Which light pairs best with this chandelier?

last modified: 8 years ago

We have one light left to pick out and I could use some help selecting the last fixture that will hang over our bed in the master bedroom. The bedroom has clerestory windows that look into the master bathroom, which has a Sputnik chandelier hanging over the tub. The Sputnik is clearly visible from the bedroom. Here is the chandelier we've already purchased for the bath:

So we need something that pairs well with this Sputnik but doesn't compete with it. Both lights will be mounted on a sloped ceiling.

Here are a couple options I'm considering. I'd like it to be white or lighter in color and not take up a lot of visual space (and it shouldn't have too much glass and can't be heavy, in case of an earthquake).

  1. the Nelson saucer pendant (our ceilings are similar):
  2. The Orbit - I think this is very different and like the glow it gives off, but think it might compete too much?

    3) Basic cage pendant

  1. Simple bulb fixture:
    6) This organic fixture (either in natural or white) -- it's 16":

Any thoughts? I'm leaning towards one in particular, but I'm interested to see what others think and whether these two go together.

Also, we've already bought this light for another bedroom (the smaller one), but are considering it as an option for the master bedroom:

Out of the choices I pick the last organic one in white.

Edited: Oh, we posted at the same time I like the glass globe.

1st choice the glass globe and 2nd choice the white organic.

Thanks, justerrilynn and aktillery. justerrilynn, do you mean the last one I posted, the Moooi light as your first choice?

Yes! Love that! Your house seems so amazing.

    I like the Nelson best.

I also vote for the Nelson. I've always loved it and I think it will look awesome without competing with the Sputnik. I have the Sputnik in my dining room and need to change out my entryway light because the one I chose competes too much and bothers the eye.

Moooi is my first choice, saucer second.

Have you looked at the West Elm Capiz orbs? I like them. You didn't mention what finish you prefer?

Jmarino19 wrote what I was thinking. While I like the look of the simple bulb fixture on the same plane with the Sputnik in the abstract, I wouldn't want a bare bulb fixture over my bed. I choose the Nelson saucer.

I am a huge fan of Nelson and would choose that-it is of the same era, so it definitely works as far as that goes (no dissonance) and it is different enough that they will play off each other without competing. I think the two are spectacular together. I wanted a Nelson in our 1960 house and now that you have given me the idea, I may do both in separate but visible areas when I am able to move my husband away from our more traditional fixtures.

    thanks for the input!

thanks justterrilynn, I like the Moooi too. We had planned to put it in a kids' bedroom, but it may be a contender if it works in our space.

jmarino19, the ceiling is sloped, and it's 17 feet at the highest point. The fixture will be hung at approximately 13 1/2 feet. The bed size is king, although it will be low slung. The room is about 14x18, but the back wall is floor to ceiling glass/sliders and the other wall has transom/clerestory windows that connect to the bathroom. The fixture shouldn't be too big so that it blocks views. I think the Nelson and the Moooi in the smaller sizes both fit the bill. I eliminated the Orbit -- I think it's probably too busy, although I like it in isolation. And I agree a bare bulb is not probably the best choice.

ravencajun, those capiz pendants are very cool -- thanks! Also, a well priced option. I may swing by West Elm this weekend to look at them.

The Sputnik gets delivered tomorrow and should be installed by Friday, so I will snap a shot of the space. I'm leaning towards the Nelson too at this point.

Make a mock up of the light. With the volume you have I think you will want bigger than the smallest Nelson saucer. We have 2 small saucers over our dining table, 8' ceilings and 78" table. With that ceiling height, the Radom light in a larger than the small size could work. Though I still prefer the Nelson light, and love the Mooi for a kid room. Good luck.

I like the first one because it's soft and subtle.

Thanks for the input! We've decided on the medium sized Nelson saucer for the master. And I decided on a Coral pendant by Trubridge too in the bamboo color -- it was a close runner up. And it has such a nice glow that it casts on the ceiling, which is fun and playful for a young girl's bedroom:

And with that, we're DONE with our lighting choices! Thanks to all that weighed in -- your help is much appreciated!

I was too late, but I would have picked the saucer (really!). Reason: I had one of those Mooi like lights in my bedroom, and while it looked nice when unlit, the spider/cage pattern when illuminated was too much for me.
