Will caulk hold my tub door or must I drill into the tub?

The bathtub door I want says you have to drill the base into the tub. My installer said drilling will crack my enamel-covered cast iron tub. The glass doors are 5/16" thick. Some reviewers who have purchased this tub (as well as OTHERS with heavier 3/8" glass) say that they did not drill into the tub, but just used silicone caulk to hold it into place, and everything works fine.

Can I go ahead and install the more updated door with just silicone caulk?
