New J&P roses look nothing like their pictures, what is going on?

Hello and thank you for reading! I am seriously disappointed in my new addition from J&P website and wonder if they have sent different rose varieties to me.

This spring I ordered new introduction Spice It Up, Surreal and Tournament of Roses as bare roots. They all took off with different vigor, and had their first blooms, but neither look like their pictures on JP website I ordered from. The rose labelled "Surreal" is a beautiful warm pink, light and slightly creamy colored in the middle, one very full bloom per stem, fade quickly to creamy pink with some pale reddish splashes. Not even close to bright orange-red-pink colors seen on JP pictures, or other pictures of this rose I googled. Plant labelled Tournament of Roses is bright white with thin mauve edge (!), large and pretty, one bloom per stem. So, it is nothing like uniform coral pink TOR should be (also based on Google images and rose description). Plant labelled Spice It Up is pink indeed and uniformly fades to nice pale pink much lighter that on JP pictures, though. I like the new "wrong" roses, but they scramble the color scheme I was after.

So, I am wondering if my soil affects rose bloom colors so much, or JP messed up pretty bad? For reference, I also received Heirloom HT rose from JP in the same order and that one blooms exactly as its picture on JP web, also very fragrant. Thank you!

I have Tournament of Roses and it is a pinkie coral

I wonder what is going on

I get that sometimes and most of the times for me it seems roses start out different texture different color on the very first blooms and then they kind of get to be what they're supposed to be down the road. But I don't know about Tournament of Roses that sounds really off color

Thank you for confirming the color of your TOR, Kristine. I will see how mine progress in the season, although I cannot even imaging it transforming so much to become the color it is supposed to be. Waiting for more blooms :)

Wow Beth, your Surreal makes me want to add it to next years list.

Beth, thank you for posting your amazing roses! A pleasure to look at and very informative for me.

When buying, I hoped for Surreal be just as bright as yours and grow next to my Easy Does It I absolutely love, but the plant labeled as Surreal is not even close in color intensity or even shade! I had just two flowers on it and now impatiently waiting for next bud to develop. My Tournament of Roses is definitely something different, flowers look similar to Cherry Parfait pictured on JP website, so it is definitely a mistake on JP part. My Spice It Up looks similar to yours, actually. I am not impressed by bloom color, size, and shape, but like plant vigor and the long-lasting blooms. Spice It Up also seem to be continuously blooming, new buds form fast.

Thank you again for taking your time answering my question.

Did you get these roses directly from J&P? Do you have any pics of the blooms? I'd like to see what they look like.

Beth!!! - That Surreal is surreal (lame, I know.) :) Honestly, what a gorgeous rose - the color is so intense!! Swooon!!

Surreal is a stunner. As for your new roses and not looking like they do online. They need time to adjust. New plant blooms often do not look like the established rose buds. It can take a few bloom cycles to see an accurate bloom. Weather can greatly affect your blooms too. Hot weather can make smaller blooms, hot full sun can dramatically bleach out your colours. Especially on a new rose with a small root system. Whereas, cool wet weather can keep a rose bloom colours very bright or rich. Sometimes you also just get mismarked roses.

That is very true about blooms not being an accurate color at first I am living proof of that one. My out of rosenheim started out a very pale watermelon color and with each subsequent Bloom they appear to be getting darker and darker closer to the red that I was hoping for.

So don't worry too much at first . Give your roses a chance and see what they're going to do they may just be building up a little bit of steam and getting root system.

I sure hope you ended up with Tournament of Roses. It was not one I purchased or would have purchased but it was here in this home when we bought it and I'm telling you it never stops blooming huge clusters of blooms it is the most amazing Rose I have ever grown.

Thank you all who responded, you are so supportive and enthusiastic about roses! I have been browsing this forum for a few years since I began growing roses in my Midwest garden, but this was the first time I actually posted a question, and your input was a terrific help.

bethnorcal9, I will post a picture later today, and yes I got them directly from JP via on-line order.

Amazing Tournament of Roses, Kristine, so beautiful and healthy! Mine is definitely mislabeled as HalloBlondie suggested.

Weathering flower on the rose marked as Tournament of Rose by JP. Must be mislabeled.

Definitely mis-labeled. That's really unusual for J&P. Not sure what it could be tho. A bud and earlier stage of bloom would help maybe. Keep us posted.

Thank you, Beth! I will follow up with pictures when new buds mature :)

Found this rose on JP website, so maybe this is what it is, but seem to have more petals than mine http://www.jacksonandperkins.com/soft-whisper-hybrid-tea-rose/p/v1783/
