I think I saw a northern harrier

Driving home from grocery shopping on a country road, I started to see a large bird flying. I hadn't seen it before. It was in the distance, but looked light on the bottom and had light wings with black on the tips. I looked it up and saw an image of a male harrier that looked like it. It floated up and down, across the fields. I read that males can sometimes give a mating call that sounds like a gull. I heard what I thought was a killdeer, but couldn't see one. Have any of you ever heard this call? Would it sound like a killdeer? I hope I see one again. It was the first time for me.

Sounds like that is what you saw, I have seen them many times.

Thanks Embothrium. Where are you located? We've lived here in central Indiana for 35 years, and this is the first I saw one. Just a couple weeks ago, we saw a bald eagle here for the first time too.

Washington State. But I have traveled throughout much of the West, where it seems this bird can be seen following ditches and streams just about anywhere.

Cool! I don't think they're that common in this area. I wish they were, for sure!
