Field Trip! Portland International Test Rose Garden (Picture Heavy)

I visit Portland, OR every year in late June to celebrate my Father-In-Law's birthday. This year was the most amazing display of roses at Washington Park (ITRG) that I've ever seen. It was as if every plant was blooming. There was a bit of construction going on to build a handicap access ramp but it was a spectacular visit. This year is the Centennial celebration of the Gardens. I highly recommend visiting if you're in the area.

These are the roses that impressed me the most:

Big Momma

Apricots n' Cream

Candy Spelling

Classic Women (last year there was one bloom - for real)

Coretta Scott King

Darcey Bussell

So beautiful. I can only imagine smelling and seeing all of these. That Apricot 'N Cream is scrumptious.

For all those who are lovers of Eden... this was breathtaking.
    Lava Flow

    Crazy good display!

Guy de Maupassant - Every time I visit this is what GdM looks like! (For those of you disappointed in this rose, here's what it can/could be!) Even mine doesn't look like this. Amazing!!

So many gorgeous roses, Big Momma over the Moon , and October fest are some favorite.

What a treat to get to go visit the gardens. Thank you for sharing .

Now THAT is a rose garden... Columbus Garden of Roses take note! : ) Seriously, If I knew I could catch it just right I'd book my ticket now. I'm with you, Desertgarden, those pics of Darcey give me hope mine will look like that when they grow up now that they have been moved to full sun. If they do I may swap them out for my Dark Desires, which I love, but remain solidly red with none of the purpley tone others' possess. They're also very tall and gangly for the space. As a newbie I missed the memo on HT growth.

What do you use to take pics? Yours are outstanding. What a service you've provided, especially for those in this general area. I wonder about their care regiment to have such perfection. Stunning.

Vaporvac, I use a Nikon D5000. Most were taken with the Auto setting (no flash). Some in Programmed Auto settings. Also, most are adjusted in Photoshop for cropping or crooked photos and some midtones were adjusted.

So beautiful, what an amazing sight! Great photography! Thank you for sharing.

Wonderful--but I keep wondering how much spraying they have to engage in.

    Beautiful! Thank you for posting!

Thanks everyone!! I'm really glad everyone enjoyed it.

Kate, I wonder the same thing. I wonder if there's access to the programs. I know they sell the fertilizer they use - my brother-in-law uses it, but I wonder about the whole rose care program.

Thank you for posting these wonderful pictures! Seeing roses so healthy and floriferous keeps my inspired while I'm in the phase of planting my new rose garden, which seems like a sea of sticks and twigs :))

Thank you again for these glimpses of one spectacular rose garden--and your photos do it justice. That last exquisite nosegay of Sally Holmes probably affected me as much as anything, but the size of the Over the Moon bloom was something else. I keep asking myself, why haven't I visited this garden, given how many times I've been to Portland over the course of my lifetime? So now, the test garden is at the top of my bucket list. Thank you. How pretty! I'm a little disappointed because I was going to go there tomorrow during the morning of the 4th for my birthday, but I'm sick with a summer cold. I will just have to wait to see the garden this year and also see if those stairs up the entire mountainside are still there. My favorite spot is the fountain area with the pergola, and the huge hill my brother and I would roll down when we were kids haha! I remember playing hide and seek in that test garden thinking it was a maze of roses in my childlike eyes. Thanks for bringing back memories!

Thank you! Liked seeing the entrance.

Love 'Apricots n' Cream'. As pretty faded as when fresh. 'Big Momma' looks much prettier than at HMF. Lovely pictures.

Diane, I just measured my hand… that bloom on Over the Moon was over 6 inches in diameter! I finally looked on HMF to see Sally Homes. At the
base of the plant were two name plates so I wasn’t sure.

I think you’d really enjoy seeing this garden. And, of course, I’d
like to see photos of your visit!

Va Joh, I’m so sorry you’re sick!! That’s the worst. I love
hearing about your childhood adventures in Washington Park and the “exercise
stairs.” I hope you get well soon, get a chance to visit the rose gardens and
that you're having a Happy Birthday!!!

Dave, aren’t you the person that likes Eden? I was thinking
about all Eden lovers on GW when I saw that display. There are several Eden’s at the
gardens and they have to be 15-20’ tall. Here’s a photo with a person (that I don’t
    know) in it for scale.

    Happy 4th of July!

Towandaaz, I like them all. Everything is so spectacularly healthy, thriving, and beautifully huge blooms. Is climate/location the key to growing these beauties?

Kentucky_Rose, I think so. Every year I've visited the garden has looked pretty good. They also had a lot of rain this year and the garden is tended to by a boatload of volunteers. I also could see some good compost manure at the base of the plants. As mentioned above, we don't know what kind of fungicide/pesticide program they may use but everything looks really good.

I stopped visiting the PDX garden when they culled all of the OGRs from the collection and turned it into what is essentially an "AARS garden". I don't feel as if I've missed much.

I was afraid of that, Paul.

Yes, Towandaaz, I love Eden!!! Your pics of Eden are incredible! It amazes me that they were able to pillar Eden as her canes are not that flexible. Also, the number of blooms on her is astounding - as with the other roses there!
