Bought a few sample area rugs. Which one do you like best? Why?

Or show me a picture of a rug that you think would work.

Left to right:

Rug is s true grey with cream 2D diamond pattern

Rug has bluish grey undertones, with cream and beige leaves

Rug is cream with specks of brown/taupe with true grey diamond pattern

Rug is a taupey/grey with hints of cream.....very plush

Walls will be painted SW Accessible Beige

Another vote for more color in rug. I like #3 but if not a single woman house, it might be too feminine. Also, while pretty, the arabesque and other similar print may be trendy. This is a good opportunity to go w/ one of a kind design.

surprised that designer appears to have such narrow albeit safe parameters.

    Designer likes this rug

Here's the rest of the room......not painted yet!

Where is the rug going and will it be that small? I am not crazy about any of these.

Rug will be 8' x 10' encompassing most of area in front of couch. The console is pulled away from the wall about 2 feet....the room is very large.

I would not use any of them. Do more color, and nothing that matchy with the sofa.

OK....thanks! So I guess I'm looking for a rug with a little orange and brown in it!

I'd say as multicolor (but subtly so) as you can stand. it gives you the flexibility to change your mood in terms of accessories. Doesn't just have to be orange and brown. Who knows, you might fall in love with turquoise further down the line.

Safe, a nice word for what your designer has chosen. They aren't awful, of course, but they add NOTHING to your home. Would an honest-to-goodness Persian be out of the question? I'd love to see something with presence in your room.

I had to laugh at "orange in small doses". My living room is mostly orange with lilac-hints on the medium gray walls...I refused the memo ;) I'm not trying to make a living at it, either.

alex9179, this entire house is beige.....I need a little more than small accents of color! Looking for another rug!! Not a fan of Persian's too much.....my home and design is somewhat contemporary....very light....not heavy.

I was looking for one I had chosen earlier in the year and found these first. These are cheap enough that you can experiment to see what you like. Replace it in a couple of years.

What color do you plan on painting the room?

    colorblind1961 thanked oaktonmom

Your floor tiles have a pinkish tone, you'll need to factor that in. Of the rugs you posted I like number three. Not sure how accessible beige will work with your floor, you need to test.

The bulk of the room is going to be painted SW Accessible Beige. I will be using colors down the deck on several walls as accents. The wall behind the TV console will be covered with a shiplap type of wood, and will be painted the next color down the deck.....a little darker.

saypoint, the tiles are oatmeal in color, no pink undertones. Show's pinkish in some of my pictures, but IRL, they have some brown, grey, taupe and white veining, along with fossil like imprints. Tested a sample of Accessible Beige and it compliments the floors nicely.

Floor tiles galore, I don't like repeating uniform geometrics usually--- too many shapes. So I like rugs that are a bit irregular in pattern [if not just shag/texture like no. 3]. So the cloud/ river fluid is nice. Or varying flowers...

Wow! Thanks everyone for all these great ideas! I'm an earthy girl and like color but in small doses. I tend to shy away from Modern and lean more towards contemporary. I love texture, mixing woods with metals and creating a cozy feel. I've got some thinking to do. And no art yet......have some from my previous house but don't think any of it will go.

You said you'll paint... but if patio restricts sun, thinking a rug with some color would be good [and covered a bit by coffee table?]. So neutral... sure you want a darker version behind tv? but will ledge above it have metal large baskets... or collection of... came upon long photo - thought of your ledge, that's all -

havingfun.....yes orange is my accent color, but looking for a more subdued textured, high pile rug.

everdebz, if I find the right rug with just a bit of color and texture I'd be interested. Even with the covered patio the room is super bright, plus 13 foot ceilings........going only a little darker on the wall behind the TV......there are also can lights highlighting that wall. As for the ledge.....I hate it. I'm thinking of dry walling it. I'm too OCD and a clean freak for knick knacks collecting dust up on a ledge LOL!

Hand-tufted rugs sound nice but they are the worst you can buy, which is why they're so cheap. Just google quality of hand-tufted rugs and you'll see what I mean. If you want a lower-priced rug you can go for polypropylene which is easy to care for an quite durable.

With the color of your sofa I'm a little surprised that you're choosing beige for a wall color, but then I have a prejudice against beige because it's been so overused. I'd probably choose cream or a light but warm gray. You didn't ask about wall color so I hope I'm not offending. You could add orange accents in paintings and accessories and don't necessarily have that color in the rug also. When you find the right rug it will probably be obvious to you. That is such a nice room.

Ingrid's good info, which I didn't know...I already like poly-type rugs. Why not a mural painted on wall way above? hmmm! in neutrals guided by tile color, permanent item. or stenciled local plants in subtle look....

It's really more about the quality of the wool & dyes and the amount you can spend. Hand tufted wool rugs are not as good a machine tufted or knotted wool rugs but not all machine tufted or knotted rugs are great wool with good dyes. I have only once owned a knotted rug.

Mostly I am in the $cheaper hand tufted category. Initially you will sometimes have a bit more shedding. They are not collectables but they can be very beautiful and one can get many years use. As long as the wool is good and soft I'm fine with hand tufted. However, with a few dogs and messy husband I only count on the living room rug looking nice for about six years and a few cleanings. The bedroom ones last a long time.

ingrid_vc.........My husband picked out "Calico Cream"....it's a warmer color. May go that route. We just moved in three weeks ago so getting the lay of the land so to speak.
