Would curtains/drapes be necessary on the east wall of dining room?

I'm working on dining room decor, and wondering if I should have curtains on the windows facing east. I have ordered curtains for the French doors - this faces due South and while the roofline prevents direct sunlight in the heat of summer, I will get sunlight in winter months. Not a bad thing, but sometimes one doesn't want the glare. The east side does not require drapes - enough trees provide a dappled ambiance. Where I am located there are no privacy concerns. The bears and the deer can look in all they want!

These are the drapes I ordered for the french doors:

I plan to hang them to drape one inch from the ground - I don't want them collecting cat hairs or encouraging cat games.

So anyhow, SHOULD I purchase curtains for the east window, too, and could I purchase them to hang up higher, more in tune with the window? I purchased 84", I believe the shorter option is 72". I would prefer not to purchase them at all for that window.

That east wall will have room for a wine cooler and a 15" wide book case between that window and the corner for the door. To the left of the window will be the sideboard. I am going to build a narrow stand with scratching posts for the cats so they can look out the window and preferably not go after the logs... (The stand will be removed when I have formal guests over.) There will probably never be a need to close the drapes there.

Thoughts?

The table is informal, mid-toned wood base, with laminated wood top. 35" x 86 or 90". Nothing fancy and may be replaced in several years. The floor is wide plank pine, to be stained a medium dark color., but not too dark.

PS, considering buying this for the overhead lights:

Sounds like you already made up your mind, but I think panels on doors and nothing on the window will look unfinished. Won't look quite right. You could put a matching valance on the window or just leave the panels stationary at the sides. They don't have to close.

They should both be long to the floor and the rod mounted at the same place, if you decide to hang panels.

1" off the floor is too short. 1/2" would be better. ETA, I prefer them to break or no shorter than 1/4" off the floor, but at least no shorter than 1/2". You can vacuum the bottoms.

Just a note, but grommets are somewhat contemporary. Not sure they work well with the log cabin walls.

Curtains should just break in floor, cats or no cats. They'll look skimpy and awful otherwise.

I love the drapes you picked, but I think the color will disappear into the wood walls. I'd go with a lighter color.

Thanks everyone. I'll be ordering drapes of the 84" length for the other window. As noted, they'll remain open. And I'll do the 1/4" floor gap - it may depend on how the fasteners fit to the logs the exact amount, since I really do NOT want them dragging in any way, shape or form. (If worse comes to worse, the GC could likely size in some pine to connect to. We'll discuss when next I am up.)

Some of this concern came about because while discussing curtains with some friends who live about 5 miles away up there who have NO curtains whatsoever (and, like me, live far off the road, but unlike me, don't have direct south sun), they didn't see any reason for me to get any more curtains than absolutely essential... I wasn't sure, so that's why I brought this here to GW!

As for the color - the drapes are more vibrant and rust-toned in person, and the logs are lighter in person than shown above - and less yellow than in the first photo. I'll find out for sure next time I am up there, just after the First. I'll bring the drapes I did just order with me, to verify, and hold off on ordering the matching ones until I check.

I'm fine with the grommets. They'll match better than the flat screen TV that will be in the living area of the house, despite that item only going to be a max of 42 inches...

I tend to agree with your friends........if no privacy concerns, I'd go with as few curtains as I could possibly manage. But then I do not like curtains and haven't had any in any residence I lived in for at least 30 years!! Shades for privacy when necessary but curtains - no way!!

If that was my place, I'd definitely skip any window covering on the east windows and rather than curtains of the south facing french doors, I'd opt for some sort of very light screen that would be virtually invisible when not in use but would block the glare as necessary. Something like these but without the decorative valence - keep it simple to go with the rustic character!!

I like the drapes. The round form matches the logs, and the vertical drape provides a good contrast to the horizontality (is that even a word?) of the logs.

I like those drapes too, and like the fact that they blend in with the wood. Even without privacy concerns, I'd still want to be able to have the option of "closing out the world" and making it all cozy inside, particularly on a cold, dark night.

Thanks again... I'll be up at my build on Wednesday with the current drapes, and will order as appropriate when I get back here. Ida Clare, we do get those cold dark nights...

    "Horizontality" - I guess it's a word now!!!

Love your light, would you mind sharing who makes it?

If I were not going to dress the east window then I would go with the mini blinds that adhere to the glass panels on the French Doors..there could be built in or applied on top. They would cut down the glare but give you a cohesive look. Either neither or both is my thought where curtain panels are concerned.

Thanks. I think I am going to go with the panels on both spots - I will be up at my build on Thursday and will verify that the drapes I chose for the doors will be the right color (the old-fashioned "hold things together" method, grin), before ordering the east window ones.

BTW... the rust toned Stradivari drapes are too matchy-matchy to the walls. I am considering ordering in the seafoam color - these are the same pattern and style, but an off white with just a hint of sea green. I am also looking at my3dogs' curtains, above.

cmarlin was correct about the color originally chosen. Thanks, and ditched!
