Faux Ceiling Beams

Our house is being built and I've always dreamed of ceiling beams. Ours will NOT be functional, strictly aesthetic. My question(s) is this...our family room (20x20) flows right into the kitchen. Do you continue the beams into the kitchen (there is NO "entryway" or frame around the kitchen, truly one big room) or just have them in the family room space? We will have (3) transom windows on the kitchen wall. We will have 12 foot ceilings. Our style is beach cottage/craftsman. Will have ceramic tile wood look flooring in weathered gray. Question #2 do we do the beams in white or gray or a true "wood" color? Love this forum, thanks for your opinion!

If there is no transition between the family room and the kitchen, how would you end the beams? Or do they run the other direction? Wood beams are meant to approximate a structural element. So if you have two adjacent rooms, one with beams and one without, I would expect the ceiling to be lower in the beam-less room. This might be done to accommodate HVAC.

There is a lot of difference between rustic looking S wood beams and trimmed out painted white beams. I don't really think of the latter as "beams," more like 50% of a coffered ceiling. I love both. Anyway, I think you need to post more info and photos.

Thanks for your reply. No, there is no transition between family room & kitchen, other than the large island. Unfortunately I don't have pics, as the house is just being built. I can upload the floor plan from the builder showing the schematic. (don't have with me right now) I agree, I've seen the white "beams" that look like a half coffer. I'll upload plans as soon as I can.
