Living Room: Furniture placement and rug size

We moved into a new home a couple months ago and I'm stuck in the living room. The room is 22x18. Should I use a larger rug and pull the furniture out using more of the space or should I keep it pulled in for a cozier feel? The rug in pictures is 8x10. Thoughts?
I have moved the furniture many times, not apposed to shifting furniture around again.
You guys have helped me in the past, thanks!

This is what the room looked like when I had a large rug, it was time to replace, the corners were getting ragged. So I decided I wanted a smaller rug. So this has begun this process.

Also wanted to show what I've tried:
I really wanted to try and find a rug locally but I don't thing that is going to happen.

The new rug is too small. Go for the size between the new and old. Also I'm not liking the placement of the sets of chairs. I liked the sofa better against the wall.

Oooh, the old layout is much better! And I like the wood coffee table better than the glass-it really warms up the room. Yes, I think you need a larger rug than the one you have now. You can pull the furniture closer together to where it feels "right". Beautiful room though!

I think it's definitely the rug size that is throwing me.

A larger rug for sure. Draw the furniture closer to the FP in winter and spread it out more in summer.

Some of the problem lies in the fact that you only have one rug. I'd place a rectangular rug in the bookcase area, too. (Just make sure the rugs are different from each other.)

I think there are too many large chairs in the room. I would like a printed rug since everything is quiet. Not a big print but something more subtle. I like the sofa facing the fireplace since that is the rooms focal point. The artwork above fireplace either needs a dark frame or another home. It disappears there against the light brick. Have you tried placing the dark cabinet on the wall behind the sofa? Then you could put two chairs and a table on that wall. I think the white bookcase and glass coffee table dont work. I would remove them. Get the main furniture placed properly then we can deal with tabkes and wall hangings.

When it come to rug size, should I do 10x14 or 9x12?

Shifted furniture a little per suggestions, thoughts? The room seems huge again.

I like the tall piece on left wall. I like darker framed art on mantel. I miss the sofa table. The chairs look like soldiers guarding the fireplace. Try angling them and pull away from fireplace a little.

You need a larger rectangular coffee table and a small round table for each chair so the person has a place to set a drink. Of course you still need a bit larger rug.

Measure space from 12" under front legs of sofa to chairs. Then across front of sofa and add 12". See what that gives you.

From couch to chairs as you describe is 9'

Across front of couch is 7' plus 1' total 8'

So a 10' x 8' might work. What is the size of the one in the last picture?

Thank you for your help Flo. Sorry I worked today, the rug now is 8x10. I'm feeling that the rug needs to be larger than this, if not when all the furniture is pulled in it leaves a lot of open space and looks bare.

I think you are right. I wanted to say 9 x 12, but hard to tell from just photos. I would go for the 9 x 12. You are very welcome!
