Working with avocado bathroom tile.

last modified: 8 years ago

I'm trying to update/modernize our main floor bath. I've already taken down wallpaper and swapped mirror, knobs, faucet, and light fixture for more modern ones.

I'm stuck on the vanity. I don't really want to try to replace it since its tiled in and I'm trying to stay cheap, so im thinking paint, but it needs to coordinate with the lovely avacodo tile (not my favorite, but not the worst since the walls and fixtures are white).

I'm thinking of painting the counter a dark grey/black color, perhaps with a faux soap stone look. I considered white, but the sink is bright white and the tile slightly off white, so that seemed tricky.

For the cabinet, I was thinking either creamy white (match tile), dark avocado green (embrace it), or leave it wood.

What would you do? I'm open to other suggestions as well! Thanks in advance!

I think the vanity would look great painted creamy white. I personally wouldn't paint the top. I would think it would get messed up with constant water and cleaning? I would leave the top as is. I think it matches the tile and ties it all together.

I kinda like it as is and would get a finish touch up pen for the corner. I would leave the top as is.

The dark wood color lightens up the avocado relatively, and it fits with the vintage floor tile. These are the sorts of things that you really can't "compensate" for. Since you are keeping the avocado, it is best to try and work with it and embrace it rather than apologize for it, so to speak.

I'm not sure if I can find it, but years ago someone here posted an avocado bathroom makeover that was gorgeous. She used a fabric that had some black in it, if I recall.

    I'd leave everything as is

..and yes..you can try and find shower curtain that'd incorporate your main colors including black(you seem to like it if you want a soapstone look?), if patterned fabric is something you'd consider

but overall I think it looks very nice already

Smhinnb, is this the one you meant?

    http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2607396/before-and-after-avocado-bathroom-update

But I also wouldn't do much to this one. On my monitor it looks more tan than avocado, actually.

While I like the brown cabinet, I think it makes the toilet stand out more by contrast. That's the biggest issue I see. But I wouldn't paint. I would find a cool shower curtain that incorporates brown and avocado. Any window in the room? Maybe brown colored rattan blinds? Maybe kick the art up a notch?

I think I'd be all over that bathroom with some really wild wallpaper and a complementary shower curtain. These two especially caught my eye:

I'd pick a color from the print and paint the vanity and probably redo the counter. That is such a tiny amt of laminate, I think it could be redone very cheaply - as stone remnant piece or new laminate.

Here's a more sedate version of #1, which would actually be very pretty with your colors:

I love the avocado ceiling here:

    Creamy white

I wouldn't mess with it either. Paint or paper the walls and add nice coordinating towels. Brown, creamy white and the green would look great in my opinion. I've always been one to embrace the vintage tile colors if things are otherwise in good condition.

This is "white" grabbed directly from the tiles in the photo. I don't think I am a fan. I think it's kind of dull looking by comparison.

Paint the vanity ebony and replace the top and sink. It's small so cost will be small. It will smarten everything up tremendously.

This is "Apex Grand" by Cole and Son. I know you just took down wallpaper for a more modern look, but this is modern. I am not sure if this would work exactly with the tile (on my monitor it doesn't quite) and I know it is very large scale but I don't know how large.

I'd change the countertop, I like everything else.

I too would leave the counter and vanity as is. Everything looks clean and in good shape.

Really really love like the wallpapers above!

I like everything in the bathroom except the rim around the sink. Yes, I know purists would not be happy with me but if I could buy one new thing for the bathroom it would be a sink large enough to cover that.

My first thought was that the countertop that dates it the most. I'm with Anglophilia, new counter top and darken up the cabinet.

I understood from the OP it's tiled in..the countertop..not easy to change..I might have misunderstood of course

I actually like it as is. The only thing I might consider changing is the cabinet hardware and maybe refinishing the cabinet in a lighter stain. The room looks to be in great shape.

You know what would look kind of neat? Just paint the ceiling a dark shade of avocado. You wouldn't really need to do anything else. I couldn't find a ceiling with your color but look how nice a painted ceiling looks in keeping with the white or light walls and tile.

Your tile color is hard to see but maybe one of the darkest colors on these BM chits for drama.

    I'd do BM Mediterranean Olive...wow

I also like the wood vanity and would not paint it. But if you do want to paint the countertop I think you could do that. I painted one and it has held up perfectly for about 8 years so far. Mine was a leathered look white laminate that was stained and nasty looking. I didn't want a new top so decided to paint it. It took about a week because I allowed a full day in between coats. Clean it really well and then use BIN shellac primer which is thin and watery. I love this primer because you can use it on just about any material And paint will then adhere. It dries fast but I allowed a day until I applied the next coat of paint. Then I painted 2 coats of gray paint over the next couple of days and then 3 coats of clear water based poly. As mentioned, allow 24 hours between each coat and do a light sanding and wipe down between each coat.

Here is an picture I just took of my vanity top. I have had no problems at all with chipping, staining, etc. I've even used BKF to clean it at times.

Love the avocado tile. I have lime/apple green in my bathroom and have paired it with gray and white.

I know I keep chiming in but the counter top is one of the things that ties the room together.

The walls, vanity, and floor all have a bit of the avocado and a bit of the white. Keep removing the bits of avocado and the more isolated the remaining avocado elements look.

It's going to start looking like a bathroom you wanted to completely redo but ran out of money if the floor is the only avocado left.

I think people make this mistake a lot " I don't like this color so I will get rid of most of it except the part that is too expensive to get rid of....and then I will just pretend that big avocado floor isn't there. Maybe no one else will notice it if I decorate like it's not even there."

It's a mistake and it makes the room look disjointed most of the time.

The prevailing sentiment in GW is that people will not be happy with your bathroom until it is either all white, or at least not avocado, or not dated. That's not going to happen unless you redo the tile and vanity. That's not going to happen but it's also not going to stop people from slowly chipping away it things until it's close enough to fit the mold.

I think a barkcloth shower curtain would look fabulous! What was the wallpaper?

I think that some of the wild print shower curtains might be a little too much going on with the tile floor and vanity.

We embraced our peach tile bathroom by painting the vanity base (this was also painted peach to match tile and it was awful). Then added this fun palm print wallpaper that makes me happy and a bamboo shade rather than more color or print. I think similar paper like Olychick posted would be great. This is ours.

What about a monogrammed shower curtain. This site has a color option called "Dried Herb" which could look nice on a white curtain, or they offer that as a fabric color and you could do the trim and monogram in white.

I like k9arlene's shower curtain..but here's another option, elohbee, if you want to introduce more black( I see it in 2 frames of your artwork..the art that I can see on the pics I mean to say..don't know whether there are other black elements in the bathroom? i keep coming back to black(c) because of your initial vision of a soapstone look)

inverted would be better of course...more murky green and white, less black..

they have it in PVC fabric(green is a tad brighter), but I don't know whether they have it in ready-made shower curtain too..can be researched I guess..also looked up on eBay etc

but I like the modern style for your space(of course it's you who have to like it)), and their quality is awesome. it's also longer than usual.

while I love big flowers -here's another fabric of theirs(this one is cotton, not coated), same style, small flowers..a bit busy to my eye, but as an option

Orla Kiely has some cool stuff too..in terms of accessories..didn't get to shower curtains yet..

(I know many people prefer only white towels, well that's not me(it is my DH though))

    https://us.amara.com/products/speckled-flower-oval-pistachio

    https://us.amara.com/products/spot-flower-domino-towel-pistachio-slate

and you can do monogrammed as Palimpsest suggests, even though to me it'd be too much but in terms of pairing elements-that'd work of course

did find couple shower curtains with Orla Kiely's designs as well, say this https://www.wish.com/c/57e340817de9ff18f11bac67?hide_login_modal=true&from_ad=pla4&_display_country_code=US&gclid=CJzJgoz4odQCFY-DaQod7i4JZA..but I'm not sure about colors..probably too yellow?

tell us though what you think..or we can suggest and suggest but that's not what you want at all..maybe you hate printed shower curtains as a class

Hehe, I like the avocado shower curtain.

I also like the vanity top but would still paint the vanity itself. And I'd introduce more avocado colored accessories in bathmat, towels, etc. Perhaps even paint the wall above the tiles (and/or ceiling) in a shade of the color (as posted above).

Not sure if this will help but this is what worked for us in our last house where we had avocado tiles, a bit greener I think. They were in the shower/tub area and original to our 60's house, still in like new condition. We decided to embrace, cabinets were painted creamy white. We did change out our countertop to a brown/green granite, it had been faux marble cream and brown, not unlike yours. But I think what helped the most was the shower curtain and towels. We did a print shower curtain in creamy white, brown, greens and turquoise, an imitation bark cloth. Towels were white with avocado and teal accent hand towels.

Also you could paint the trim. Here's a kit at a relatively low price. They come out great. Paint tile

    Hi Elohbee --

Great thread with no shortage of opinions!

Q: How old is your home? Because to me this seems closer to late 40s/50s tile (floor/walls) look with a 70s vanity/counter/sink. IME the ceramic holders were dropped by the 70s but those routered cabs were big then.

Seems like a wall hung sink plus/minus chrome legs would have been likely.

I mean I don't know that it would change anyone's mind from what they recommended but....

Similar (same?) color field tile that's used as your accent, with creamy woodwork:

Me, I'm thinking this vanity would be fine painted a creamy shade to match the off-white of the walls or floor tile.

Or if you keep the cab wood, I'd definitely use a good treatment(s) on it to nourish the wood and give the finish more of a glow.

Then do a color you like above and/or a printed shower curtain.

I know you have plenty of inspiration above, but here are a few more color combos:

GE introduced Avocado appliances in 1966. Kohler introduced Avocado fixtures in 1967 and offered them until 1979.

The colors in the two-tone green tile above is more consistent with Kohler Argent (the minty one) introduced in the early 1950s. They also had a Spruce Green which was introduced in 1945, which is bluer than the darker green). Other companies had their own colors (especially Crane and Eljer), but the drab yellow green we associate with Avocado started pretty specifically in 1966-67 for some reason. These fixtures are white of course, but tile manufacturers did try to follow suit with fixtures. Daltile still produces Kohler-specific tile colors.

    Hi Pal --

Great info re dates, thanks. Those late 60s colors you reference are SO much deeper than what I'm seeing in the OP's post, though.

Like another poster above, it really reads more khaki on my monitor. Couldn't you visualize it as 50s?

RetroRenovation.com has a great article with a gentleman who has a lot of vintage tile sample boards (and tile).

This board wasn't dated (and with my eyesight I couldn't see manufacturer) but Row 2, tile 1 labeled "avocado" sure looks familiar. ;) Of course as you say manufacturer's intro'd new shades while carrying over others.

    [eta: a clue...who made "Persian Tart" (?)]

I don't know...OP's bath is whispering "50s" to me so it's easy for me to see it minus that dark wood and swirl counter. Definitely could be personal bias!

That looks like a Daltile book to me, and Golden Granite 0 138 and Pepper White are Daltile colors as is Desert Grey X114--all still offered.

The flesh colored tile is "Persian Tan". "Suez Tan" was a similar Kohler color.

Wild Rose which has TM next to it is a Kohler color which puts this book (or that page anyway) at 1980.

The bathroom could be earlier, I guess, but with the vanity tiled in. ( I am thinking she means around the toe kick, too.) I think the vanity is original to the bathroom.

It's also possible that this is not Avocado, but one of the variations of Harvest Gold. This is a Harvest Gold toilet seat swatch:

True Harvest Gold was browner and greener than people think, and often other colors of fixtures--Sunrise and Citron, which predated Harvest Gold, and fresher more yellow-y gold colors which replaced the 1960s version pretty quickly in the 1970s--are all lumped in with Harvest/Autumn/Spanish/Aztec gold.

I can't say how much I love the look you have in that bathroom, now. The only thing I'd change is the shower curtain... I saw some good suggestions above. Pick something that fits in with your mood, and works with the actual colors (since monitor colors are always a bit off). Does this room have a window? If so... blinds or even curtains, that work with the rest of the color scheme could be fun.

on my monitor the tile looks like the "olive" one..first from the left

Adore the avocado shower curtain. OP, you have to get that one!

I don't like the vanity counter but I like the looks of the vanity. But, is it wood or fiberboard?

If it's fiberboard then I would say to save yourself irritation down the line and replace the whole thing with a nicely sealed wood one. Our fiberboard vanity is warping at the edges and I wish we had just waited until we could find a wood vanity we liked.

Otherwise, all I think this bathroom needs are some textiles to tie it together. Regarding window coverings--is your window textured glass? If so then you don't need coverings. If not then I would just replace the glass.

I like it all except the counter. I would replace it or paint it. I would also get a fluffy rug that is plush with texture and hang art that has a dark wood frame to tie in your wooden cabinet. I would do something wimsical, like a large avocado print :)

Thanks all!! Sorry to have posted and disappeared (had overnight guests). It was really interesting to read through all the suggestions! I was somewhat amused by the split of "the counter is great, keep it" and "the counter is the worst, it's what needs to go!"

I tend to agree that the counter is the worst. Ok, not the worst, but just a really bad faux stone Formica. It really is tiled in so changing it would be a challenge. It's nice to see others have had luck with paint!

I don't mind the wood cabinet (the routed fronts aren't my favorite, but aren't terrible) and I'm not at all opposed to leaving it--it's pine (I think) not particle board. I appreciate the white mock up--i think you're right, it does wash out and sort of dull the bathroom.

House was built in 1972. Everything was close to original when we moved in. Prior owners liked a traditional, semi-colonial style (Dutch colonial house).

The bath has a tub, but is not used as a full bath (it's basically the downstairs powder room). I love some of the print shower curtains, but I'd rather the shower sort of disappear in the room and so I thought the white did that better.

I love some of the dark wallpaper options as well, but in practice, I just don't think I'm a wallpaper girl.

I definitely understand the need to maintain enough of the avocado/olive green (it is more tan than most avocado, but it's definitely in the green family) so that it looks intentional, and I have heard that the best way to minimize the look of a color can be to add more (perhaps muted, lighter, darker, etc). Hand towels with some green in them should help (thanks for the links), and maybe changing the art.

Overall, I like a more clean/plain/minimal look. I'm glad that many of you like it as is, and it may get largely left alone if we can't figure out a good option to paint the countertop.

Also, here's a picture with old wallpaper, medicine cabinet, and light. A bit dingy and fussy for my taste.

You all have sent me down an internet rabbit hole trying to find a tile match, just out of curiosity. (We also have a yellow bathroom and a blue one. There was some serious love of colored tile here!). I'll let you know if I find a match!

I find myself more drawn to the green and white color schemes, esp the orla kiely towels and the first fabric (?) House Vixen posted with the roundish leaves/flowers. Though the black in that marrimeko shower curtain is nice! The avocado shower curtain is hilarious!

The picture frames are spray painted a really dark brown (working with thrift store frames and spray paint i had on hand). I should probably either go black and then add more black, or match them to the vanity and go with no black.

I'm still stuck on what to do with the counter. What if I painted it a darker avocado green? Im also still intrigued by the ceiling painting idea.

I like their wallpaper. But yes, you need to be a wallpaper person I guess

(the cabinet does seem a mix and match that went a bit wrong..)

I like your idea of darker green for the counter. And painting the ceiling...might be cool to try that. I'd take my time to chicken out first:)..and then I'd make a sample on a big piece of paper first, stick it there..to see how it feels.

Yes, please, let us know if you find a match for the tile:)
