I would change the spindles to iron. Add an updated patterned carpet runner to stairs.

You could fairly easily replace the bottom tread with one that's straight with square ends. I'd probably leave it a little wide, buy two Starting Easings and install them over the existing newel posts after installing them inline with the balustrades. Then I'd paint the risers and balusters white. Then you'd have to finish the new stair parts to match the existing.

You can go with a high-contrast look, painting the spindles and rises white, while staining the treads and railing something really dark, like Ebony. That would definitely be more modern and cost much less than replacing the spindles. (Although the iron spindles are also more modern)

I think it's an absolutely gorgeous staircase, and will look especially lovely once hardwoods are installed.

Yes I've had someone come take a look- surprisingly in costs more to stain my existing banister and spindles than to purchase and install new ones!!

It sounds crazy but makes sense since removing all the stain would be very time consuming. That's why I was promoting painting the balusters. You could go darker by having a painter use a brushing stain. I have seen newels and handrails look attractive painted in a contrasting color also.
