Bob; If I understand this right' you planted a kumquat seed and it grew. You then grafted a shiranui scion to the seedling kumquat tree. Your shiranui is growing on kumquat roots. The tree in your pot is incredibly large for a seed grown kumquat tree of 2 years. My big question is how did you get that tree to grow so well. If I can grow kumquat trees with that speed in a container I am going back to container growing and grow something else in my greenhouse.
Poncius, a few years not two, a ques i would say not more than 4 years. Yes that is correct, as you can see the tree was pruned and the sion is now the central leader. I don't overfertilize my tree's and more important i don't overwater too soon. I would let the tree dry-out somewhat before watering again. From what i read a lot of members are letting the tree's fruit too soon.
I let my tree's grow first, i have other fruits to fall back on, rasberries, plums, pears, nectarines, persimmon's, paw-paw's, atemoya, jabo, you name it.
Steve, i cut down the Shiranui of because i could not make it fit going through the garage door. This kumquat is bigger than the tree i got the seeds of. It barely fit now.
I ordered a tree from Harris a few years back it died during shipment in late fall and it died during shipment, they replaced it the following spring. It is kept at 5 feet. The rootstock of the dead tree regrew and i grafted a xi-shan. As you can see that kumquat tree has been pruned more than once.
While i am on this subject i may add that the grafts i did, the first week in February, mostly mandarins are showing growth, i do believe they all took, so my greenroom works, they are out of the shop, mid 60's for a few days. I did about 20 sofar, this week i will get some pomelo cuttins, i hope. Also grafted 6 new varieties of figs.
