Arranging a collection of prints

I have 12 Godey Fashion prints in a variety of frames and have three walls on which to hang them. How do I do this?

Raising the mirror instead of lowering the shades is another good idea - just so you don't raise it too high off the top of the dresser. 4" tops - or it will seem like it is floating up there and not grouping with the dresser.

Rug sizes and shapes. Runners work in spots like along side the bed. And, when you have a space on the floor that is, for instance, between a dresser and the foot of the bed that is more rectangular, a rectangular shape works best. Now, you can certainly put a shorter runner in front of the dresser - it is totally up to you. This is one of the times you might want to do a little trial and error. The feet of furniture does not have to be on the rug. Lay down a tacky rug underlayment to keep the rug from slipping.

Love the examples of new bedding sent to you above! We have not addressed this but If you are considering new bedding, these examples are great because they are all without or with subtle patterns. Choose simple, plain but dressier bedding if you choose patterned rugs. If you find that you like the shag rugs, you can find bedding in a pattern that will work with those.

Yes, I would use the rug. I like the dark blue to add to the warm room. Add some navy pillows on the bed as well as lighter blue pillows

Thanks LB! There is a little of the wall color in the carpet and some lovely green like some of the clothing in the prints. THANK you for watching this post! I will be back at finishing this room since the chili pepper rug is gone!

-- Oh, my gosh! Who gets free orientals? Lucky you - and I think it looks like a great fit! Must see it in the room to make sure but never say "no" to something like this! If it doesn't work here, it might work somewhere at sometime down the line. It looks like it would be great with all of your prints color, and style wise too.

Been off line with tech troubles for the last month [ARGH!] and it is great to be back!

Hi there! Was out your way looking at colleges (Wisconsin), burr was it cold. Does picture this picture help? Rug is 9 x 12 and was the product of a divorce. Does have some of the wall color and a light green that works with many of prints. Do you need more pictures?

-- Well, I am so happy for you and your success with pulling this room together! No, I do not want more pictures - I want to pay a visit and sit in there with your adorable pooch and take it all in! ! !

It takes some thought and luck to get the look you have in your mind's eye and you worked hard and got lucky with all of it! Bravo! It's been a pleasure for me!

Wisconsin? The temps were, what, in the 50s? We here in MN would call that nice and warm for a fall day! I hope the fall colors were out in full force for your visit!

Beautiful colors in this swatch and I agree with LB Interiors - a little too rustic with your prints and oriental rug. Find an old, pastel color that is in the rug and/or prints in an unpatterned fabric similar to silk, taffeta, some polyesters. Do not worry about matching these colors exactly. But they should coordinate.

Be sure to make the panels full - 2.5 to 3 times the width of the window frame. You have room to extend the rods wider than the windows. Add off-white sheers if you like. Get an extra panel to make shams or pillows for the chair. Tie the panels back for a different look. Add tassles to the edges of the drapes or pillows.
On the hunt for curtains, in hopes for tie top, but see so many grommet tops? And brass rods of course.
Should I do accent pillows for chaise and bed yet. Thinking that they will depend on curtain color a bit.
And then there is the duvet color . It is so much like the walls, but a nice sheen to it, does this work? I keep hearing LB talk about warm vs cool colors . With the new rug walls and duvet I have a lot of warm!
I am sure LB and Sandi noticed the nightstand lamps. As poor a choice as the chilli pepper rug? A Lenox base, with a black silk shade . Help!
And last question for today.... I have a wool coverlet woven in 1853, navy and cream. Now that there is navy in the rug should I drag it out of the attic and sling over the chaise? Or leave we enough alone?

Hi, I think navy will co-ordinate well. No black shades on the lamps. Navy will work. Add some midtone blues (lighter color than navy but not pale pastel blues) to the room. Blues are cool colors. You could paint the room a pale blue.

-- The lamp bases are good! However, the black shades are too contemporary and harsh for your space. If you think about the focus of your room, it is on women's clothing. So, I would suggest a curvier shade in cream.

If you ever want to change the base, find one that is curvier as well. This lamp stuff is found at Target on line.

Your antique coverlet sounds wonderful! Fold it at the foot of the bed or try it, as you mentioned, gently toss it on the chaise. Lucky you!
The coverlet is either 1835 or 1853 ..... ? Look at the dates woven into the corner. If you read clock wise it's 1835

-- Way to go! Shades look fresh and appropriate for the grouping.

Think about adding some color with sheets and folding your duvet back to reveal them. This would be a great way to add a cool color - If you come across a great deal on a set, pick it up and give it a try. Old, dusty blue, sage, rose, [even navy blue from the throw], etc., peeking out under the duvet will change the room up - giving you more color on that wall. Yet another trial and error!

Remember other fabrics used in the gowns, like velvet & satin, that can be/should be used in throw pillows. A monogrammed pillow or 2 would be amazing on the bed. Maybe using navy velvet with cream initials [to mirror your antique throw]? Do you or anyone you know, sew? Pillows are so easy to make.

You will of course notice that I have added another oriental! I was re reading the comments about layout and mixing orientals together and went to the basement for this old treasure. Not sure if you can see colors well, they are very similar. Now my 17 x 13 room has an 11x 8 rug and a 7.5 x 4 rug

WOW! I think we have just found the designer's basement from heaven ! ! ! Another old rug? How great is this discovery? So happy for you! Looks nice with your other rug.

This painting is very "old master" and might work here in a more ornate frame. The colors are good for sure. Hang it up, live with it for a little while and see what you think. Ornate frames can be found at thrift shops, flea markets, etc.

The monogrammed pillow is pretty deco - angular. Think about something more in keeping with your prints. Google "antique monograms" to see what I mean if you want to.

-- So, this fabric is for draperies? It is a beautiful color for sure. Wondering if it is a little too "fresh" compared to the blues in your prints, which look "older". If you can visualize a rather large amount of this color in your room, that would help. Remember to add your rugs into this picture. Is this color close to a blue in your rugs? These 2 elements - draperies & rugs - loom large in a room and should be well coordinated. A light, grayed-down, steel blue might be better with your prints and rugs. Can you buy 1 yard [or so] and try it in the room? Hard to say without seeing it in the room.

Hint: You have been so successful pulling this room together, this really isn't the time to do something that "almost" works. Get a sample of the fabric and try it out. . .

    -- Hi!
These drapes look pretty good color-wise and appropriate with your prints! A little dressier and they pick up the light blue in the rug. Go ahead and try them - it's the best way to see how they fit in.

Sometimes, the finishing touches do cost more than we would like but might haunt you if you don't at least try them in the room.

Bottom line- they would look really nice and they would pull everything together!

Making slower progress than I would like, but when I saw this I got inspired again! The frame is a funny metallic, silver/ gold and modern but I like it
  • 11 years ago
And 27" square, will it work over my chaise?
Meaning the floral would replace the small framed botanical and would be centered over the chaise

-- mamaysek, you are making progress and there are no rules re: how long you have before your room has to be finished!

Thanks for including your pooch in the shot! Always fun to see pets being involved and helping out!

Your draperies look beautiful and really finish the windows nicely.

Now, about your floral artwork - I say, try it. It's the best way to help decide. Is there a mate to it - you have the wall space for a pair. You will probably have to remove the antique print that is there now since they might not coordinate. You might also want to replace the contemporary frame with one more in keeping with your gallery wall. Maybe find one at a thrift shop. Just make sure that the glass is in the frame to avoid the hassle of another trip to have a piece cut. It's also ok if the frame has a little bit of wear - totally appropriate for a vintage look. And, adding a matt would also make the unit larger, which you could use on that wall.

This print is a strong image that will add a nice amount of blue to that corner. You could center it on the wall and if you can find a mate for it, hang them both in a horizontal line, centered above the chaise and end table. Still need to change the modern frames.

You know this but I will mention it just the same. The candlestick holder would move to the right side of the end table.

I like your new find. I think it is too large over the end table.
It may work best over the bed and place the two at the bed stacked over the end table.

Another thought. Swivel the chaise more to the left.
Move the end table lengthwise to the right side of the chaise, almost touching each other. Use it as an end table that groups with the chaise arm. Drawer facing out. Close together.
No end table agaist that wall.
Place the new art in the center of the entire wall from corner of walls to the edge of the drapes.
No other art on the wall.
For the art height placement, hang art with the center of art about 62" from the floor.

If you are asking me the above ? ..... I was thinking using the floral centered above the bed. Move the two botanicals 'stacked' over the nightstand.

I think I would like to see the chaise swiveled slightly and the end table next to the chaise lengthwise and not against the wall. Then the floral in center of the chaise wall.

Had these tie backs laying around but can't figure out how to use them. I have 1.5 yds width per panel (skimpy) , but when I pull them back it looks just too narrow. ny tricks on how to use and maintain illusion of fullness?

    Working on brass rods.....

    - mamaysek, two questions . .

Do you still have the panels shown below?
What is the style of the tops of your new blue panels?

Thinking you can combine them at the windows for fullness. The natural panels in the center with the blue ones on the edges. If the treatment of the tops is different, use the appropriate rods for them, The blue ones should dominate and be hung on the outside o the natural ones. If the tops are both grommeted, hang them on the same rod.

Or, if you happen to have sheers, you could hang the blue ones over sheers.

As far as the tie backs, pull the natural panels to the center and spread out, bring the blue panels up to them and spread them out to the ends of the rod. Now you have blue panels on the outside edges of the window and the neutral ones in the center.

Then, secure the tie back to the wall, about 2" out from the window frame. This is so that the out side edge of the panel falls straight down from the top of the window frame. Adjust the panels within the tieback so it looks like the blue and natural panels are stitched together. Sort of mimic the folds/pleats at the top. You might have to pin the tieback to the panel on the front edge to keep it from slipping down. Tiebacks can get heavy and slide down the center front edges.

Hanging the blue and natural panels together will almost double the fullness of your drapes. . . Hope it works out!

Yes! I have panels, but it was just a pair. Sounds like I should find a couple of neutral pairs and voila! Super great idea

The panels are all grommet topped, so that will not be an issue. (Working on a budget, can you tell?)

I must say at since we started this project I spend way more time in my room as a retreat. Reading on my chaise and sipping my tea is wonderful. A new cozy throw would be nice! (Color?)

As far as a throw goes, find a color in the rug and go with that. You have enough blue in your room now, so look for another color for a change. Also one that as a lot of texture!
