Flat roof or pitched roof for modern addition?

We're planning a small guest room addition to our house that will be separate from the main house. We're trying to decide on the roof on whether to make it a flat roof or pitched roof. Both look fine and could go with our house. Like the idea of a flat roof just not sure how water drains off them and if they are more expensive than a regular (pitched angled) roof. We live in Southern CA so it doesn't rain that much but when it does it pours :) Thanks for any help/tips.
