Are You Getting a Real Christmas Tree or Artificial Tree This Year?
Comments (190)My choice is definitely an artificial tree. But I don't think they last any longer than real ones. Virtually every year my husband of 38 years goes downstairs to bring up last year's tree. Then he comes back up a couple of hours later, empty-handed, sadly shaking his head, and explaining why we need to buy a new tree. The 1,000 lights are the usual suspects. Although the manufacturer swears if one burns out the rest will remain lit, you know doggone well he deserves coal in his stocking. Sometimes the cause is a combination of entire sections of burned out lights and impossible-to-identify colored tips that are key to the assembly of the prickly little beast that seals its fate. Judging from the six human-body-sized, bulging boxes in our storage room we've amassed an impressive collection of at least six full-sized trees. My sweet, well-intentioned hubby, who works 80-hour weeks, has vowed annually to donate the old trees to charity, but his intentions seldom make it upstairs these days, which has a lot to do with our son, our only child, being a Marine. He doesn't talk about it. Like most men, he holds everything in so tightly, he clamps down on his lower lip with his front teeth to keep his feelings from popping out. Perhaps he opens up to his kindred spirits, the lonely trees, while he's downstairs pondering their fate. I hope so. I've begun looking forward to our annual trek to Home Depot to "chop down" our newest artificial tree from their pile of boxes. Our son got leave this year. I pray he makes it home safely. He'll be home with us and with his little girl. I can't imagine needing anything brighter than the lights in my granddaughter's five-year-old eyes. But Grampa will surely pick out a shiny new tree, with 1,000 blinking white lights, guaranteed to remain lit even if one burns out, by a person destined to receive coal in his or her stocking. Comments (33)Any ideas on what a "few shades darker" than Cloud White would be in a conservative neutral? Moonlight white, for example, or is that not dark enough? The painters need the color tomorrow. I don't have more time to consider and get access to fan decks, etc. I have lots of color samples (large size) from Ben Moore particularly in the gray taupe zone but none seemed a great fit to me or my decorating savvy friend. I have yet to pick an area rug and upholstery/furniture and window treatments so want the paint choice to not interfere with the process. I could just paint the tower the same as the wall color Cloud White but I really like the idea of some contrast which Daniel Dionne Designs llc said should have a positive effect on the room for the interim until the tower can more favorably be addressed. I have worked hard to get a good contrasting color that matches something in the tile. The tile colors are difficult to match (and I'm getting to dislike the tiles after all this grief they're causing me!). Since all the grays and taupes and greiges haven't been obvious, I'm now thinking of remaining in the Off-Whites. But will this be enough contrast? Also, I will tell the painters tomorrow to paint the horizontal wood trim pieces. I hadn't thought of it or understood the horizontal "interference" they created with the vertical. I appreciate the suggestion and associated follow up....See MorePlanning on building house from ground up vs buying a fixer upper.
Comments (32)Thank you everybody! there are already plans and permits on the lot that we are looking into, that is why I didn't bother with worrying about it, time and stress was more of our concern than money which I shouldn't have bothered mentioning because either way we will spend our money on a house we want and we wouldn't be looking into it if we knew it would bankrupt us. Obviously my estimation was unrealistic so ok we will spend more if we have to. Also, we are not looking into getting a loan, my family happened to gift us with money before from an estate sale that we felt should go to another investment that we can actually enjoy for ourselves. we have family who can help with the building process as that is what they have done for three generations but I guess I failed to mention all that and really just wanted a general concencus on what better way to go and the best use of our money. I've always been told never tell people you have money unless you plan on giving it away. So anyhow. I will post pics if we ever end up getting a fixer upper vs building our own.. I have nothing against old houses, but to me it just feels like I constantly have to update it and I'm over doing that with my 60 yr old house that we just renovated and still i don't feel like it belongs to us, this the reason why I thought building our own will somehow give us that experience. Also we are not just moving into this neighborhood just because it is upscale, this is the only area that has more land than house in comparison to other areas, we live by the beach and houses come small with no yards for our kids. I happen to have a 3000sft home now and feel I can use less to clean and wish I have yard space for my children to run around. So we thought 2000 sft is substantial, the houses in the hills have less than that and nobody told them not to build there! So of course it was a little offensive to tell us living in a box is not going to work. In comparison to other states, there is a big difference in housing size, your mansions will ever be the same as ours. Wish I could live in a acres of house somewhere else but we happen to have our careers here and can't find that anywhere else. With that said, I'm going to start working on this project, our agent is coming to meet with us tomorrow and will try to update every with our shoe box of a future house!lol...See Morekitchen update & landing on only 1 side of sink
Comments (10)I don't know how well these formats come through. Not sure if I could attach a pdf here so I took some screenshots. Added details are. - This doesn't show the counter tops. Intent is to have overhand on the back of the island and the top edge for seating. - Where the kitchen ends there by the fridge there is a small 30 in partition. I had thought of taking that out and encroaching a bit into the living space. However I punched a whole in the drywall and found a steel beam that sticks out about 1/2 from the main wall that is hidden in the partition. Decided to not deal with that for now. - Doors on the wall behind the island are for a 1/2 bath and a small pantry. - Currently DW is in the island but I planned on moving it and then capping / removing / hiding the plumbing there. The way it is now it wastes a ton of space in the island and reduces the storage there significantly. - Existing layout actually has a corner and on the back wall is the range. I find it totally unusable space so I figured among limited options I may as well get rid of that and make up for it in more efficient use and larger island. I general I have no idea what I am doing with this stuff. But on the other hand when I try figure out how to hire someone it seems like the target market is for major, full service 30-50k kitchens. This is a small urban town house so it doesn't have much space for that and I don't think going crazy would be good for resale because that would play to buyers in the next bracket up that would buy a better / newer overall property. But I do want to make it work better for me to live in for awhile. Typical cooking would be for 1, maybe 2. I wouldn't see the place ever being expected to be used for large dinner parties or anything. Typical inhabitants would be a couple alone or a couple with a small child....See MorePinebaron
