HELP! Awful Bedroom Carpet Color Picked by Landlord

Hello!

This is a repost with more details and pictures as requested because I couldn't find an edit post option. Sorry! I am knew to this.

Original: Designers! I'm in need of tremendous help to find colors (wall colors, bed sheets, rugs, etc) that match with my new 1980s ash brown carpet my landlord picked out. I have very dark furniture (dark brown/black) and white and gray curtains that must remain. Any suggestions?!?! Thank you

Edit: Hello! Thank you for the quick responses. Sorry I wasn't specific enough. This is for my bedroom. I am going for a modern minimalist theme. I had to disassemble my bedframe for the carpet installation. My furniture which includes 2 of the same tables, a nightstand, and a 6ft mirror are the same color as my headboard and bed frame. In addition, I have some black/white photos and floating shelf arrangements I'd like to keep too. I attached more photos of the items I described. I am struggling to find a wall color and rugs/accessories to mask/mute the carpet color and overall tie everything in the room together. PS. What kind of baseboard should I go for too? Thank you!

Wow! Thank you groveraxle. Very impressive editing skills :) If this were reddit, I'd up vote you!

That gives me a much better idea. I'm thinking of having the room painted either a light gray or light tan and a matching gray/tan area rug. I'll definitely look for some bed sets similar to yours suggested.

Interesting, when I look at the top of this page I see:

When I go to William's activity page I see one post in dilemma and one post in home decorating. I wonder if it depends on how you are logged in.

The paint color will need to have the same undertone as the carpet if you're looking for it to blend nice. Looks like the undertone is red/pink. (I have similar color carpet) I would stay away from yellows and orange undertones because it will make the carpet color appear dirty and clash. Check out BM Patience and BM Muslin.

Your bedding will also need to relate with undertones. Creams, white, blues, reds are all colors that would work. Head over to Maria Killam's blog and look around about undertones and pink/pink beige undertones. Lots of good information.

Can you take a close up photo of your trim? Your baseboard should relate to the style of your trim and the rest of the house.

Do you have any inspiration photos that you can relate to your space? I find that I absolutely need to have a clean goal/inspiration fabric - something I'm aiming for or I end up purchasing things that I don't like long term.

Instead of spending $$$ to match something you do not like, cover it with an area rug and get things you like.

DF did it an apartment, which made the floor so comfortable to walk on, and it protected the underlying carpet so well - she got her entire deposit back, landlord said, "for keeping the carpet in such good shape and so clean." She just smiled and never mentioned the area rug.

Sheeisback is right, you'll never have peace between that yellow wall color and the taupe carpet. Pick a neutral greyish taupe wall color with pink or purple undertones and many of your issues will disappear.

This is a great article on what to do with taupe

My first thought was also adding an area rug but then I worried about the mechanics of it. Will the doors and closet stick because of the added height? Will the strip of clashing brown around the edges of the room look worse than trying to incorporate the rug color with his tastes? I don't know.

Wow thank you for all the feedback! I took some more far away photos as possible. It's still quite difficult to get the whole room in the picture. Also, I apologize for the clutter.

I looked into some paints. To play it safe, I think SW Agreeable Gray would be the best for my walls. What do you think? I read it has some taupe in it, which in my mind would go well because my carpet is called "taupe whisper".

I really like the first bedding set groveraxle posted! Something about it makes the carpet disappear. I think you should buy the bedding first and pull a shade from there for the walls.

I'd go with a brown/taupe/gray wall color, or maybe even quite dark, possibly with some lighter rug.

Take a look at BM smokey taupe, it's a gray beige and so lovely. It will look beautiful.

I'd suggest to go to a paint store (ideally with a piece of the carpet), look at those color stripes that have the same color but in different degrees of lightness. Find the one that corresponds to your carpet and then go up in lightness

Note though that the dark colors are great, some landlords will draw a firm line against dark paint. Harder they think to cover over after you leave. Just something to enquire about.

Make the landlord replace your baseboard. Try Benjamin Moore smokey taupe.

Update: So I kinda played around with SW samples today. The colors from left to right are perfect greige, versatile gray, agreeable gray, mega greige, and tony taupe. I really do like the smokey taupe by BM however SW is offering 40% off all paints even their high end line. Do you know perhaps SW's equivalent to BM's smokey taupe?

Here are some photos under different light settings (yellow light, yellow with white light, and white light in order from top to bottom)

My landlord is an a** He said he'd either put the baseboards back on himself or have it painted over. I'm like you can't paint over the cracks and holes that were left from yanking the baseboards out!! I refused his offer to put the baseboards back on himself because he did that to my roommate's room and butchered it. It was all uneven and left a lot of gaps between the baseboard and the wall. At this point, I've been frustrated with my landlord and don't care spending the extra dollars. I have enough stress to deal with in medical school and if it requires spending extra to make my study/bedroom to look nice then so be it. Thank you for all the help!!!

I like agreeable gray. However, I still recommend purchasing the bedding from West Elm first to be sure it's the best match.

Here are pieces of carpet next to your paint samples:

On my phone, I'd say perfect greige, or Agreeable Gray, one of my favorite colors (maybe Tony taupe).

I guess it depends how dark you want to go. AG is relatively light and changes with the light throughout the day.

Go to Ikea and get a duvet cover and insert.

I had replied to your first post and still suggest white or a very light grey, especially after seeing all of the pics above re: paint colors, rug choices and bedding ---- you referenced modern minimalist, which none are. If you like the idea of grey, you could paint the wall behind the bed the same color as your drapes. Hope the first picture helps in regards to outcome vs a fresher more youthful/minimal look of the second picture - which still could be achieved with your dark furniture. In regards to bedding, suggest mixing and matching vs "bed in a bag" for more of a personal/creative feel - see last picture. Look at lots of inspiration pictures before you move forward with bedding and paint. Good luck with med school; I know how much work it involves.

I'd forget about getting a carpet. As someone mentioned above, most of the carpet will be covered with furniture, books, etc. The eye won't be drawn to the floor, but rather the bedding. I'd find a comforter that incorporates shades of brown and gray and paint the walls one of the colors in the comforter. Best of luck in medical school.

Baseboard reinstalled and agreeable gray going on. I think it looks much better. What do y'all think? Thanks so much for the help! Awesome community here.

    Looks great!

    Love it!

    Very nice!

Agreeable gray looks great. So does the baseboard.

    Yay!

Still like the blue and brown. Walls beach glass looks good
  • 8 years ago

You do realize that he is in the middle of painting?

That looks so good! Great choice.

Sorry looks great, you could still add blue in your bedding etc lol

    Hm, wrong brown...

I really like this one; have it for two different beds; it's very crisp cotton.

    Or some linen.

    Also, check H&M.

    Hey!

    Final Update (for now...)

Thank you for all the help. I just finished laying out my new room. It's super late so the lighting isn't that good and the gray doesn't really look like the photos. I'll probably switch bed sets later down the road. Hope y'all enjoy!

PS. I know I need to step up my pillow game and learn how to lay a bed out more aesthetically. Ignore the hospital desk that I use to study on bed haha :)

Wow, what an improvement! Looks great!

Nice work, William. The paint color looks perfect from here. And the carpet is barely noticeable.

    Looks great!

    Great job!

    Power of paint. Looks great!

Now get at least one pillow in the color of your undergrad college or med school.

It looks great but I am most impressed by how quickly you finished everything! It would take me four days just to pick a paint color. Good luck with school.

hijack---- williamyang, how stable on your carpet is that TV stand you included in your photos Friday of last week? I'm considering one, but am concerned about it wobbling on carpet. Thank you!

You're a fast mover! I think the paint looks great and has taken the clash out of the room. It's much more peaceful now with the new paint color as well!

delilah66 it's actually a monitor stand I constructed out of a speaker stand haha. Although my monitor is fairly big for a computer monitor (29'') it's actually very slim and light so thats why the stand can hold it I think.

I does wobble a little only if u bump it. Otherwise for me it is fine.

Yea I wanted to get this project done ASAP so I can get back to studying : )

Thank you, William. I'd love to have a doc with style like yours!

You should be proud of yourself for creating such a nice room. I'm impressed, best of luck in your future.
