Look lovely but no room for a freestanding bath sadly as I have a small bathroom.

I have a steel bath and it got chipped almost immediately when someone knocked over a heavy plant pot into it. It's otherwise nice but I don't think I'd notice if it was plastic, and it'd have been cheaper – and not chipped! I think the bath panel makes more difference; I have horizontal wooden planks (they're actually slimline hardwood decking planks) and this more than the bath material sets the style of the room I think. I'm about to refurb another bathroom and am going for plastic with a tongue and groove panel. Have you decided on yours yet?

One point to consider is that aluminium is a very good thermal conductor, especially in comparison to plastic. This means that the aluminium bath will be better at heat retention of the water.

I was going to say the opposite, I've had steel and iron baths in other houses and the water seems to go cold quite quickly, the one I have now is acrylic and is warm to touch and seems to retain the heat better. The only slight downside is that I chose a longer, deeper, wider bath and it does take a bit longer to fill to a suitable wallowing depth.

It may not be as straightforward as I thought... After visiting a couple of bathroom showrooms we were informed that steel/ aluminium baths were better at retaining the heat of the water than acrylic baths but have only ever used acrylic baths and do find that they do retain the heat of water for a decent amount of time...

In theory, as metal is a good conductor of heat rather than an insulator, a metal bath should cool down quicker. We have a nice thick acrylic bath and that retains the heat very well.
