Organizing in our rental

We've successfully moved (we're in a rental townhouse until we design and build our new house).

Half of our stuff is in storage. The other half is all unpacked (except for the drinking glasses which were erroneously marked 'storage' and now I need to find). (I did find the wine and margarita glasses, though, so the important stuff is taken care of). I haven't unpacked pictures/decorative items, though.

At the last minute we decided to keep my two sewing wardrobe size cabinets. One is now acting as my pantry and the other as the bar/serving storage. They work perfectly.

I really pruned what we didn't put in storage since this kitchen is much smaller than I'm used to--when we move again into the house we're building, I'll have to seriously consider how badly I need stuff that I've managed to store for a year!

My kitchen has 3 blind corner cabinets (1 upper, 2 lower). I've been spoiled the last 10 years by having my kitchen base cabinets all be drawers instead of doors. I'm working around that with white plastic baskets to organize.

I did some obsessive labeling of boxes and it really paid off. Every body had a color coded label of where it went: "Beth's office", "DH's office", "Master bath"--those were primarily for the movers. Then there was another label that indicated what was it in ("top left desk drawer", "credenza cabinets"). Finally, for items not going to the main floor, there were stickers of "Upstairs" and "Basement".

For starters, it was fun making all of the labels :-). I love labels. (I know some of you share that love). It really simplified unpacking--I'll definitely be using that method for our next move! (Hopefully our final move)

There wasn't enough storage in the laundry room so I ordered a 6 wire shelf unit from Amazon. I didn't want to spend much money, but I needed the storage. I also ordered some S hooks, which are working perfectly to hang the broom, mop, and floor steamer.

I had some white wire shelves that hang from other white wire shelves and those are also perfect for the laundry room and a few for our closet.

I also ordered a key hook rack for outside the garage door (DH will put it up today). We had a hook "in inventory" for the back of the closet door, so now our robes are hung up.

The shower head was way too high--I couldn't even rinse my hair well. We got a sliding unit that we put up this morning. We also got a corner shelf unit to go in the closet stall so there's somewhere to put shampoo and such.

I actually had sufficient storage space in our old house, so moving into a townhouse that's much smaller and doesn't have a closet in every bathroom makes it harder to put things away (hence so much stuff in storage). (But then, how many sets of guest towels and extra guest bed sheets do I really need?)

Almost all of my white baskets need new labels :-) but things are really getting organized!

I wanted to share--and figured all of you would understand how exciting it is to get everything put together!

have fun w/ those new labels! (I love labels too)

Your move sounds really organized! (except for those drinking glasses--but hey, martini glasses will hold water too)

It will be interesting to see whether you find yourself really missing the kitchen equipment you tucked away in storage, or whether you find that it's just as easy to work w/ what you've got. What a great opportunity to try it out!

We've been missing the glasses for 3 weeks. Since I drink soda from the can that didn't bother me, but DH was drinking his milk from a mug. He found the glasses in the basement--the box was properly labelled "Kitchen" and "Glasses" but it got put down in the basement (where it didn't belong)

We also found the clamps (for some reason, we've decided to do woodworking)

I've decided I didn't keep enough cutting boards out. This weekend, I'll find a few from the basement storage and bring them to the kitchen. I don't like to stop what I'm doing and clean off a cutting board while preparing dinner (and tomatoes and strawberries don't go together) and I ran out of cutting boards today.

I kept the George Foreman grill out and actually used it already :-)

Beth, you are an inspiration! I loved hearing your success story.

Think how much fun it will be to move into the big, new house, and have empty shelves and cabinets, because you've gotten rid of so much stuff! I think I would leave currently stored kitchen stuff in the boxes for a while, to see if you really do need the stuff that's in them.

We've been making a lot of mess in the garage (woodworking) but there were no shelves. Amazon to the rescue! These will work well in the new place eventually and for now fit perfectly in the garage next to the tool chest.

I've already identified some things I need to retrieve from the basement (baking pans and additional cutting boards), but that's a good thing to know. I am realizing that some things I've had readily accessible need to find an out-of-the-way storage space. I only need one 12" skillet, most of the time. I sometimes need two, but on a daily basis, one is all I need.

Stay tuned for pictures of my spice rack--I hope to finish it this weekend!
