New furniture arrived -- Help with rug & decor!

Our Joybird furniture just arrived this morning and I love it, but am also struggling with the chair color. I'm always drawn to neutrals but we agreed to live on the edge and try out something more bold because our home lacks personality (everything is a shade of gray or brown). I think I'll be okay with the chair fabric after a few days, but I do not want to incorporate too much more brightness into the room. Just enough to make everything cohesive.

***The rug is borrowed from another room so our dogs don't slip** End table is also temporary, and I'm not sure if the agave canvas is too bold there or not. Wall color is SW Mindful Gray.

I'd prefer to have a very neutral rug I think, maybe with a geometric or Moroccan pattern...would something cream and gray work? Please suggest calm rugs for this room! This fall we will be adding trim around the windows and when our budget allows we will get either white cellular shades or some sort of roller shade. Do you think we can also do curtains? How tall should end tables be in relation to arm height?

We also plan to purchase matching sideboards or media consoles to go under the windows (or do built-ins) and will be installing a mantle and tile around the fireplace. Should a narrow console go behind the open side of the sofa where it joins the dining area?

I like this end table for between the chairs:

Love your new furniture but another thing bothers me....your TV is bigger than the black square of your fireplace and hung too high. Not sure there is anything you can do about it, other than put it on the wall where the chairs are and put a chair on each side of the fireplace.

A TV over the fireplace is going to be shaped differently than the opening of the fireplace, but I agree with erinsean that it looks a bit "off" in your photo. Are you planning to add any kind of mantel or fireplace surround? As you can see, the disparity in size and shape is visibly diminished when there's something surrounding the fireplace opening.

Just be sure to get the proper size area rug!

Yes, we will be installing a mantle, trim, and tile around the fireplace. The TV will be lowered some once that is installed. We will not be relocating the TV to a different wall, and while it's a little high right now, it's not uncomfortable for us to watch. We hate really low tvs at media stand height, that is uncomfortable for us. There are code requirements for how high the mantle needs to be depending on the depth we do so that is why the TV is higher right now. Something like this (no shiplap!):

Given the fact you have a lot of blues and grays....MCM chairs and so on. I would look for an area rug which is predominantly off white but with some blue. If you like the moroccan style, I don't see it working as much as I love the styles posted above.

The art, the chairs.... seeing more something that ties in to chairs, art, couch!

    Good luck!

Hmm...those rugs are too bright for me. :( I wouldn't mind incorporating navy, but no more teal/turquoise. The chairs do have a textured weave with navy in it.

Great Lisa.. you probably know more than I... Navy might be better than Moroccan style rugs. Good luck!

I do kind of like the Verve rug from West Elm but it has a lot of teal in it which I want to minimize...less color would be good.

I don't know if I can learn to love the chairs. :( I have 14 days to decide.

Want to ask you a question…could you reposition the sectional?

What if the section that is now up against the two windows had its back to the kitchen and the rest where the blue chairs are now and the blue chairs in front of the window.

It looks as if you can flip it. Not lovin’ the sofa against the windows.

I love the chairs; I hope you can grow to love them, too!

I hear that you don't want much more color in the room, but those chairs are awesome and will feel more at home if you incorporate that beautiful blue (whatever color it is) in small doses throughout the room on rug, sofa pillows, and art. You have a great start.

Lisa, I live in a monochromatic world in my own home, but not in others. So, when seeing the chairs/art I offered up the light gray rug due to the chairs and art keeping it simple. I didn't see Moroccan especially due to the MCM chairs and the art is all.

I'd personally hold off on a rug until you decide on chairs (to keep or not).... the rugs you posted above are great rugs and many other renditions of them out there equally beautiful. However, due with what you have going on... I didn't see them. If you move toward more neutral chairs it will change things a lot with opinions here.

I see you still have the wrapping on the edges of the art. Do you love the art?

I'm seeing tables more as such with the couch and style of chair.

They are West Elm... I don't lean toward nor against West Elm, but happened upon them.

not in brass however... in silver :)

barrowp, thank you for your thoughts. The chairs are giving me anxiety right now when I think about trying to decorate around them. Probably because teal is one of my least favorite colors, though I thought I'd be able to enjoy these because they have a neat textured fabric and look much more interesting in person.

Porter Edun, thank you for your suggestions and help. I wouldn't normally hesitate to do a gray rug but when the walls & sofa are already gray, I think it would be too much to add more...a navy & gray blend may work if it was subtle. I do actually love the art! I've been eyeing it for an entire year and it finally went on sale -- I may hang it in the stairway entry where the white bookcase is (that is also temporary).

Understand, the gray is a lot lighter however, agree. Was just trying to work with the art and the chairs without a completely opposing rug...... however, I hear you on teal color.

Please hold off on a rug until you decide to get new chairs or not.... it's a large purchase and makes a big difference.

    Good luck Lisa!

Yes I will definitely not purchase a rug until I've decided on whether the chairs will stay or go! :) At this point I don't think I'll be keeping them, unless a great rug catches my eye that can incorporate everything together.

JudyG, I will see if my husband will help me rotate the sectional to the other wall. We specifically purchased the size we did so we could put it on either side. Should it float a couple of feet from the wall or almost flush against it? And, should it not extend at all past the wall? If not, it may squish everything together too much in order to make the chairs part of the conversation area but I will try it!

@JudyG Designs, we tried swapping the furniture and it just doesn't work with both chairs (which we need). One of the chairs ends up facing the arm of the sectional rather than being part of the conversation area. When the sectional is along the window wall we can float it back farther than the opposite wall creating a larger space because it doesn't impede on traffic flow.

What a nice room, and I really like what you've done so far. Except (sorry), yet again, TV placement. I'd install the TV in the left, inside wall and arrange from there.

Your fireplace (and its wall) is the dominant architectural element in this room and has great potential to be extremely handsome. Sacrificing the fireplace makes sense when there simply is no other option. Very notably also, when both flames and football are on.... Well...

I don't have a crystal ball, but I strongly suspect that putting the TV over the mantle may not always be as popular as now. Notably, many people are now actually putting it there as if that's where it's "supposed" to go--when there's no compelling need to degrade the fireplace as a feature and elevate the TV in importance literally and otherwise over it. That makes me suspect many decorators in future will be explaining how updating rooms required "correcting" this dated architectural/design faux pas and restoring the fireplace to its intended elegance.

Of course, as you say, you've moved past this decision. On the plus side, your very nice fireplace design could itself move on to feature a painting, mirror, etc., in future should you ever want. Flexibility is a wonderful thing, and you seem to have it.

I like this rug from Crate and Barrel...

These 2 are my favorite that you liked and posted...

The TV is not moving, sorry. We like it above the fireplace where we can see it from the kitchen. We do a lot of casual entertaining and it works best with our lifestyle where it is. We would also have to have blackout shades closed anytime we wanted to watch TV.

I love this rug for this side side of the room:)

What do you all think of this color scheme? Teal (chairs), Navy, Gray (sofa), Mustard, and touches of neutrals like cream/tan (blanket just to show neutrals)? The fabric swatches are to show the gray sofa color, mustard, and cream.

kjoy, I love the last C&B rug you posted! Would that look good with the teal chairs you think?

What about this West Elm sweater wool rug:

    Too bold maybe?

    Bret...I like your color scheme:)

Here is another rug from Crate and Barrel

    Thanks kjoy!

I think I'm going to return the chairs and choose a fabric that suits my personality better. It will stink having to wait another 2 months to get the new chairs but I don't want to have to "try" to make the chairs work. There are so many beautiful neutral rugs and they just don't work with the chairs.

Maybe a style with a little white and blue? It could be really lovely with the couches and chairs you have now.

We are definitely going to replace the chairs...I'll try to post a photo of the fabric we both love (We saw it in person on a chair after we ordered our furniture and felt regret) but it is very hard to photograph.

Dan, I totally agree with you on adding plants & dining room furniture! We will be replacing the dining table and chairs...it's been on our 'to do' list for a couple of years but the stupid thing is so darn sturdy it won't die so until now it's taken a back seat! I think we'll replace it (hopefully) within the next 6 months but it's very expensive due to chairs. We have one of these tables in mind:

We don't have any other decor or plants to layer in the room yet...our entire house is bare just like the family room. :) This Fall we intend to complete the fireplace and built-ins area which will help a lot. You bring up an excellent point about bringing in softer lines, not angular geometric pattern. The metal house decor between the chairs was just to stick something there temporarily but will not be permanent. We dont have any lamps or anything yet! Perhaps I should look for a rug that has a circular pattern or a more solid design that just has tonal change. We are going to buy the matching ottoman for the sofa but if we can fit a small coffee table still I'll go with a circular one, same for between the chairs. I think I'm putting the picture in the hallway area where the white bookcase currently is instead of in the family room.

Here is the fabric we loved in person (it's not for everyone) that we may choose:

It's a heavily textured tweed with navy, light blue, ivory, camel, charcoal, and brown. It's overall blue (classified as such in the swatches, and reads blue in person), and in photos usually appears a blend of charcoal and navy. Joybird said it would look great with our sofa color.

    Very unique...love the texture:)

Thanks...still not 100% sure we'll choose it; I'm still wondering if maybe we choose a couple of accent pillows in that fabric and go with more simple navy chairs but my husband thinks two navy chairs will be too much blue/too heavy in color. We could also go with a cognac or camel leather...but I don't find leather comfortable to sit in and they would be 2x the price.

I'm sorry, but I don't care for the color of the LR chairs; they somehow detract from the elegance of your living room. I would have them in a neutral color that will go with the couch, but perhaps with a more textured material. I would also choose a neutral rug, and I really like the one with the light gray lozenge shapes surrounded by a darker gray color, which has a lot of texture and presence. If the chairs had been a softer blue I think they would have worked, something like the dining chairs above in the picture with the brick wall. I would think very carefully about what colors you really love and introduce them slowly into that room. Perhaps lemon yellow or lime green pillows would be a good place to start. Frankly I like the modern, pristine look of the fireplace as it is now, although I think the TV may be too high for comfortable viewing. My style is very opposite to yours, a sort of English Country with lofts of color and paintings and Chinese porcelain, but I admire the purity of the look that you're starting with, and too much embellishment might just ruin that. I would keep any architectural elements very simple. I wouldn't choose a round coffee table because you have such a large couch, and frankly I like all the rectangular lines in this room. Please make sure that you buy a large enough rug for the living area. For the art I would choose large abstracts, if you like that kind of thing, with some warm colors in them like terracotta, yellow and greens so play off the cool tones of the furniture. Okay, since this is your home, you're free to do whatever makes you happy and feels right to you.

Thanks for your input, Ingrid! I agree with you. :) I have a lot of thinking to do and I'll have to decide if I order a rug that speaks to me first, or chairs first and decide on a rug after.

If you like the organic modern look, a vintage kilim rug might work to make it feel more playful. Your choices are neutral and a kilim rug and some textured pieces would bring everything in your room to life:

Also, I prefer the blue chairs over the new fabric - not crazy about that new fabric. I agree on more plants but I'd avoid fake plants -- a snake plant in a MCM inspired bullet planter would look great and is easy to care for.
