what do you have for ventilation now?

the jenn air downdraft vents are problematic with gas cooktops. you really need the sort that telescopes UP to a full 15" so it doesnt suck the gas flame in.

i'd stick with a vent hood in this situation.

( i have an electric slide in range on an island, with a hood. i have a gas cooktop on an island with a telescoping down draft, so i know of what i speak.)

but honestly, a piece of granite is the inexpensive item in this equation, i'd not go too crazy just to avoid having to replace it. get a telescoping vent instead of the jenn air if you dont want a hood.

down drafts can be nice.

I have the same Jennair cooktop that I'm looking to replace. We're considering a Miele 42" KM3485G that appears to fit the Jennair cutout without any modification to the granite. The problem is, like yours, the ventilation. I only have five inches of granite at the back of the cutout, so downdraft is questionable. Looks like we'll do an island hood of some sort. What did you end up doing?

Eric, the picture and comment I posted above your question is what we ended up doing. The contractor widened the cabinetry in the island by adding matching wood and extending out the panels. He did a great job and you wouldn’t know it had been extended. This allowed enough room in the cabinet to accommodate a 45” wolf downdraft. I love the Wolf induction cooktop and griddle. Induction is better than gas, in my opinion.

The contractor we used was Joe Dorsey. He’s wonderful. We’re in Howard County, Maryland.

I forgot to mention, the granite had to be cut to enlarge the hole for the cooktop. It wasn’t a big deal to do that.
