Front porch/landing ideas

I'm looking for ideas for the small front porch/landing of our new build modern "Craftsman-style" home (it's probably loosely Craftsman). Specifically, I'm thinking of a chair or small bench that I could fit on the landing along with some planters, but I have no idea of what style or colour or what would look good in terms of size.

I love the colour of our front door, so that won't be changing (it's getting touch ups next week from an unfortunate wreath incident), though I will most likely switch the front door hardware and house numbers out to bronze or a darker colour at some point for contrast. I also appreciate fun and quirky things, as illustrated by our doormat.

Stonework and landscaping will need to wait until at least next year since the lot still needs to settle so ignore the builder pavers. I do have big ideas for a stone landing with built-in planters and brick columns with light posts where the pavers are now (extended out to a larger area of course) so we may be living with the current set-up for a few more years. So in the meantime, I'll just need to dress up the landing.

Finally, please excuse the embarrassing Christmas lights, it's been a very wet spring and since the lot next door isn't sodded yet we can't get the ladder up on the side of the house without it sinking in and falling over. They're coming off this weekend even though my husband keeps arguing that Christmas is only a few months away at this point...

Beautiful home! I think the entry would really benefit from a flush mount light or small pendant hung centered to the door. Copper or brass would be a nice finish to bring in since it fits with both your color scheme and the craftsman style. Good luck with your updates!

I love that idea! We only have pot lights right now so it definitely needs something to anchor it. Thanks!

I like what I see - particularly the front door mat :) but would like to see a picture from a bit further back that has the garage door as well. Agree with a craftsman style light fixture if you can get the wiring to it :(. Some landscaping to soften that hard corner on the left and a potted plant with craftsman planter.

Look forward to seeing more pictures..happy Friday all!

Thanks! I can definitely take a picture of the full house when the light is better tomorrow. I appreciate the input!

Forgot to ask...neighbors look close, do you have to maintain clearance etc.. Will you try to go to the back via that space/will there be a fence.?

They are close but they're my in-laws so we're going plan yard landscaping and fencing together so it will be cohesive. Thankfully we all have the same taste!

Your lawn is very strange. It looks like someone dropped a grass-covered pillow in your yard.

If you put a chair on the porch you'll want to add a railing to the side to prevent a tumble.

I would also paint or veneer the concrete foundation in order to make it blend better with the house. Do the same with the risers on the porch steps.

Since the door hardware and house numbers are brushed nickel, I'd stick to that finish or change everything out to copper. I like the finish you have now. The porch is darling but small, so one nice plant in a raised plant stand seems like the best accent.

tatts your comment about our lawn made me laugh! That is pretty much what happened, the builder graded the front yard too high and it's still settling now, it will drop over the next year. It's a very small front yard regardless and we're stuck with all of the utility boxes so we'll need a lot of tall grasses and shrubs in the future.

We will definitely be refinishing the porch and steps. We're in a debate right now since my husband wants to put a coating on whereas I would prefer stonework.

I think a planter or plant stand may be our best bet since we've been shopping all day and I still haven't seen a single chair I like (plus the height issue that was pointed out, I would rather not close in the space with a railing).

Light fixture and planter in craftsman style. Address foundation and will look for your other pictures for some landscaping for additional pizzazz..

Here's a picture of our full house. I put a small planter together today because I couldn't find anything else I liked (we already had the pot) and I'm going to start looking online for bigger pots. As a note, we're in Canada's capital so the houses are very close in suburban areas (close to the city) unless you move to more rural areas. Though I have attached a view of our back view which is the reason we bought here!

Fabulous! Do you have a decent back yard? Since you are related to your neighbors, you can create a very cool entertaining area/deck in front, down the alley or in back...What's your preference? Yard Crashers tv show had a similar situation a few years ago and the transformation was super cool.

Our backyard is absolutely tiny unfortunately, it was the trade off for the view since the area behind us is protected space. However, when we fence our yard next year (we have a dog and plan on getting a second next year since our beloved Great Dane passed away this year of old age) we'll most likely put a gate between our yard and our in-laws'.

If up north, the faux pottery will handle the extreme cold better and is less expensive.....go big as it will be the only thing on your porch..you should have room for a taller skinny evergreen of some sort and add a shorter coordinating pot with some color/annuals..in the winter, you can add good quality faux holly and berries.

Unbelievable view in back...can you take a picture that incorporates your in-laws yard as well. Do you want a meeting/entertainment area between-in front leading to back?

I can definitely take a picture in the light tomorrow, though they only moved in a week ago so their lot needs grading and sod. We'll probably have our own styles in our yards but they will most likely be somewhat linked for entertaining. For example, they have a gas line for a BBQ and we're looking into getting a Big Green Egg :-) But our current patio furniture are different styles since theirs is more traditional and we have more of a modern living room couch type set with side chairs.

Picture a shared firepit in front with comfy chairs on each side then something stepping stones and landscaping leading to back yards..
