Painting & Decorating my bathroom

last modified: 8 years ago

Just bought a lovely foreclosure property and trying to figure out how to make the master bathroom look more modern without spending much. The first pic I attached is with the old carpet. We did put a new wood tile throughout the house including the bathroom. Now trying to figure out what paint color would look best. Really open to anything. Also trying to figure out what colors with bath mats, what decor, accessories, etc. We're so lost. It might be the purple walls throwing us off? lol

Yes, the walls are throwing you off, definitely. So don't worry you'll be fine:)

I see the tile surround and the countertop as different colors, on these two pics

The first one seems slightly pink beige, on my monitor

The second pic seems more yellow-beige

I know how deceiving the pics can be

Which photo shows the colors more true? how you would describe the tile?

I'm asking since all the other choices will derive from working with it

    Very nice flooring btw..great job

The color is more accurate in the first pic with it being a slight pink beige tile.

I agree with justerrilynn about the wall color

The previous owner picked the wrong shade..a cooler lilac. Throws everything off. Warm cream, slightly peach-y undertone will make this mistake go away. Bonus: we people tend to look good when surrounded by these types of colors..:) We don't always like them, but oh boy, do they love us:)

Now. I realized when people say "modern" they often mean different things

when you say "modern" you mean "modern" as in style (cleaner lines, colors either more muted or more bright but with a lot of presence so to say..florals -if one loves florals-tend to be big, love for geometry..lots of natural materials but also not shying away from plastic etc)..or do you mean "modern" as in "more updated"?

Because for example light fixtures-what you choose will depend on it. Oh you can mix and match these of course-but if you like more modern as in modern, you need to take it there ever so slightly with light fixtures since the bath is not modern in its nature. Mirrors-if you decide to go for different ones-will depend on it. Accessories..you're freer there..as well as with art..you can be reserved in both, in some as justerilynn suggests, or go to town so to say, when you figure out what speaks to you of course.

I'm personally fine with the vanity and countertop..these are also bigger items so to say in terms of budget so will depend on how far you're willing to take it. Then you'll see how you'll want new sinks..:) and then you might like less your tub surround..in short won't stop there

If you want to keep it simpler I'd choose a) paint b) lights c) new faucets? and maybe adding handles of your preferred style to the vanity? d) accessories(towels, storage thingies etc) and art-never underestimate art..it has the ability to transport you places like very few things do

Ah, and I wouldn't be true to myself if I didn't say "and a plant", lol

If you want a bigger change-then I'd look into changing the countertop etc knowing that's the "creeping elegance" waits to jump on you ..like a puma hiding in a tree..:)

Unless you really hate the vanity

Otherwise I'd let it be, make small changes, work around it

I'd probably go with an off white, like BM Natural Linen or Muslin, or perhaps even lighter. Other options: Try SW Accessible Beige or even Balboa Mist (although that's much more gray). They have ever so slightly pinkish undertones.

And, yes, I'd gel stain the cabinets a slightly darker stain. And, yes, to plants!

Yes there are a few ways to go. But the main theme from all is a more neutralized palette. Go a same color wall, off white linen, beigy, or beige/gray. Do white or dark gel stain on cabinets.

Here is but one idea with a close to same color wall as tile. Those mirrors I pasted on are only there to cover the pink reflection that was messing with my mock-up. I did a dark stain cabinet and it looked nice but to me not as nice as the white. The white tied in the white appliances of the sinks and tub. That light up there is only $129.

edited: the light above is the 3 bulb and is $175. It's damp rated.

I'm not so sure about painting the vanity frankly..or even staining it darker

what is the "why" behind it?

it's a nice -goes-with-everything color. the grain is prominent..would most likely show through anyway. some people like grain showing, some don't(I don't for example..but then it's not my vanity)). Staining it darker color-why it will be prettier in darker color?

If it's a matter of creating contrast with the flooring, a nice rug will be enough to take care of that.

Why to tie white appliances, they are already tied by being several white appliances in the bathroom. They repeat each other.

    Just thinking aloud here.

Check very well that over bath lighting..totally prohibited where we live. Well people still put it anyway, if there's no inspection or after they passed their inspection. But make sure it's suited to wet environments.

I'd concentrate on getting different lights over the mirrors..but maybe after you're done with re painting to see the room better and feel better what you'd rather go for. But I'd start looking at lights now..you know just to see what you like what you don't. Maybe you arrive to a conclusion you like the ones you've got because you can' find anything else that you like enough to justify the trouble:) Wouldn't surprise me. Got almost all my lights second-hand ..to afford some variety you know..:)

Love justerrilynn's art placement suggestion-will be very very cool. Art and right paint alone will make you feel totally different in this bath.

You can decide to go with darker paint btw too..the main principle is to keep it warm (unless you want to really bring the pink in the tile out, to contrast it..but few people do usually) and to echo that pink undertone. For example light brown is a dark beige..:)

    Yes, lighter or darker!

Sheesh I did that mock-up on my main computer and it looked great. I just now looked at this post on my phone and ewww the colors look completely different.

the colors are wildly different sometimes

i googled my Quartz..don't remember why..I think me and my friend were discussing whether we have the same one or not since she said hers is so similar..anyway if I saw it on computer screen instead of IRL I'd never even recognize it the same color let alone choosing to check it out. Nothing, nothing in common. Looks several shades darker..like, significantly darker..is cement blue gray while mine is a greenish off-white..:) I was in shock. And these are professional pictures or so you'd think.

It might be that my monitor plays here tricks on me too. Maybe on some other screen this color does somewhat resemble what it really is..:)

I think I fixed the above mock-up a bit. I cut a tile off the front of the tub (one of the lighter ones) and used that as the wall color instead of eyeballing with Microsoft Paint. Of course once enlarged the color changed again, So, I'm thinking that once that sort of banaidish mauve/peach/beige paint is picked to match...toss it and go a row or two over into a more warm version of the tile color. But, stay close. A wrong move will bring out more pink from the tile. P.s I tried adding some gray and the tile got Pinker.

So, picture the wall paint in above mockup slightly warmer in color.

Heck, lets rip that tile out lol
