Is this painting too small for over the sofa?

I have looking for the perfect piece of art to put over the sofa, and
I've fallen in love with this painting. But, I worry that it's too
small!

I wanted a large piece of art to create a strong focal point on
this wall, but I can't help but feel that this canvas is too small and looks "off".

The painting is 48" by 33". The sofa is 110" long and the bookcases are
108" long.
Should I keep looking for another art piece? (Excuse the plastic still wrapped around the painting). Thanks for your help!

I love it, especially the way it's flanked on both sides by the lamp and plant.

IMHO I feel the size is right but perhaps the content/color is off for the room. I just feel like it doesn't do the room any favors.

    Will it be framed?

I think it may be hung a tad high.

Also, if you do keep it, I would find an objet, throw or pillows that pick up the blue.

I like the painting fine. I agree it's hung a bit high. It also needs a more visible frame (is there a frame? I can't tell in the picture), and your room needs a bit more color. The painting is the only thing with color in the room, though your room is very nice.

Hi, I agree with Sueb20, it should be framed. A black frame would help tie it in with the room. I think it's the right size, a frame will beef it up. I agree also with chijim, some pillows and throws incorporating the colors in the painting will help tie everything together. Good luck!

I think it looks fine size wise for the space because of the way you've filled in the space around it with the plant and lamp. I'd lower it a tad and relocate the tiny decor below it.

I don't think it would do the painting any favors to frame it with a dark frame....it looks like it could already (maybe?) have a light frame, but I think it looks great on the wall, as is. I agree to bringing a bit more of those colors into your room. That footstool would look great covered in a coordinating fabric.

I agree that it's too high and could use a darker frame. The size only works if you continue to have the art flanked with large objects like you have now. Not sure you need to 'tie' the art in with your existing colors. There's something interesting about it being the only real color in a neutral room.

I really like it & think you have your bookshelf styled wonderfully

I love it. Lower it about 4-6 inches

Thank you, everyone, for your help! I'm going to try to lower it and see if that helps. It's a stretched canvas painting so I wasn't going to frame it, but I really like the suggestions about bringing in some colors from the painting. Thanks!

It is moved down a little; surrounding it with something darker than the art and wall will help frame the edges (the white of the art blends into the wall). I find the proportions of the lamp a little unusual and think the lamp, plant and the floor lamp need a little variation in height or size. Good luck! ...ETA you might not have to frame it, perhaps if its mounted on a board; a little unusual but there's probably samples of that out in the internet....

I have several large paintings on stretched canvas and I think they look just fine unframed. However, on a couple of them I did paint the sides of the canvas a darker color and that adds just a little "pop" of trim that sort of mimics the look of a low-profile, contemporary frame.

I would remove the smaller items on the bookcase. They distract from the painting which is the star in the room.l

My first thought was I'd drop it a few inches so it looks more anchored to the tables vs. floating. I think it looks nice not framed, but would also look nice framed. With all the items around it, which I like, I think I prefer it without. The presence of a frame in a color visually adds another item. Just something to think about. I also think it would look nice to sprinkle more of those blues around the room.

Truth is I thought it looked so good in your photo that it was a stock photo where you had seen the painting! So I think it looks great and you have a beautiful setting for it. I guess I do agree that the tweaking that other posters have suggested was the right thing but overall it looks great.

I also think it looks great as is.

With the other objects below, I would say no it looks just fine.

I think it looks fine as it is, too.

I took another look at your photo on my desktop computer and have changed my mind about a darker frame. Looks perfect as it is. The only thing I would do is to add another curtain panel at the end of the window.

I would further suggest finding a piece of sculpture, vases, vase/jar filled w/branches, faux plant or like, to use in place of the plant on the right as an alternative if the plant doesn't flourish,

Here's an idea if you want add some other art around your picture to make it more so

Even though modern is not my style, I think your room looks wonderful, although I very much agree about adding another curtain panel. I personally wouldn't add any more blue to the room; the monochromatic look is very chic, with the painting being a dramatic counterpoint. I'm not 100% certain that the painting should be lowered. I wouldn't frame it; that would dilute the modern vibe you have going.

The only issue I see is that with a white wall and the white canvass, the painting gets a bit lost on the wall. I'd either paint the wall or frame the painting. I know it isn't ideal, but I think that would help define the painting and make it look more like it belongs there. Some of the message of the painting is lost when it just fades into the wall. Even if you just somehow put a black piece of laminate or something behind it on the wall. You might want to consider painting the walls (I know, this was probably not on your mind when you posted this) but it would make some of the other elements in the room not look so washed out too, like the lampshades. I wouldn't paint it any type of color, just something light grey enough to contrast. But I think it might look cool to just have a black board on the wall behind the painting.

I think if you love the painting, it does work. If you're wanting a dramatic focal point that oversized art gives, like the room chijim posted, then I would keep looking. It just depends on what look you're really wanting.

I think what Mtnrd said is exactly right -- a frame closes in the movement of the painting. I think it looks great, I'd just lower it a bit. Really nice room.

It looks to me like the painting is at eye level, which is where it should be, so I certainly would not lower it. I would try changing the plant for one less tall and more full, cascading.
