How to reduce/prevent exterior paint pigment fade?

I'm looking for proven products and additives that will reduce/prevent paint pigment fade on exteriors, especially in pigment rich colors like black, reds, purples, etc. The sun is brutal here in the southwest and we want to steer clear of overused brown pigments.

There are a lot of paint manufacturers that claim their paints have better pigments and have less fading. The three main colors that fade the fastest are typically Red, Yellow and Blue. Black should not fade as fast. If you are in the Southwest, I would not put black on too many surfaces...as it will make your home and surface very hot!

Benjamin Moore Aura and Sherwin Williams Duration or Emerald color line should have the better pigments...thought each manufacturer has their top of the lines.

Sometimes the Ceramic based based paints boast better color retention. Yet, in all of our years of painting in the southwest, we've never seen the amazing super paint that is perfect. I guess that is what keeps us in business painting. The higher the acrylic and pigments the better. Hope this helps.

Thx CBP. We used a ceramic paint that fades in six months! After repainting a couple times, we are done with that (curry color that has red and green pigments). We want to change from stucco to other materials and reduce the maintenance in the paint department. Sounds like what you've tried so far hasn't provided long lasting results?

We've tried just about everything! We've had paint reps pitch their products to us for 30 years...and tried it all. If you have a very dark color or have colors with a lot of the primary colors, it will fade. Some ceramic paint has done ok. Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore's products I mentioned are pretty decent too. I have had their paint fade (greens) in 4-5 years...and this was close to the ocean. However, Sherwin Williams did give us free paint when it faded. Because they guaranteed it would not fade. That was Duration. It was a deep, avocado green.

Do you have a few pictures of the color and home? Stucco, is pretty low maintenance...but when you put those medium and dark base colors on it...it will fade.

We used Glidden Exterior on our Arkansas house. Had to replace a piece of siding two years after painting and the paint color still matched.....it seems like a nice product. and this was on the side of the house that got all the afternoon sun.

We live in Arizona, land of the never ending sun. The paint that is highly recommended is Dunne and Edwards. They told our Association that they test the paint for 3 years in the very harsh conditions of California which is equivalent to 9 years on a home. The paint lasts about 8-10 years in our subdivision...hope this helps...

We gave up on paint and gone to steel. No stucco cracks or faded pigments anymore. :) Very happy with it. The last of the paint is on the chimney stack in green. Thanks for everyone’s input.
