Rugs that do not stain luxury vinyl flooring

We just put down luxury vinyl planks in our downstairs. I have read that you should not put rubber backed rugs on the floor as they could yellow it. Where can I find rugs that will not stain it, but will stay in place? Thanks!

The ONLY reason to use a rubber-backed padding or rug is for waterproofing, such as outdoor mats or garage/shed areas that have concrete floors.

Indoor rugs of any fiber will not hurt your LVP. We've used everything from cheap bathroom runners to handmade wool or silk rugs and never had any issues. I'm a rug fanatic; we have more rugs than we have rooms, LOL. I've been collecting and walking on our rugs for almost 50 yrs, in three different homes with a variety of flooring materials, including hardwood.

Use of a pad is optional, but:

- if a good quality rug, a pad helps it last longer and gives a "cushier" feel

- helps keep very light thin rugs, such as cotton druggets, from sliding underfoot.

Use any good quality latex rug padding that specifically says it is safe for hardwood and vinyl flooring. Any flooring store should carry them, as do stores like Target and JC Penney.

BTW, pay attention to the care label before buying a rug. If it says spot clean, it means just that.

The one rug material I don't approve of is jute, because it can't be cleaned. There are jute blends that are better, and best are the polypropylene rugs that simulate jute but can be hosed down to clean (outside, of course, LOL!). I'm not a fan of the look or texture, but it's a popular look with many decorators.

The rugs aren't what's causing the lvp to stain, it's the rubber backing. Any area rug should be fine. Which ever pad you choose to use under it, if it has a rubber backing, it has to be breathable. Find a rubber pad that states it is wood floor compliant and you shouldn't have any problems.

I am in the process of ordering my luxury vinyl plank flooring and I put the question to my contractor. The rubber backing is the problem and the best rug pad to use under a rubber backed rug is a soy based product called Anchor Grip. If you have this flooring in your bathrooms as well don’t forget an anchor grip rug pad for the bathroom rugs if they have rubber backing or just have a woven rug with no backing. I’ve also read Jute rugs and natural woven type rugs are fine.

Yes, I just had LVP flooring installed all downstairs and now wish I hadn't! I never knew this about the rugs until now! It is so hard to believe that none of these rugs will work unless you have this type of rug pad! I have spent a fortune now on rugs and now need to get rug pads because you can't have rubber-backing or it will destroy your new expensive LVP floors! So ridiculous! It is so hard to find vinyl-backed rugs! I am so frustrated by this! Any suggestions on where to buy such rugs, doormats, kitchen rugs without the rubber-backing and without having to pay a fortune on rug pads!?

I want to put stair treads down on my LVP floors and I found some with TPE backing - is that safe? - it calls is rubber but TPE is Thermoplastic Rubber. Shouldn't that be safe to put down on the LVP?

I use wool rugs because there is no rubber backing at all and they are breathable. The down side is the wool rugs don't or at least I should say variety in style is slim and they tend to me a little more expensive.

Try Tumble rugs. The mat backing says it’s suitable for LVP flooring. I’m going to try them!

K. Meador - I know this is an old post but I'm hoping you'll see it. How have the Tumble rugs worked for you? We just installed new Coretec lvp in the foyer and I'm crossing my fingers I can still use my Tumble rug.
