need low key help with our traditional bathroom

Wondering if anyone has ideas for low budget upgrades/how to decorate our bathroom. We moved in about 8 months ago and due to other priorities (not fun ones, either ...need to replace the roof and spent a decent chunk of change on the pool) we can't do much to the bathroom. It's not my style which is either vintage or modern/contemporary. The house is Victorian and is mostly updated but retains lots of great Victorian original details/charm.

Some of the issues here...1, apparently there used to be an entrance from one of the other bedrooms (not the master) so the previous owner closed it up and covered it with a large mirror because she couldn't match the tile. Not a horrible short term fix but is another weird element of this space.

2, there are both black and silver fixtures here. The light fixture over the vanity as well as the flush mount that is centered in the room are black--everything else is silver. We could afford to swap these (or try spray painting) but I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Last issue is that it's so brown!

Thoughts on paint colors and decor ideas that could improve the room?

btw, don't have a pic but essentially the toilet is behind the door.

Mix of metals doesn't seem worth worrying about -- that's pretty common these days. I might turn the light fixture to face down, but just because it seems unnaturally high.

For the corner/mirror, I think I'd try to find a nice wall cabinet that could go in that space, to act as a linen closet and give you a bit of a more intentional-looking solution. It's probably ok to block that wall switch if it's a duplicate of controls you have elsewhere, but you have to stay slim enough to avoid the window. Ikea has the right kind of thing. (Most of their explicitly bathroom cabinets are tall and narrow, but you could use one of the other bookcase/door/basket systems to the same end.)

Otherwise, you can't do much to make it less brown, other than by putting in some colorful rugs and towels with art to match. It's possible that the paint could be a bit cooler, and I suppose you could paint the vanity from red-brown to white, with some effort. But really, this is a perfectly nice bathroom that just isn't to your style. Dress it up in things that feel more like you and then don't worry about it for a while.

I would actually suggest minimizing the brown by adding more brown! I would paint the walls and the ceiling the same color as the shower tile so the tile is no longer such a bold focal feature and all the walls become one background, all the angles above the shower and window would become less awkwardly defined, the window area which now seems small would feel more expansive, and the focus would then shift to everything else inside the space. For above the sink, I would get a new framed mirror as wide as the sink and as tall as the door, and have the light fixture shine down vs. up so it is more functional and cozy. I would hang an off-white flat-panel valance with a scrolling brown print near the ceiling above the window to visually heighten it and would replace the vertical mirror with open shelving that is as tall as the top of the shower glass enclosure.

If there's an exhaust fan that will remove moisture from the room during showers, you could add an attention-getting walllpaper for $200 or so. If there's no exhaust, wallpaper will likely peel off quickly. If that's the case, try a blue or green paint (robin's egg).

New towels and a fresh blooming orchid (change it out for another one when it finishes blooming) will make it feel new.

You could make all the fixtures the same..I would do the oil rubbed bronze that is in the shower.

Next issue is the white tub surround…so, on same eye level, paint the vanity white.

I will make a guess for the same paint color for for walls and ceilings…unfortunately, monitors are not accurate.

Now you have three colors going: oil rubbed bronze, white and the tile and wall/ceiling paint which is the same.

Paint the frame of the mirror:

Am I looking at this right? You can watch yourself taking a shower LOL? As someone said above, the room doesn't really look too brown it's more of a low key neutral, and a wide variety of colors would be beautiful in it. Back in the 1950s, an elderly aunt had a bathroom with glossy *black* ceramic tile. Over the years she changed the colors and motifs of her rugs, curtains, shower curtains, etc, as her tastes changed...and everything worked.

I think we will definitely turn the vanity lights to face down. as some of you have picked up, this color scheme and style is just not ...me so I was struggling to figure out what colors to use. It sounds like most people think the thing to do is embrace the "brown/beige/tan" so I may try getting some samples of beige but also some colors.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions!

@sylvia, yes, it's certainly an... awkward spot for a mirror! at least it's not facing the toilet? ;)
