Vertical blinds for the entire window set would be a good idea for privacy and appearance. White vinyl would work well ... or you may even be able to find wood ones to match your shelving or fabric to coordinate with your furniture.

You may still need something for that corner that fits well below the level of the colorful artwork.

You could consider some modern corner shelving that, with a small comfortable stool, might be used as a mini desk:

What is the wall with doors on the floor facing? What is the couch facing?

There are vertical blinds already on the window. It's certainly a plus design wise.

The built in corner book shelf is on two side, wall on the left, and the wall facing the window. so no more need for additional shelving, since we have a TON.

The wall opposite to the one with the art piece is connected to the entryway to the house. So about 12 inches after the piano is the end of that wall since it opens up to the entryway that leads to the main house area.

We wouldn't need a corner desk in the living room, since we would have an office downstairs. The couch you see is at least 100 inches long. It's a really long room.

You need to think about the whole room in context, which is why it's hard to give good advice without seeing the fourth wall (that the couch is facing). Usually a couch is just the start of a seating arrangement -- you need a couple of chairs nearby for a conversational gathering, say, and a coffee table to set your drink or book on. If this is facing a TV setup, that might be enough; if not, then maybe a second couch would be appropriate, facing the first, or at least semi-close the circle of seating.

Also: a 21-foot room is ripe for subdivision. It could be that you set up a seating arrangement at the "empty" end of the room and then the piano is its own thing, or you move the seating toward the piano and put a small game table and two chairs on the wall. It all depends on what else is in the room and what roles it needs to play.

So, it's 15 ft from window to fireplace? Is that the entry to the left of the fireplace in the last pic?

That first pic Rawketgrl posted shows the seating area on an angle. That might work well in your room so that the piano and fireplace can be the focal points. An upholstered chair and table can to go on the end by the window.

I like Acm's idea to bring in a game table, which can be just to display a few things if you want. The couch can be perpendicular to the fireplace, with the bookshelves behind it and couple of chairs facing the fireplace. Or, turned 90 so that the couch faces the fireplace. Chairs on one side, or both, depending on the room available. A table can be by the windows for display of some pretty things or used for games. Plants, tables w/ lamps to fill in the holes. A large rug will anchor your floating seating area.

My combo family/living room is similar in size to yours. My seating area floats in the middle facing the fireplace, which is on the long wall. The back of my couch faces the entry because the shorter direction didn't give me enough room for my couch and tables. Around the perimeter is a huge lighted cabinet, a table with lamp, and two dressers that hold music/media with the tv on top.

First, I would remove the protruding bricks from fireplace and add wood mantle. Paint wood cabinets same color as wall to blend whatever color you choose to paint. What is the view out the window? Wondering if two seating areas might work one towards the FP and another to the outdoors. Draperies to ceiling for height.

The second picture that the first responder (rawketgrl) posted looks ideal to me. A chair, tables, etc. The chair needs to take up enough visual space - not be too small in size. It would add softness to the corner & the wall - and of course your art above it. I also like draperies on each side of the window that are shown in the recommended picture.

Thank you for the suggestions. The wall shelving will certianly be colored a different color. I like the idea of matching it with the wall to blend. The view out the window is the fron side of hte home. we have a porch at front before facing the street.

Would adding a tall plant in the corner help with the space if we want to keep the couch by the window ? I was thinking of a tall indoor plant, and a arc floor lamp ?
