I'm enjoying the "Smooth" roses...

Moses inquired about the "Smooth Touch" series of roses back in April and I ended up ordering 4 from Easy to Grow Bulbs. They're all planted in the temporary raised bed that was supposed to be for tomatoes. They're gonna be there for awhile til I figure out where to put them permanently. They've been doing really well.

SMOOTH MOONLIGHT is a lovely pale lavender/lilac color. It blows fastest of the ones I got. But it's pretty.

SMOOTH LADY is the best bloomer so far and has some pretty pale pink blooms that have some warmer peachy tones.

SMOOTH DELIGHT is a nice one with kind of changing colors. Not the best one of the bunch, but can throw out these pretty blooms. It blows a little fast or sometimes doesn't open all the way, and the blooms are a little smallish. But it's still worth keeping for a bit to see what it will do.

SMOOTH BALLERINA is by far my favorite. Love the range of shades of pinks and weird markings on it. Doesn't stripe as much as I thought it would, but the veining is really cool!

Took this one this evening and I couldn't believe how gorgeous it was!

If any of you guys got some of these Smooth roses, please post your pics too!!

Lovely roses esp SB, that last photo is reminiscent of Marbree. I think I like mottling as much as striping, easier to place in the garden too. Never heard of these roses, thank you.

Moses, where did you get your Smooth Moonlight? I've only ever had the "smooth" varieties from Eurodesert when Cliff sold off his mother plants and I'd love to replace some of these! Beth, I immediately checked Easy to Grow Bulbs when you posted these terrific pictures but I didn't see roses as part of the pull-down menus at all, either as potted plants or bare roots. Was this just a one-time offering from this company or maybe just spring offering? Your last photo of Smooth Ballerina was enough to make me drop everything and hunt this rose down - just amazing.

    Cynthia,

I patronize Amazon quite a bit for just about everything that one would normally purchase from walk in stores. Being a combat shopper, both out of necessity and for the challenge of the hunt, I find the frequent: free deliveries, no sales taxes, less time shopping outside the home, and competitive prices hard to beat. Customer service at Amazon is tops, too. I have found them to be very customer centered. Ebay is a different animal, not my favorite place to shop.

I said all the above to preface my answer to your question. It was an semi-accidental discovery of Smooth Moonlight through my frequent scouring of Amazon's garden/rose listings. I go over the rose offerings quite regularly (Hirts and Stargazer Perennials are first stops), especially during the fall, winter, and spring, to see what's being sold. I cannot remember from whom I got my Smooth Moonlight, but it was a bare root, grafted rose from Amazon purchased this past April-May. Other Smooth line rose varieties (I believe there are 8 varieties of them in commerce), were listed along with SM. In two weeks the listing disappeared.

Not much help for now, but if I see the Smooth line roses on Amazon again I will be sure to give a heads up on our forum.

The roses from Amazon ship out from Easy to Grow Bulbs. I went directly to their website just to check it out, and they offered a couple more varieties than what they showed on Amazon, altho they were sold out by then. The shipping was a bit cheaper also. This was back in April. I'm guessing they will offer the roses again in the winter. They probably do not do potted ones. The bareroot roses arrived packaged inside a big sealed plastic bag with a header stapled to the bag so they could be hung on peg hooks for retail sales, and big plastic labels inside showing a picture of each rose and all the info and planting instructions etc. I was a little worried about them being so late in the season, as I don't believe there was any packing material inside the bag, but the plants were moist. They did very well once planted, and have bloomed pretty nicely since. I think they all have had 3 flushes.

Here's a pic of that last bloom of SMOOTH BALLERINA the next day:

It does really weird phototropic changes as it matures. Love it!!

Thank you for sharing these. The series looks nice and subtle. Color changes in Smooth Ballerina are a very novel pattern variation on the China Old Blush pinks, reminding me a little of Ralph Moore's whiter miniature Pink Poodle. Smooth Moonlight looks calming while it lasts. :)

Thanks for the information, Moses and Beth. It's good to know that the Amazon listings are probably from the Easy To Grow bulbs site so I only have to check one place. I'm the opposite of Moses where I only check my favorite vendors directly online - I already buy too many roses - so it's good to have this on my alert. I'll put the note on my "short list" of roses to watch for in the spring and we'll see if they have more in April.

Do let us know if you notice these roses available when you're browsing around if you get a chance!

    Thanks

Beth I just called to see when they’re going to ship and they said they had a complete crop failure on the smooth touch so,they refunded my money. So irritating.

I just checked their website and they all say sold out when you click on them.

Eek! Thanks for letting us know, Prettypetals. I wonder what happened.

Oh crap! I'm glad I didn't get around to ordering! LOL Thanks for letting us know.

No idea ac. I asked if I could keep my order placed in case they got another shipment and he said they wouldn’t be getting any period. So I may call back in a couple weeks and see what they say then.

Ah phooey - I was going to order these myself. I even made a wish list after Beth's suggestions. Thanks for letting us know Prettypetals so we don't swamp them with orders they can't fill.

My local Home Depot has some of these on the rack.... I have to admit I am very tempted to grab one of each (I love thornless). But I need a place to plant all of them, and I'm starting to run out of grass to replace.

    Beth and all,

My Smooth Moonlight was discarded by August, 2017. The only redeeming qualities it had were disease resistance and fragrance. The blooms balling and crisping, then the bush's slow repeat, even though it was grafted and I pot cultured it....which usually accelerates flushes, caused me to give up on it. Sorry to give a negative report on it, but that's how it performed for me.

I hope you continue to have good results with Smooth Moonlight, and the other Smooth Touch series roses.

Beth- how was quality from Easy to Grow Bulbs? I just placed a huge order there for some perennials and Flower Carpet Roses. Dave's Garden has mixed reviews so I was a little nervous. All the FCRoses are own root so that's a plus.

Well, the only thing I ordered was the Smooth Touch roses. They obviously were pre-packed from the supplier. They were individually bagged up bareroot plants (about 1½ -2 grade) with header cards showing a picture of the named variety and the Smooth Touch series logo, stapled to the top of the baggie, and with a hole to possibly be hung on peg hooks in a retail nursery shop. As I recall there was no moist packing with the plant inside the bag. The plants were healthy and had swollen budeyes, so they had no problem leafing out once I planted them.

Thanks Beth. Here's hoping I receive similar quality. I would love to try these roses but they're all sold out.
