Best kitchen appliances for a cook?

I cook and bake a lot. My five-year-old kitchen has a new Bosch (the Kitchenaid broke so many times, we gave up on it!), a Kitchenaid french-door fridge (hate it), and a GE Cafe 30" dual-fuel range/stove (this has been a great workhorse). We will be moving and redoing the kitchen, and I'm ready for a better lineup of appliances. I love the look of La Cornue, but first and foremost I want a stove/oven with superior cooking/baking capabilities. With this next kitchen renovation, I will have room for bigger appliances. Also, what's your favorite dishwasher? Refrigerator? Thanks in advance!

May I ask why you hate the refrigerator? I am thinking of a french door so I don't want to regret it. I had a side-by-side once from Kitchenaid once and while it ran nicely, I struggled trying to store things like a turkey in it!

I love the french door with the bottom freezer. What I don't like is that the inside plastic parts (shelving, door to the crisper) fell apart within three years. It was not a cheap fridge. It's also very noisy, including making some strange knocking sounds here and there.

Doesn't it seem like they never last any longer than a few years? I used to always turn down the extended warranty on appliances, but no longer.

Best of luck with the new home.

I completely agree about the KA fridge. I have had problems with it since day 1...strange noises, broken plastic parts, defective ice maker...

I have a bluestar gas range which I LOVE! Highly recommend.

I would post this question in the appliance forum. Lots of passion over there!

Miele seems to be a favourite for dishwashers, and I think also for wall ovens. Thermador columns get good reviews. Lots of folk love their Blue Stars.

I personally love my Miele dishwasher, fridge and I have to say that my induction cooktop was the most pleasant surprise in my new kitchen. (I knew it would be good, but Wow!)

my Maytag French door is 15 years old - we did have an issue a while back with the ice maker though.

This is kind of an off-shoot, but I broke one of the plastic shelves in my refrigerator door ... and my smart husband went on the internet and ordered a replacement part for about $25. I couldn't be too upset about it because I put something too heavy in the door.

dmcd - Love my miele dishwasher, CC cooktop and MW drawer. I'd suggest that appliances are important but layout, gadgets and storage are at least equally important. Deeper countertops = more prep space. Deeper uppers = vertical bowl storage space. Bank of triple trash (trash, recycling, paper), plus inset compost bin. I have a 10" SS surround flanking a 48" cooktop - which becomes a huge workspace for anything hot coming out of the ovens. Good luck!

Our old KA fridge (about 10 years old when we sold the house last year) was the noisiest thing I've ever lived with. And loud from Day One.

I would far rather have separate wall ovens (double) and a pro-style rangetop than a regular range any day. I'd design a new kithcen (if I ever get the chance) around those. Oh, and the Miele dishwasher, by all means.

My KA French door fridge was fantastic - and that's the problem with asking for people's opinions on appliances (although we all do it - like my recent post on vacuum cleaners). For every KA lover there's a KA owner with a bad experience. Going to the appliance forum is a good idea, but without budget numbers this is a coffee conversation at best.

Top ranges tend to be Wolf, Capitol Culinarian, and Bluestar. La Cornue and La Canche are rarely chosen in the US. Make sure you can get yours serviced where you live.

Top refrigerator choices are SubZero and Liebherr.

Top dishwasher choices seem to be Miele and Bosch, but they are smaller capacity than American brands, and some models don't have a heated dry cycle.

I really like my Bluestar french door wall oven. No bending over. A Wolf induction cooktop goes with it.

sushipup1, what is the benefit of having separate wall ovens and range top, vs. one big unit? I've only cooked/baked with the single unit, and often wonder about the pros/cons of splitting them up...

The benefits are: You can get the best of each type. Multiple use appliances always have one part better than the other--just check out reviews for ranges and people will either like the top or the oven. You don't have to bend over to load and unload a wall oven. French doors save floor space when open and are very convenient. You have more flexibility of layout as well with separate pieces. And if one breaks the other is still usable.

Also, separate components mean that it's easier for two or more people to work in the kitchen at one time. One oven is at counter-height. Two ovens. Having an ordinary range now is driving us crazy. Can't do two things at once, can't work with two people at once.

We love our LG French door fridge. It has two icemakers, so we can can ice and water through the door. It also has the door in a door feature which is so useful. We actually went through 3 fridges before finding this one. It is now probably 3 years old and is very sturdy.

At ournew place we are changing from gas to induction. My husband does most of the cooking and recently got into induction. He loves it so we are doing a range with two ovens.

Cant help with the dishwasher, as we have yet to find one we like.

I have a samsung french door and I LOVE it! I don't have the ice/water in the door but I like a plain front on the fridge so that suits me. I have had all 4 kinds of fridges -- the top freezer, a regular bottom freezer, and two side by sides -- I HATED the side by side, was OKAY with the top freezer, LOVED the bottom freezer and because of my kitchen my only options were either a side by side or a French door. Because I LOVED the bottom freezer, I chose the French door and will NEVER have anything again but a bottom freezer refrigerator whether it is a French door or a one door. What you need is where you can see it -- what you get occasionally is lower and you may have to dig but how many times do you get a package of meat out of the freezer -- ONCE a day? How many times do you get that gallon of milk out -- MANY times? My DD has a Viking and it's nicer than mine but was more expensive and hers is a single door and of course, she has no ice in the door either. I think they're dirty and unsanitary as people put their used glasses to get more ice/water so germs get on that little lever. I'm not a germaphobe but I just don't think they're clean.

My kitchenaid fridge was also a disaster. I can't even count how many times we repaired it during it's short life. For our remodel, we bought a stainless Samsung french door fridge. It has 4 doors, the top 2 are fridge, the bottom left is freezer and the right left can be either. I do have ice and water in the door but it isn't hooked up yet as the fridge is in my dining room at the moment :-) For range, I got the Samsung slide in chefs collection range. It was highly rated, and I liked the fact that you can cook at 2 temps at the same time. I have never used induction before, but I think I'm going to like it. Haven't done anything but look at it yet, because it's sitting in my living room at the moment.

I have a 48" built in Samsung Refrigerator and absolutely love it! It is well built and lit up with bright LED lights. There is a screen on the front where you can do all kinds of things including getting the news. Very easy to clean. I had a GE Monogram 48" built in and it was horrible from day one. Shelves started falling apart, etc. I do, however, have a GE monogram Advantium oven and love it.
