How to aesthetically connect two houses put together

I live in a home that is two parts. 1/2 was built in the mid 1700's exterior is smooth stucco over brick and the other 1/2 exterior is wood siding, added in mid 1800's. We are about to put in a new roof, windows, and siding for the sided part. My husband refuses to get both houses sided to look cohesive. He is afraid of nailing into the masonry and causing damage.

How do I make it look like one house without using the same exterior? Do I accentuate the difference as a design element? Roof will be charcoal gray, siding with be medium gray and shutters black, trim white and red doors.

We are also working with a really tight budget.
