Large cool pink or purple disease resistant rose?

last modified: 8 years ago

I have a friend with a very sunny south west exposure site looking for a large rose or group of roses fill an 8 to 10 ft high space by 5 ft deep and 8 ft wide next to a set of stairs for a deck. I think a tall rose bush that would be visible behind the railing of the deck would be nice. She likes bright pink, cool pink, magenta, purple or even red. Does not like pale pink. Vigor, repeat and resistance to blackspot is important, fragrance is not as much.

We are Maryland 7B. Thank you.

Spirit Of Freedom sounds like it might be fitting. Sometimes it looks medium pink in photos, but its more of a cool pink/lavender pink. Its got scrumptious blooms and wonderful disease resistance. Its also vigorous on its own roots.

The pics on help me find are more accurate. Its more purplish pink, not warm pink. It has a lovely fragrance too.

Very pretty and to my taste as far as soft pink, and bloom form but I think it SOF is not bright enough for her and too short to be seen over the deck which is 4 ft off the ground.

I was thinking of Mrs BR Cant. Anyone in Maryland grow this rose?

Frontenac, Jens Munk or some other rugosa.

SoFlo, do you have it own root in a pot or in the ground?

I have two own root in the ground and one on fortuniana also in the ground (from k&m). All are in highly amended soil.

Huntington Rose is very pretty cool pink. I'm doubtful about Mrs. B.R.Cant there. Maybe Christopher knows.

You could try Ascot a wine red. If it grows like my two have done, it will fill the space by itself. This rose is a liberal bloomer, resistant to heat, and very cold hardy. I grow two, and the larger one, which I don't prune as much, is close to 10 feet tall and very wide. Roses in this desert area don't get fungal diseases, so I can't comment on that. Ascot is available from Palatine Roses. Diane

    Diane,

Just wow! Those pics don't just make me want to get an Ascot, they make me want to move to Boise!

Diane - !!!! - I find it hard to believe that you can get that look from a rose!! Mine here are sooooo much smaller with soooo much fewer roses. That's just incredible!! SWOON!!!! How is the fragrance? I imagine there's not much. But who cares when you can get THAT!!

How about Lavender Crush? It's purple in spring, magenta in summer, with an interesting white reverse. Super disease resistant and tough as nails...not one blemished leaf and I live in blackspot paradise. Very vigorous, mine is 3 months old and 5ft, I have no doubt it'll reach it's stated 8 ft. Heavy perfume like old rose and citrus fragrance.

Here are spring blooms shortly after planting (sorry they're past peak, but you get the idea of color)

    Here's summer:

Sorry for the double post, those Ascot pics made me forget I actually had a suggestion of my own!

BenT - those are the same roses?? If so, that's an incredible difference between spring and summer. I'm amazed!

    Carol

That happens with Diane's Ascot pictures. We understand.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Please do keep them coming. My main concern is that I want to find something tall that wont just bloom at the top. Ascot looks like it fits the bill.

You might create a new post and ask mid-Atlantic growers about Ascot's resistance. Checked hmf and there are no mentions that it is resistant.

Dang it, now I need an area for Ascot, apparentry a huge area. I guess I could take out my blue spruce or knock down the garage let's see where else could I put one ? LOL

Ben , your lavender crush is really cool I love the color difference and the size oh my goodness sounds like it gets really big too.

Thanks SoFl Rose, I have been debating about just sticking some of my own root Austins in the ground because many like Tess, Lilian A, Golden Celeb, and The Ingenious Mr Fairchild, roots are all growing into the ground through their pots anyways lol. So its kinda the same thing? lol

    Wow, love that Ascot, Diane.

Sultry, I have Teasing Georgia in the ground and even though its only been 1.5 years, shes growing as a climber and has had one large flush. I'm really pleased with it. I have two actually, the other is in a raised bed. I didn't realize it would want to climb so now I'm thinking of moving it to grow over an arbor. I really like it. I also grow Heritage on its own roots with decent performance, but she's happier and has a much nicer habit on Fortuniana. I find only the really robust ones do well on their own roots. Like Spirit of freedom, T Georg., Maybe Abe Darby, but I haven't tried. Wedgwood Rose has done pretty well as well. I also grow many of the koredes roses on their own roots in the ground. So far I've had luck with Fiji, Roxy Vigorosa, Roxanne Veranda, Lavender Veranda, Cream Veranda, Brilliant Veranda, Bordeaux, Tupelo Honey, Plum Perfect, Poseidon, Honey Moon (climber), Lion's FT, Elegant FT (this one gets huge!), First Crush, and Earth Angel. EA being a particularly good grower in our climate.

I've recently planted a few other Kordes that have been slow to take off, but still seem promising because of their health. Summer Memories, Floral FT, Savannah, and Solero Vigorosa and Out Of Rosenheim. But these were all planted this past spring.

The only ones I have not had luck with in the ground were Sunbeam Veranda and Irene Watts (an older kordes). Mind you, it takes a few years for nematodes to do their damage, so this may all change by 2020, but so far so good. And I've been enjoying most of these roses for 2 years or more.

I also grow a few others on their own roots that have been aroudn a while and show no signs of stopping: Eden, Nahema, Dames De Chennonceau, Duchess De Brabant (this one is huge and very happy). A new one I recently aquired from Cool Roses called Barbara Louise looks extremely promising. As well as Maggie and Vincent Godsiff is also great on its own roots. Always blooming!

Keep in mind most of these are in highly amended soil, usually in RAISED beds with brought in soil and/or the entire bed is amended. :)

Rose Petals Nursery and Angel Gardens, both here in Fl, can give you more lists of roses that do well here on their own roots as well. I hear Graham Thomas does too, but mine gets too much BS to thrive, i think.

Love these choices. Not sure if Vineyard Song or Maggie is large enough. What about Parade? HMF says the fragrance is light, but my first blooms are all fragrant rose. If fragrance isn't important, look at Florentina.

Oh, Pat, Pat, Pat!!! What an exquisite rose (last picture is phenomenal) - and to have such a large bush with soooo many flowers - just amazing! :)

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. The 5 ft depth is not critical since the rose could extend beyond the stairs. So Mrs BR Cant is still in the running especially with pat's photos.

Barbarag thank you from reminding me to check on Ascot's disease resistance in my area.

Florentina looks promising but I dont think my friend will have the time to train a climber so a free standing bush is better. Duchesse de Brabant is lovely but too pale pink for my friend. Vincent is bright pink but a bit short.

Hi, totoro, just thought I'd link to my recent thread on a mature Florentina. It can definitely be grown as a freestanding bush. The specimen shown has only a small metal support that no longer serves any function as far as I could tell. http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/4716601/florentina-frenzy

I have a brand new Florentina as well and it's going crazy. Not sure how I can even trellis it. I have the back half of it kind of winding on a trellis but it is so bushy and so thick I'm not sure what to do with the front half. But I agree that florentina could be a great choice that would work well in your space

Seil and Lilyfinch, How tall and wide do FR and Q get for you? I've considered FR since last year, but don't yet have a bed for her, and I'm currently debating putting Q from ARE in a bed with a NFacing wall (although it will receive sun almost all day), instead of Sugar Moon. Sorry to hijack, but someone else might want to know, too. : )

Also, everyone says Q is a strong growing plant, but mine is the wimpiest of the lot. She's just a baby, so I'm hoping she'll outgrow it.

Seil, your Quietness is so lovely. I love that color but it is too pale for my friend.

Lilyfinch, FR sounds like a great rose and is the right color for my friend, but i was looking for something taller than 5-6 ft.

    Vv, everyone's questions are welcome.
