Chandelier over a baby grand piano?

I have a large living room in a colonial farm house, which measures 23x20 with 9 foot ceilings. The room will hold an inherited baby grand piano in the place where the previous owners had a dining table and really pretty crazy double headed eagle brass chandelier. I love brass, but this is some ugly brass.

Should I replace the light with a new more farm-house-y chandelier, or should I just swap it out and make it a recessed light? Is it weird to have a chandelier over a grand piano? Would the scale even work? I'm considering the Ballard Designs Lourdes 12 light chandelier (http://www.ballarddesigns.com/lourdes-12-light-chandelier/214725).

@ my3dogs, esp. like this one.

Yeah, I had already done a Google image search. It's hard to get a sense of scale though. It seems like the ceilings in those photos are generally 10' or taller.

I like that one best too, mdln. Our floors are wide plank white oak, and the walls are painted BM White Blush with Snowfall White trim and crown. The room has windows similar in scale to the room above, but the ceilings in this room seem taller than what I have. I'd worry that the chandelier I'm considering would look odd hung on a short chain because it's quite tall itself.

Type into Google low to ceiling or low ceiling chandeliers. There are some lovely one available.

You may need to look for a shorter one that in your first post, as the dimensions are - Overall: 31 3/4"H X 28 1/2" Diameter, Chain: 6'L. Even without any chain, that one would be hanging so the bottom of it is only approx. 6'2" above the floor, including the ceiling canopy.

In the pictures, I like the chandelier hung lower, closer to the piano. Even in the kitty pic above, I would hang it a bit lower.

Suggest buying it from a place with a good exchange/return policy.

May want to find a balloon (party store) the size of the fixture, and hang it with string taped to ceiling over your piano to help with decision.

If the ceilings are 108" and the piano is 39" tall when closed, and the light is about 32", so there would be almost another 39" to play with. Could it possibly work? I like the style a lot and can get it for an excellent price. I don't want it too look oversized though, but I'm also worried about a chandelier appearing too diminutive for the room. The chandelier should probably still be 30" above the piano just like with a dining table, so the chain would be roughly 9".

Of course a chandelier..what recessed light over the piano? that's a missing opportunity to me!! (I don't play. i do sing..to myself lol)

But. This chandelier you're looking at is way too big by itself, even without a chain. It will be proportional to the room in terms of diameter, yet it will still overwhelm it being that long. even given the fact that 108' ceiling height is actually pretty great height. It just was made to be hung in the room with the higher ceilings.

It will technically work maybe-but I don't think it will look gracious enough. The suggestion to mock it, given earlier-is an excellent suggestion though.

    I'd go with a chandelier-but a different design one. A shorter one

Will the piano stand in the middle of the room? in the corner? somewhere in between? it'd influence my decision too.

Thank you April. That's really what I needed to hear. I kind of knew it, but wanted it to work anyway. I wish I could use the light elsewhere, like at the top of my stairs, but it's just not big enough up there.

I'm attaching a photo of the room before from the real estate listings, and then the current disaster state the room is in. The floors will be installed in that room by end of month. We had issues that delayed their installation until now.

    BEFORE:

    Wow, right?!

    DURING:

So the piano will go where the previous owners had the dining table. We're going in a very different direction with the house. I can dig up some of my inspiration photos to see if any contain chandeliers. My initial plan was to paint that brass one pale blue and hang it in the upstairs landing. Not sure it would work though because it's not willowy and rustic in the way I would want.

Huh. A double headed eagle seems more retro German empire than 1976. Can you unscrew that bit? it looks like a nice fixture otherwise!

Anyway, use the old one as a model--it looks like it was a good size for the space.

Here are some inspiration photos. I've been mostly pinning other rooms in the house since flooring installation pushed this living room to the back burner. I'm including a blue painted brass chandelier, too.

I'm not sure if the eagle but can be removed. What do you think about this detail though? It reminds me of fois gras geese being force fed by tubes.

So we're going more traditional/bohemian/farmhouse, if that's the right description. I don't like the chandeliers in the photos below though.

If you really like it, I would at least order and try it.

Had to purchase light fixtures for entire home rebuild. Some I thought would be the "exact right size," some "a little small," and some "maybe too big." I am most happy with the "maybe too big" fixtures.

    mayhemingway thanked mdln

Barfing geese? or dolphins!? That's one odd fixture--the elements don't quite belong together. But apparently it's a thing!!

Google images for: flemish chandelier eagle brass.

namarie, of course you can have chandelier over the piano, and 9 feet is perfectly nice ceiling height..and yours looks great-exactly because it's sized AND shaped right, it goes horizontally so to say..expanding to the sides..exactly what I mean-big diameter, but less height.

softpunk i love quirky but this eagle puzzles even me lol.

i confess i tried to do a search..keeping in mind that you-as I've guessed, maybe right maybe not- love simple look, candles, openness, round elements, and quality of execution..meaning it should look elegant enough regardless the style, right? not too visually heavy too

    so before i continue-i thought t i'd rather ask... what's your budget?

I live in California, where we have earthquakes. I think the chandelier is lovely, but would never put it over a piano. A lot of other states are having Earthquakes too. Maybe you can hire someone who can attached it in a safe way.

Let's pretend that your Flemish chandelier is worth this much. Very similar, no?

    http://gofrenchantiques.com/item/brass-flemish-chandelier/

yep..definitely very similar..makes one warm up to eagle a lot..)) actually if the eagle didn't have so many military connotations..to me I mean..I'd love having a bird. i have them everywhere. let's see..painting, ceramics, curtains...including lamps and even one chandelier..lol

(I have other fauna too..in abundance..))

but you need to love that eagle. a creature should be loved. I think. even if it's just a metal part of something. if you don't-then find somebody who loves it. either for that discounted price lol or just as a gift

Ha, Voila I too have googled it and this is another reason I have paused before hitting it with blue spray paint. That said, I don't think it's worth that. I don't think it's that old and it certainly lacks that beautiful patina so I'm fairly certain it must be lacquered. But it's probably worth taking it to the antique district to get a price for it.

Cacocobird, I live on the Cascadian fault line and have sort of resigned myself to a very high probability of certain death in the event that we get "the big one" in my life time. I feel like I will have much bigger problems to deal with than worry about a falling chandelier. I had never even considered chandeliers problematic. We don't really get little earthquakes here but we live in the fear of a 9 or greater levelling us in the next 1-150 years.

April, yes! I wish I could say I could justify spending $1-3k on a dream chandelier by Thomas O'Brien for Visual Comfort, but that's not my reality. I generally scour Craigslist, EBay, and thrift or wait for sales for very good deals. I like the hunt.

I'm buying the Pottery Barn Armonk light for our second floor landing off a guy on CL tomorrow.

    The Dream:

Somewhat more attainable and a better scale:

More attainable still, but don't love it entirely because I worry the wood finish will look cheap among other things:

..went to count the birds. one can think i'm bird-insane..

    that's a dangerous thread. lol

    last modified: 9 years ago

I love eagles. But the eagles on this chandelier are militaristic and not my style. It's just a very weird chandelier.

Let me know if you start that thread because I might give you some competition.

aha. so you're like me, softpunk, in that respect

i was a bit hesitant to tell you that i went to look at Etsy and Chairish websites first thing first..

I did find one on Chairish (i found many but alas they are usually long too..this one has the right size )but looking at your inspiration-it's too ornate..you prefer cleaner lines

wooden parts sometimes look very cool. not cheap at all. but then again might be too ornate..or if not it's more mid century modern look which i also love dearly, but that's not what you're looking for

    still, check these sites.

the one i found is 675..which is quite a lot too. but they have pages and pages of chandeliers

(i love eagles too. in general. lol)

$675 USD = $885 Canadian PLUS customs fees and taxes and international shipping. Not living in the lower 48 is a drag when online shopping.

I'm okay with more ornate and mid century depending on the piece. There's a brass Moravian star over our dining table.

Heeheehee. It's starting to grow on me! It went nicely with the PO's stuff. But it's so weird...and it's no less weird for having brethren out there.

Hey, for reference how wide do you think would be appropriate for a room that size? The 2 black chandeliers I posted above are 42' and 49" in diameter, and that seems way too big. I think I'll need to get the piano and furniture in place before buying the chandelier.

If it helps at all, the chandelier over our piano which I showed above is 42 inches wide. And we have a fairly small baby grand.

Seems the chandy has replaced the LARGE candelabra!! I am amazed at the many styles of homes represented and how perfect the pianos go with them all!!!

April I thought of this when you said bird insane....

LOL. i've never watched Portlandia yet

most of my my birds are much sillier though..

    here's one for example:

    sorry for the off topic..))

I found 2 more chandeliers that would be perfect except for the price tag. Who can suggest the perfect Look For Less?!

April, is that bird with feet a flute?

well it does have some opening in its tail..so i guess technically it is))

i also have an owl that is a flute

getting back to chandeliers-from my experience, vintage gives you best quality for the price. just hunting..what can I tell you

if I see something-I'll definitely post it for you

..ok..so as far as i understand this one is sold? but since it's handmade they can repeat it for you..maybe alter a bit too...

that one really depends on how it feels in RL..can be a hit or a huge miss. a bit different concept too-it's a round cage but not exactly.

a bit too small..and non-returnable. still, i thought i might as well post this one

on the other hand, they're having 20% off everything..Gilt I mean

i obviously restricted myself in price everywhere. otherwise..there are 80 or so pages of lighting there. similar with OKL..that, on the opposite, started having better return policy, and is doing much better than Gilt. I still remember their early days..))

    Thank you April!

The Feiss chandeliers are really well priced and are probably the front runners are this point considering the price point and size.

I did just win a pair of Visual Comfort Vendome sconces in bronze from EBTH for a steal. So the mantle and LED lights are sorted, and now to figure out this chandelier situation... Not to mention our extreme lack of furniture. :)

wow. congrats! right..how could I forget EBTH?

I can get this one for $300 USD, but when you factor in exchange rate, import fees, and shipping, the total comes to nearly $500 CND. That's not nothing. Do you think it's worth it? Is it the right size and style in white?

    https://www.onekingslane.com/p/4196848-palmira-6-light-chandelier-chalk-washed?cat=287

With these sconces on the other side of the room over the mantle.

softpunk that's for you to decide..the size seems right the style seems right and it will work with the sconces..but my opinion is not to buy if you feel you settle..and yes to buy if it touches you in a special way

as for the money..changing three countries, with some back and forth in the middle, taught me to try not to convert the currency..as absurd as it sounds)) like, convert it of course, and it does come automatically in the beginning, but then you plainly stop doing that. it's rarely a pleasant surprise..unless you go to Nicaragua..))

I was about to buy it but wanted to read some reviews first. Thank god I did, because it turns out that chandelier is actually an island pendant and isn't round at all, but long and narrow. So the Feiss chandelier is OUT. https://www.houzz.com/products/feiss-f3000-6chkw-bw-hartsville-chalk-beachwood-6-light-chandelier-prvw-vr~28376734

even though i still managed to get a mirror-both deceiving pics and raving reviews..))
