Laurie, do you know what lowest winter temps were in the green house? The roses would not need pruned unless the canes have winter damage or areas of canker. From my perspective only it looks as thou a few canes from first photo still need pruned. When pruning any canes check to see if the inside of the cane is white. If it is brown or brownish it will die off later anyway.

I cut off the black, brown bits, but there wasn't much. My Blue Moon is starting to put out a lot of new growth at the top of the canes. I'd rather not set it back unless I have to, but I also don't want a tall, gangly rose.

I agree with mad. They both need a lot of twiggy stuff removed in my opinion. Diane

Thanks, guys! I really appreciate your feedback. I just felt like maybe I have should have pruned sooner, considering how much energy they had already put into the new growth. Anyway, the roses are now trimmed down.

It is not too late to prune them. They'll be back in no time and you will be rewarded with new healthy growth.

Too late, romogen, the massacre has already happened. I'm in Denmark, by the way. Apparently in Zone 8a. But my container roses are in the greenhouse, and they won't get out until we're well passed the odd night freeze.

Give them a good hair cut! You won't hurt them and you'll get stronger, healthier growth with more bloom. You really should never be afraid to prune HTs. Their automatic response is to GROW!

Thank you for the reassuring words, seil. I'm still a rose newbie, so this forum is invaluable to me. I also trimmed my Blue Bajou, which was a bit twiggy. Hope the same wisdom applies to floribundas.

I don't have a difficult time if something looks damaged. But I'm pretty sure that I annoyed the Kordes expert on another thread by hesitating to cut off buds and new green leaves. I'm sure that she's right but it's still hard to do!

It did hurt a little chopping away at green, sprouting canes, but what nanadoll and mad-gallica said about the twiggy, spindly stuff made sense. Next year, I'll probably trim a week or two earlier, before the roses have a chance to put too much energy into new growth that will get cut off anyway.
