Hybrid Kitchen Island/Table - yay or nay?

In our little home, we're looking at doing a major kitchen renovation. The initial design idea is to combine our kitchen and dining room with an island in the middle. This eliminates the space for a dining room table, but adds a ton of storage, work space and really opens up the whole living area of the house. However, I am someone who likes to sit at a table and eat dinner, not at an island. We challenged our designer to make a space that could seat at least 4 and possibly expand to fit even more - it's quite the challenge for our space, but she's great. My question for you is does anyone have a island that doubles as your kitchen table? What are the pros and cons? Keep in mind, not doing this puts our kitchen back into an awkward 80 sq ft space.
