one

And these curtains which also come in taupe and white:

Any thoughts of how to mix and match, which curtain would go best with which rug!

I'm also wondering if the 1st image (teal/cream/navy rug) would go with navy curtains posted here.

are you asking about the very first rug in this thread, or the first rug in your last post?

It's hard to judge the teal navy rug really will be but I think it would certainly go with the navy curtains, not sure about the last curtains posted (very hard to read the blueness in both the curtain and the rug). I do like the teal navy rug but the colors are so hard to gage. Although I very much like the 2nd rug you just posted for the different colors in it (and I love navy) I think you are better with the other rugs. I still like the original one you first posted as well as the multicolored geometric one American Eden that my3dogs posted as it has so many colors but is relatively muted. I think the navy curtains you posted would go with both-- (at least on my monitor it looks like a tone on tone with some pattern but not crazy.).

    last modified: 8 years ago

@olychick, the first rug in the last photo.

So after a lot of thought, I'm going with the the geometric muted, multicolored rug that my3dogs posted. It's cute and muted and will give me lots of options for accents and curtains!

With this rug, and the neutral furniture. I'm now deciding on a coffee table set, budget is $280. I was thinking maybe a light coffee table set will go with the beige furniture and light colors in the rug?

    Any thoughts?

    Or maybe this one

    last modified: 8 years ago

I definitely see your point! I usually opt to choose different coffee tables from the end tables too. My only thing is, I've been trying to look but it seems buying everything separately is so expensive! One end table alone, I'm seeing can cost up to $170-$200. So if I get two, that's over $300, on top of buying a coffee table. That's where my struggle is, with everything averaging over $500.

I'm thinking anything but glass since i've had bad experiences in the past and hard to clean!

    last modified: 8 years ago

I may have found some options.

Maybe something like this for end tables

But I have no idea what kind of nonglass coffee table would go with those!

I'm glad you'really getting the herringbone pattern rug. It probably is more expensive to get individual pieces rather than sets, but you don't need it all at once. Get the table in, and get used to the colors. The round rust colored end table is intrigueing, but only if you have a coffee table that really blends with the couch or chair.

    last modified: 8 years ago

That's a good point. I really did need the rug first so least that is picked out. I think the curtains may end up being the last thing I get. So i guess I should focus on either end tables or a coffee table, whichever one I find first and go from there.

Would gold end tables go with silver lamps?

Also another good point. Yeah I would get a coffee table that goes with the couch or chair.

Love that herringbone rug and with it the last 2 sets of curtains blue or copper, I like the blue since you will have browns in the furniture. If I have to pick from the table selection it would be the last set with the oval and dark legs but I think there's better options out there.

    last modified: 8 years ago

Thanks for the suggestions! I really also agree that the rug I chose would go well with one of those those last set of blue curtains. Those coffee table sets are really cute! I really like the rustic dark brown round 2nd to last set. They would be cheaper than buying pieces separately, but I'm not totally sure if I should just get the coffee table first and different style end tables or just go with a complete set!

    last modified: 8 years ago

OK, so unfortunately it didn't work out with the herringbone, multicolored patterned rug! I was just about to buy it this morning, then I saw it's sold out.

So i've been looking for other rugs but had so much trouble finding something that would look tie in the colors of the furniture and now I dislike the the original one I posted, too vibrant/cheerful

How about this one? It has pretty muted colors and it looks like it has colors pulled from the couch and chair. Colors found in this rug include: Cream/Beige/Blue/Brown/Burgundy/Gold/Light Blue/Orange

    https://www.wayfair.com/Astoria-Grand-Nathanson-Cream-Area-Rug-ASTG4314-ASTG4314.html#&gid=null&pid=1

And i'm thinking even though it's set, to go with the one @ravencajun Zone 8b TX mentioned, it's so cute and I like that it's industrial/modern:

I am not sure what this is- but I did a google search for the rug you liked (and everyone seemed to ) and it comes up as available through HOUZZ? It is slightly more than the ebay offering.https://www.houzz.com/products/eden-place-tan-rug-53x710-prvw-vr~54718413[geometric EDEN rug through houzz?[(https://www.houzz.com/products/eden-place-tan-rug-53x710-prvw-vr~54718413)

Oh wow thanks!! I tried googling it but nothing came up! It is a little more. Hmm, I guess, now I'm deciding between that one or the one I just lastly posted, which is about $20 less. I'm wondering which would go better with furniture.

    last modified: 8 years ago

honestly I think they both would go nicely. The only thing with the newer one you just posted, I wold be a little afraid of the big light open area (to show dirt only no other reason). Wanted to add that there are good shoppers on here- maybe someone else can find a coupon or promotion code for you.

    last modified: 8 years ago

The newer one above is more traditional, and I'm not sure whether this might not be a different tone of beige than your furniture. I can see the furniture set that you like above as going better with the more modern vibes of the herringbone rug. In a little while you won't care about the difference in price and you'll have a rug that looks good with everything and will make it easy to choose drapes and accessories.

    The herringbone 100%!!!

    last modified: 8 years ago

Okay I finally did it! Went with the herringbone rug, $168 but that's okay. As everyone said, it's more modern and provide more options for accents!

And I went with the dark brown, round industrial coffee table set, the last set posted.

Hopefully it'll all turn out okay.

Yay!! i think you're going to have a great room.:) Enjoy!!!

    last modified: 8 years ago

I think you made some great choices. If you decide somewhere down the line that you don't care for having a "set" of tables, I'd bet you could sell the end tables or the coffee table for a decent price and look for something to coordinate but not match.

    last modified: 8 years ago

That's a great idea @Olychick. I kind of needed everything quickly as I have guests over soon, so I didn't have time to search for independent pieces. But I just bought that set for $180, so i thought it was a steal and yes, I can look into trading in the table in the future if I get tired of having a set!
